Super Mario 64 gets a new PC port from the Harbour Masters team

Harbour Masters, the team behind such PC ports as Ship of Harkinian (Ocarina of Time), 2ship2harkinian (Majora's Mask), Spaghetti Kart (Mario Kart 64), and Starship (Star Fox 64), have today released a new project: Ghostship. A PC port of Super Mario 64, Ghostship currently promises to offer a simple install experience akin to their previous projects, as well as high refresh rate gameplay, a modern configuaration UI, a debug menu, level select, and texture pack support.

With the project still in its early stages, there's still more yet to come. The team also plan to add both custom model support and a randomiser to the title.

Those interested can download it from the project's GitHub page, with updates shared both there and via the team's Discord server. As with their previous releases, you will need a ROM file to acquire the game's assets from. Placing this in the same folder as the app, this process is automatic and about as seamless as it can be.

I really enjoy how easy it is to set up. I had trouble setting up other SM64 PC ports and when I did get them set up I thought the user interface was lacking. But I love how this one is as easy as just putting my rom in a folder and clicking an application. I love Ship of Harkinian and 2Ship, and I was so glad to see this team release a Super Mario 64 equivalent. Good time to be a gamer, for sure! (Now that it's decompiled, I'm patiently waiting for a Twilight Princess PC port, with the same level of quality as Ship of Harkinian and 2Ship :P)
I completely agree with this opinion and feel the same way.
The Ship ports so far are so simple, they're easily the most straightforward and user friendly way to play these games.
It also means any features added can be enjoyed by the most people.

not that i dont like 5 or 6 different mario 64 ports, but some variety might be fun, too.
I've played many Mario 64 ports, and honestly... My favorite one to play on Android isn't the native port... It's the 3DS port. It plays flawlessly, gives me good widescreen support, and plays as I expect it to. Nothing more, nothing less. It's literally flawless to me.

i can recommend sm64coopdx, that ones really fun

Ahh, first the Dreamcast port and now a brand new PC version. I know there are other decompiled N64 games that could use some attention, but I'm not at all unhappy to see SM64 get the Harbor Masters treatment.

My question if this will become compatible with popular mods, like Render96 and sm64coopdx. I know that comes down to the intentions of both the port team and the mod team, but I understand that the current installation method for these mods is circuitous and error-prone. It'd be nice to have a more modular system in place to streamline the whole thing.

nice!!! this is so cool! kudos to the team working on this!!!

Could someone create Mario Maker 64 where you could create your own stages in Mario 64?

I think this already exists, but as a romhack. It's called Super Mario Builder 64 iirc

--------------------

Also, i'm surprised to see the discussion here around this port. Yes, a version already existed, but the compiler is trash, i haven't been able to compile a new one in almost a year and i've tried everything. I miss playing SM64 RT

I agree in that there's way more N64 games that deserve the attention, but this is what you get after 20 years of reducing the console's library to five or six games at most. Since that's what we have, there's no sin in having more versions with potentially different features, the SM64 decompilation is very mature, so i have high hopes for this recomp.

Now back to waiting for someone to take the Castlevania 64 decompilation and make a recompilator for it. I can't believe fucking Quest 64 got a recomp before this.

Cool, what are the capabilities of this port in comparison to the ones that have been out for awhile?

Depends, as those who already installed the other port on their PC likely won't care.
Fair enough and good for them :)
But id rather have options any day of the week. I think most people would.

That in and of itself is fine, but woking on a rather obsolete project instead of finishing their current ones leaves a bit of a bad taste. 2ship2harkinian for example lacks support for European versions of the game unlike Ship of Harkinian. I wish they would concentrate on stuff like that instead. That being said, it's their time and effort and I am not entitled to anything, but still it doesn't make a lot of sense if the benefit is marginal.

That is very valid to note. But and I cant speak for them but sometimes you need to have another project to clear your plate before looking back on things. Call it developer fatigue or whatever you want .. from personal perspective I know it happens a damn lot and it's most of the time good for future updates. So let's hope this will inspire them for more on what exists.

I tried to try it out, but after the startup, it just goes "Not Responding" mode and freezes

It might have to do with my 2017 computer, but its a problem I have

not bad but we already have a very big bunch of sm64 ports, at least sm64 coop dx is have all of this and even more

Good luck getting it to compile today.

It drives me crazy. Compilation always fails midway
Follow the guide https://gbatemp.net/threads/building-sm64-for-nintendo-switch-from-sm64ex-alo-repository.652092/ but your are right. It is a lot more easy this way

Be sure the program path and the path of your ROM have no special characters on it.

The way on which the original assets Get extracted and you do not need to build the code

You're not going to believe me, but it randomly decided to compile a couple of hours after i wrote that reply.

Still, thanks for the guide ;) Though the one i wanted to compile is Render96ex+tester_rt64alpha with the Render96 character models and levels, it's useful either way, so you have my thanks :)

That's cool. I think I couldn't get that port working on either of my 3Ds' for some reason.
I would kind of want the DS content backported one day. But that's quite an undertaking.
None of the mods for Zelda OOT or MM backport their 3DS content either and they are a lot more similar.
I guess you could just only use the DS versions as a base but they have never had the history and support behind them, probably because two screens is always going to be somewhat awkward, even if one of them is superfluous.

I want Mario 64 to be like Rayman 2, Resident Evil 4, Doom or Skyrim: To be on every machine.
