Super Mario 64 gets a new PC port from the Harbour Masters team

Harbour Masters, the team behind such PC ports as Ship of Harkinian (Ocarina of Time), 2ship2harkinian (Majora's Mask), Spaghetti Kart (Mario Kart 64), and Starship (Star Fox 64), have today released a new project: Ghostship. A PC port of Super Mario 64, Ghostship currently promises to offer a simple install experience akin to their previous projects, as well as high refresh rate gameplay, a modern configuaration UI, a debug menu, level select, and texture pack support.

With the project still in its early stages, there's still more yet to come. The team also plan to add both custom model support and a randomiser to the title.

Those interested can download it from the project's GitHub page, with updates shared both there and via the team's Discord server. As with their previous releases, you will need a ROM file to acquire the game's assets from. Placing this in the same folder as the app, this process is automatic and about as seamless as it can be.

I'm still hoping some guy with a lot of free time will port it to Zeebo.

I want to see Mario 64 become the new Doom and run on everything possible.

This port isn’t very good to be honest. It has a lot of graphical glitches and I saw one big glitch right at the beginning. When you open the game don’t press anything. After about two minutes you’ll see a funny glitch 😛

I don't rlly see the point of this when there's already like a half dozen forks of SM64 with more features and better modding support. sm64coopDX is basically the end-all-be-all of the PC port with tons of romhacks and custom characters that you can install super easily

Heck yeah!

id rather see a little more diversity when it comes to these ports.
and Banjo/DK64 with mod support and some QOL features would be so lovely man.

Oh... and Paper Mario, too kthx <3 <3

Eh. Always duplicating efforts over the same 50 games over and over... there are dozens of thousands retro games out there. They just have as much "legacy".

I really enjoy how easy it is to set up. I had trouble setting up other SM64 PC ports and when I did get them set up I thought the user interface was lacking. But I love how this one is as easy as just putting my rom in a folder and clicking an application. I love Ship of Harkinian and 2Ship, and I was so glad to see this team release a Super Mario 64 equivalent. Good time to be a gamer, for sure! (Now that it's decompiled, I'm patiently waiting for a Twilight Princess PC port, with the same level of quality as Ship of Harkinian and 2Ship :P)

People here are so salty for no reason at all really. Why do so many homebrew communities attract that kind of person. Is it because it’s free and they feel entitled?

This port is by far the most accessible and you can toggle various settings (like free cam, various graphics settings, and interpolated higher frame rates) on the go without needing to recompile the whole game. I see this as a net positive overall

Yeah, having to recompile everything to change just one or two options is a pain, I very much prefer the way Harbour Masters handle these ports, so I'm looking forward to this one. And having more options is always nice, like that new port of Star Fox 64 that's basically identical to Starship, except for a couple differences like changing the text and spoken languages independently of each other, or having the magma in he lava stage move at the same framerate as the rest of the game instead of being locked to 30.

Thanks to hbg, the switch homebrew (and pirate) community harbours some of the most toxic people and they are usually the loudest. Isn't that right @SDA

That in and of itself is fine, but woking on a rather obsolete project instead of finishing their current ones leaves a bit of a bad taste. 2ship2harkinian for example lacks support for European versions of the game unlike Ship of Harkinian.
And it still has no support to swap 3D assets, which would allow us to have a 3DS mod like for Ship of Harkinian. I'm grateful for their work but it's a shame it's taking so long to get this feature.
