Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition gets an even more definitive Switch 2 Edition, features 4K/60 docked performance

After datamines revealed code for 60fps in the original Switch release of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, fans have patiently waited for a Switch 2 update to come along and unlock what we assumed the game was already capable of. Both announced and released today, the new Switch 2 Edition gives us this and a touch more, bumping the resolution up to 4K when docked and 1080p for handheld play.

The best things in life are however not free, and this update is no exception. Coming in at £4.19 in the UK and $4.99 in the US it won't be breaking the bank, but with the update purely bumping the resolution and framerate, it is a shame it couldn't be free. The Switch 2 Edition will also be seeing a physical release, with it slated to hit stores on the 16th of April, where you can expect to find the base Switch game and Switch 2 Edition upgrade together on one cartridge.

From this very forum.

Then I was mistaken. But I will say, how did this not get much more attention than it did at the time? Honestly, this is the first time hearing about an actual working mod to push 60fps.

You’d be very surprised what the modding community has accomplished, especially that dev. With OC you can do so much with a Mariko model. Look up FPSLocker and the switch graphics mods cheats. It’s like a whole different world when you dive in.

I have delocalization mod on Switch 1 that I quite enjoy but man it's so tempting to play on Switch 2 just for the upgrade. I hope it's possible to use the manual save transfer feature between them.

According to SwitchUp, the Sw2 Edition has improved textures. Probably why the game has a jump to 1.3GB in Update Data, as listed on the store pages. So it's not just a resolution/fps bump.
I don't doubt it, but it's weird they didn't opt to mention that in either the trailer or the eShop page. I guess they must lump improved textures in with "enhanced resolutions" since they'll help the higher resolutions look better?

I'm guessing theres going to be a game release drought for switch 2 and theyll be sprinkling these switch 2 editions throughout the year and treat them as new releases in between the actual newly released games

Mario Tennis came out next week and Pokopia comes out in two weeks. It'd be a bizarre time to be dropping one now if that's what they were aiming for lol

They have like the entire switch 1 library of games to create these 5 dollar upgrades to fluff out their release schedules, not a bizarre time to release any of these upgrades, they have a huge backlog to go through.

Jesus christ... how many definitive editions, remakes, remasters of one game do i need to see. Nintendo is hopeless, it has no games at all.
Pathetic.
You think Nintendo, Monolith Soft, etc dropped whatever they were working on to get this upgrade out? This is reminding me of people who thought that devs stopped working on games to make Amiibo.....

...One and a half? This is basically an addon (hence 0.5) to the preexisting Definitive Edition, which is the second release of a game that was stuck on Wii U. This whining isn't relevant. Not even getting into they have games, you (and I) just don't care for them. There's a difference.

That being said, we've known X had 60fps built-in for a while and I thought I'd get a switch 2 if they ever implement it. Now that it's actually happened... I'm good. 60fps is nice but I've seen word that its artifacting is atrocious, not to mention the rest of the games haven't been improved either.

Every other company on earth: "After-sales is a part of a product's release. Updates? Of course they're free, they're not DLCs so why would we charge for them?"

Pisstendo: "Wait guys, we have a new idea: You know how developers and publishers charge for new features with DLCs or expansions? Well, how about this: We charge for updates that should be a part of the game in the first place! They'll suck it up for sure :creep:"

And suck it up they did.

The Nintendo fanbois are of course defending these practices to their last breath. Imagine charging for updates that, every other company on earth, releases for free because if you want to charge for the same game, you release more stuff for it. Pisstendo? Nah, we charge just so you can play your game the way it should've been from the beginning and now paid another 500 quid for another one of our bricks.

I'm sorry but anyone defending this deserves a brick to their skull, hopefully that'll wake them up. The consoomerism is heavy with this one, and I sadly know a few who fall for this shit even when they have a PC and an Emulator on which they can run this game with 60FPS, superiour resolution and LOD, and generally a much better experience. But I guess if you're this deep into the Pisstendo ecosystem you have to justify the 500 quid you spent on that brick called "Switch 2" and shell out even more cash so you don't feel it was a complete waste to have bought into that junk. Sunk cost fallacy and all that...

$5 for a 4K60 upgrade? Not bad, in all honesty. Was expecting $10 since that's the usual upgrade price for something that looks like a "basic" upgrade.

But putting aside what it looks like on the cover, I've read that modders had trouble even trying to get the game running at 60fps on emulation without something breaking in every Xenoblade title (i.e. cinematics). So considering that Monolith Soft went the extra mile to rework real-time in-game cinematics to run at 60fps properly, I'd say that's worth the $5 price tag. However, I'm certain that Xenoblade 1-3 are going to be $10+ upgrades given that there's WAY more cinematics than XCX and likely need a lot more work to fine tune them. Especially Xenoblade 2 given how poorly it already performs on Switch 1 hardware and it's their most sold Xenoblade game ever that's still very popular in Japan.

I dunno about the other being priced higher. Technically, XCX is the oldest of all the XC games on Switch 1 in terms of game design, still having ties to the Wii U. And I guess folks could say it is also the biggest with how open it is compared to the other current entries. The rest, imo, are running under newer designs, even XC DE, so it may not be as problematic to upgrade. But in any case, the release of the XCX Sw2 upgrade for $5 is kind of making a precedent for the rest, where charging more after the fact would not sit well with consumers.

Next theyll be charging you for fucking surround sound.

Correct me if not mistaken, purpose of buying a switch 2 is for its crappy AI to take its 1080p resolution and upscale it to 4k.

But, it'll cost ya

And we wonder why we emulate the default Switch versions as theyre no different.
