Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition gets an even more definitive Switch 2 Edition, features 4K/60 docked performance

After datamines revealed code for 60fps in the original Switch release of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, fans have patiently waited for a Switch 2 update to come along and unlock what we assumed the game was already capable of. Both announced and released today, the new Switch 2 Edition gives us this and a touch more, bumping the resolution up to 4K when docked and 1080p for handheld play.

The best things in life are however not free, and this update is no exception. Coming in at £4.19 in the UK and $4.99 in the US it won't be breaking the bank, but with the update purely bumping the resolution and framerate, it is a shame it couldn't be free. The Switch 2 Edition will also be seeing a physical release, with it slated to hit stores on the 16th of April, where you can expect to find the base Switch game and Switch 2 Edition upgrade together on one cartridge.

60 FPS is good but the upscaling looks terribad, like a van-gogh filter.
I just finished Luxin's video about it and I'm appalled it was released like this. The series already wasn't the best with its aliasing but outside of the fps boost, it seems more like Downgrade Pack. Especially on handheld.

Hahahaha. No thanks. Even though the Nintendo Switch 2 is stronger than the original, it still falls short of true next-gen performance. Without strong AAA exclusives and with many titles being ports from PS5, it’s hard to justify the investment. A PS5 or PC simply offers better hardware and a more future-proof experience.

This is Nintendo!

Next theyll be charging you for fucking surround sound.

Correct me if not mistaken, purpose of buying a switch 2 is for its crappy AI to take its 1080p resolution and upscale it to 4k.

But, it'll cost ya

And we wonder why we emulate the default Switch versions as theyre no different.

Not nintendo but reminds me of this

Still yapping on about nothing.

"Its 11 year old game" yes and? Its age changes nothing. It's still a game myself and many others didn't play or finish given its access. "No new and fresh fish" to you maybe. To others, these are new given it was on a console that didn't fair every well. Especially if it's a series they only got into recently. That's how the medium works. As technology and platforms changes, it makes sense to reintroduce it a new audience or respond to changes in the market.

Your analogy makes no sense because games do not age like food. What you gain from games (usually) does not degrade but your access to them can. And as mentioned before, there is still new "fish" being released. It's like being made at book reprints or updates in editions.

But putting that aside, why would you not mention a release like this? Why would you not advertise your game's new content? Especially in one of your bigger franchises? Given the point is to make it more accessible, why would you NOT want to let people know they can access this game?

You come off as being upset for the sake of it, without knowing what you're talking about. Because X Definitive Edition will have been out for a year next month. And this update WAS shadowdropped, released right when it was announced. That's not to mention how the initial release already had a low profile, bring announced in October 2024 only via a trailer, not a direct or major spectacle. No special edition either. So it was already low profile as you suggested... And you're still mad? A year later?

Rereleasing games like X, which is no longer being sold for its end of service platform, is not the problem. Accessibility is a good thing and, yes, should be mentioned. A problem arises when you have pricing habits like Nintendo (both regarding full price games and charging for upgrades) or whatever SEGA is doing. And remakes are their own can of worms but it's also not relevant right now.

"Its old" doesn't mean they shouldn't port it forward, and "they should be making new things" makes no sense because they have! They've been doing both! So what's the problem? Because it sounds like you just hate rereleases on principle. And it's a not a good one.

With how the Switch was dogged by performance issues, for many games 60fps is that transformative of an upgrade.

Whether the amount of effort it took warrants the price, is another matter.
Some game engines though... sincerely do not support 60fps. (Final Fantasy X for a popular example)

Great work, Monolith Soft! Now, for this to be the utmost definitive edition, we still need the console and product keys so we can eventually run this on Eden on proper hardware. ;)

Apparently the upscaling filter is atrociously bad.

Insane smugding. I'm sure digital foundry will do a video showing it off in excruciating detail.

These enhancements I feel should be toggle-able so the user gets to choose their preferred performance and image quality.

What would really be cool: Compare it to Cemu 4K uncapped FPS, preferably with some Nvidia postprocessing magic slapped on top of it. However, Youtubers are cautious about showing Nintendo IP emulated, so maybe that might be a no no.

Why can't we just have native res anymore? The whole DLSSSSLLA AI upscale algorithm shit just baffles me.

Can't you just give me a raw native honest to go 1440p? Please? If not that then 1080p (real actual 1080p) is fine. Enough with the fake 4760p but it's actually 720p ran through Shodan the defiler AI to appear 4760p with ghosting and smear. Stop it! Stop!

Oh, when I say postprocessing, I didn't mean dynamic resolution. I meant slapping some extra antialiasing or, if someone has a beefy PC, even some raytracing or whatever to mask the PS3-era graphics.

And as I remember, the Wii U version didn't mandate dynamic resolutions, but correct me if I'm wrong.
I remember that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and 3 switch resolutions like crazy just to keep the poor Switch 1 alive, but I don't remember if the emulators let you turn this off. XC 2 and 3 were way too buggy on Yuzu at the time for me to bother playing them longer than an hour or so.

Apparently the update is kinda messing up on the handheld mode. It's so bad that Nintendo will refund the update cost if you get in touch with their support. I didn't notice it because I only play it docked, but to be honest I still noticing the FPS dropping in certain areas. 100% not solid 60fps.

Native 4k rendering is expensive and we've kinda hit a wall in traditional raster performance to brute force it. Add on the awful performance of first gen ray tracing cards on top and you see the issue.

Nvidia came up with the idea of using machine learning to upscale a lower res image to the target res to claw back GPU performance, DLSS 1 while cool was an failure image quality wise. DLSS 2 on the other hand was exceptional and could make a 1440p to 4k upscale look the same if not better than native 4k. Its only gotten better with DlLSS 3 and 4.

Issue is DLSS is an Nvidia exclusive tech and requires a bit of effort on the game dev side to implement correctly.

AMD of course had to try and keep pace with FSR. FSR has the benefit of being partially open source and super easy to implement.
FSR1 is a sharpening filter and looks horrid in every game I have no idea why devs still use it.
FSR2 works more like DLSS and has to be implemented somewhat similar and while better still sucks.
FSR3 is respectable but nowhere as good as current DLSS.
FSR4 is finally competing with DLSS but locked to AMD newest GPUs.

the ps5 and xbox are AMD based and devs were stuck with FSR 1 or 2. But we also have devs trying to upscale 720p or worse to above 1080p which is well outside the range any of these upscalers were really made for which just makes the issue even worse.

The switch 2 can make use of DLSS but you'd need to do work to add it to your game engine. as well as keep in mind DLSS isnt free and takes GPU time so you have to manage that with the switch 2's small gpu.

Given the state of xenoblade x S2 and the work required to implement DLSS. I heavily doubt they are using DLSS. This looks like FSR1 or another post process filter gone horribly wrong. Nintendo should be embarassed letting it go out like this.

Yup. The thing is an upgrade with a downgrade. 60fps + ai upscaling an AA+shapended image. They didn't even bother capping to the native res, dynamic resolution is still active. Switch 2 is not powerful enough for it I guess.
