I wasn't gonna do another thread. Or a poll, for that matter. Because let's face it: this is just another diversion from the Epstein files. Or the growing international discontempt for the kidnapping of Maduro. Or his declining popularity. Or...pretty much anything Trump utters on a daily basis now. It's a nothingburger, and I dare anyone to claim otherwise.

But there's a difference: NATO's existence itself is at stake over this nothingburger.
I'm no expert, but NATO is essentially an alliance that means that an attack on one member is treated as an attack on all members. It's strength in numbers. Friends backing friends. That idea.

It's not exactly a secret that Trump is at best sceptical on NATO, claiming that the US does all the heavy lifting and the other countries just mooch off of it. And unlike most of his trolling, there's something of truth within that. On his first term, it was a wake-up call for the EU that the US might not always be that reliable partner against any NATO threats (meaning: Russia).
Of course that doesn't mean he's factually right. The EU has since increased the military spending budget, but the fact that EU pumped more money in THEIR OWN weapons rather than buying USA ones had diplomats going "no! don't increase membership participation like THAT!!!".
But I digress. The point is: US NATO membership has been shaky under Trump's regime at best. Maduro's kidnapping didn't help(1). And now Greenland...

Donald wanting Greenland was one of the more absurd things of his first first term. I think I even had some rant/blog about it back then. And until it escalated, it was one of the more harmless scandals in this second term. Remember what he did in his first term?
DT: I want Greenland!
Greenland: nope!
DT: then I won't visit your stupid summit.

That's why I wasn't taking his current rhetoric serious right now. Betweenn at least his dementia, Epstein, ICE scandals and actions regarding Maduro he just throws out any distraction he can ("denounce antifa!". "Let's reverse the food pyramid". "perhaps Greenland will change the front news page?" And so on). But the thing is: Greenland is a part of Denmark, and Denmark is...you guessed it: a part of NATO.
Remember that "an attack on one NATO ally is an attack on all of them?". If any non-NATO member did Trump's invasion rhetoric, he would just be "yet another dictator". But under NATO chapter, any action from the US against Greenland would require immediate action from all NATO members...including the US itself.

Think of it this way: if Ursula Von Der Leyen made claims like "we must have Florida, whether they like it or not", we wouldn't be talking semantics like "but acksually Florida is an independent state that is a member state of the United States" either. Everyone would be all like "whoah! Don't threaten the USA, lady!". Yes, including me. This is the same: Greenland's part of Denmark, end of story.

"but we care about Greenland"
No you don't. Denmark yearly pays about half Greenland's BNP. You're not.

"Minerals and oil!"
Nope again. Yes, it's there. No, Greenland isn't green. It's snow and ice. The costs to dig up anything is far worse than in Venezuela, which is exactly the reason why it's still there.

"Russia and China will beat us!"
No you don't. You already have military bases there. You already have exploitation rights. Seeing perks of being NATO member yet?

"we can't have Russia as neighbors"
Take a good look at a world map. And ask yourself why you had a meeting with Putin in Alaska.

Of course, none of that matters because Trump surrounds himself with yes-men and yes-journalists. Unlike his first term, nobody tells him these things. And what does the EU do?
*sigh*
We (the EU) send in troops to "defend Greenland". Perhaps a hundred troops in total. To do nothing but to show your dictator that we're not going to give up on an ACTUAL ally.

So what does Trump do? Suggest tariffs on countries when they refuse to sell Greenland. I could mock him saying that the EU is already tariffed, but this is serious. An open attack, annexation or (why the hell not?) another kidnapping of the prime minister that dared say they'd rather be part of Denmark would all trigger NATO charter. The decision on tariff could spark that as well, though probably on the same level (meaning: taxes on US goods).

As said: Trump was already planning to exit NATO, so this is just a plot for it. Over a country most wouldn't be able to spot on a world map(2). And apparently because some friend of his suggested it'd be a cool idea to have it in his first term.

To round this off: I'm curious to your stance. As far as I can tell, hardly anyone agrees with this course of action, and I can't see anyone even bringing up an argument that makes even a slight bit of sense. But this nothingburger somehow becomes a wedge that splits the US from NATO...and potentially putting them against each other. Shouldn't that be a reason to stop him?

...

Correction: shouldn't that be YET ANOTHER reason to stop him? (no, I haven't forgotten he's a convict, pedophile, 2 times terrorist and more)

EDIT: changed some 'we''s to "the EU". As a Belgian, that's the group I live in. Sorry for confusion.

(1): I should mention that the EU's stance is that we don't recognize Maduro's election victory. That doesn't stop us from denouncing kidnapping people
(2): sorry for the offense, but it speaks to the general US citizen intelligence that he's not brutally mocked for his claim that Greenland is somehow geographically important regarding Russia.

Trump's a moron.

Ofc it has to do with strategic territory, but Trumpet still think the world belong to him/the US.

He keeps licking the dinosaurs' eggs until they'll get irritated enough.

What still surprises me is that the UN Nations still represent nothing but an ornament in the world -as they always have been-. They keep using their useless votes to do absolutely nothing.

Someone should stop this and send Trumpet to jail for his crimes, to really stand a point.

As far as NATO goes, realistically, there are 2 paths:
  • the US gets booted from NATO and it continues on. This might be preferable, since a lot of the old agreements stay in place, but might also leave the US room to meddle from a bureaucratic standpoint;
  • NATO cases to exist and the remaining countries create a new organization. This one might be better from the standpoint of shedding US influence completely, but it would also take time to restore all agreements, which could give aggressors time to act;
In either case, there would be a period of confusion, which isn't great, given the worlds current state of affairs.

I just love the China or Russia will take it argument, wonder which genius mind that one came from. To take Greenland, you'd need to establish a route to get troops and supplies there. The best case scenario(and only really possible) would be the arctic waters(assuming that we get to the point where it's reliably traversable), and on that route you have to pass either Europe or Canada, and I can't imagine either would allow enough troops to pass.

Article 5 was written with the assumption that the U.S., a democratic nation who helped defeat Hitler, would never become Nazi Germany. This scenario was inconceivable before this term. I wish I could believe that the combined forces of Europe could stand up to the U.S., but that's nothing but a pipe dream. My contempt for Stephen Miller is brobdingnagian, but he is technically correct that Denmark cannot stand up to the might of the U.S. military and will die trying. And unfortunately, yes, Trump is also not wrong in that NATO is overall too reliant on the U.S. in its decision-making. Broken clock, etc etc.

It might take someone outside of NATO, like China, to help turn the tide in this scenario, like the U.S. helping during WW2 despite not being part of the League of Nations. But with how corrupt China is, I really, really don't relish China going to war with us, much less them winning.

Global warming could make that a non-issue come summertime, at the rate things are going. That's playing the long game.

I wouldn't accept that argument even if it wasn't icy. He thinks we need to invade other countries to steal their fossil fuels and we're "screwed" if we don't because he mismanaged the economy that badly. None of this would have happened if he had done what leftists had been screaming about for decades and moved to nuclear power and cut military spending, but no, he has to keep Big Oil happy since they effectively control the country. Big Oil is more Trump's wife than Melania is.

Trump has bankrupted himself several times with many failed businesses, but I'll be impressed (also dead) if he does that to an entire nation.

This is why Trump wants Greenland:
"Trump does not truly care about making America great again, only that he wants to make his buddies, sponsors, and family even richer. It's ironic that there were other companies that had much better deals on the table for Ukraine's mineral rights, yet the contract was awarded to Trump's political sponsor and longtime friend, Ronald Lauder. Now together they want to exploit Greenland. This is a true definition of "Conflict Of Interest", as the majority of Americans have no interest in Greenland being part of the USA."

There are all the boring political and stupid reasons, climate change will make Greenland an excellent refuge for the billionaires.

But also I like to think Trump just doesn't know that Greenland is way smaller than most maps make it appear. If we can get him near a globe that might solve this whole thing.

Yanks, look forward to spending more because of this sociopath and his batshit billionaire buddies.

https://www.politico.com/news/2026/01/15/trump-greenland-poll-00731009 - only 1/4 Americans even support this.

Which is something we can add to a growing pattern. Support for the following in addition to this Greenland nonsense seems to be anywhere from 25-33% :

- Tariffs
- ICE (Especially regarding the shooting of Renee Good)
- Not releasing the Epstein files
- Our actions against Venezuela

Which in contrast, Trump only won the vote of the people by like 1.4%, so this just seems kinda weird. Did Gaza really cost Kamala the election here? Were people that upset that she replaced Biden? Or were there actually some election shenanigans that just moved the needle far enough in Trump's direction?

Because none of what's going on is surprising to anyone who has basic political awareness in the US.

Leaving NATO will kill the United States.

alot of the United States's power comes from that. Why would any nation want to partner with a unreliable trade partner.

United States was just convient to other nations. Not necessarily better. With that convince gone, United States is pretty cooked.

It is not sustainable for the US to keep our military on Greenland soil if the Congress refuse to fund, so it will force Trump to abandon the Greenland. Also, the Congress can withhold the NDAA to cripple our military until Trump caves in.

Trump could easily order the US military to take Greenland but secure without funds are impossible if the Congress don't support to fund it or hold NDAA up, so at the end, Trump is likely to abandon as he has to refocus on the US affairs.

The US take Greenland = China take Taiwan, but I don't think that China would invade Taiwan outright if they know that US cannot attain with Greenland. It is more of sham by Trump to show that Greenland is the US soil without prove anything.

Tariff over Greenland? That's most idiotic move by Trump.

Yeah, that is very bad deal for the US.

Europe can start to build the massive military infrastructure, but they have to maintain the buffer between Western Europe and Russia, so it means Eastern Europe wouldn't be touched. Russia only have advantage is number of warheads but many people told me that most of Russia's warheads are inoperable because they don't have money to maintain. Russian invasion of Ukraine could freeze at Eastern Ukraine and cease the military battle if economy become an issue.

Europe's biggest new partner would be China and India for trading.

It make China bigger and bigger, so the US isn't going to like it.

Canada made a trade agreement with China apparently. Why? "China is more predictable"
Predictable=Stability
Uncertainity is the opposite of stability, which the United States is doing really great at.

The States long term, is definitely going to be damaged no matter what.

Yep, both Europe and Canada are allowing China to sell their EV cars with almost no tariffs on them. If you've seen the reviews of these Chinese EV cars (The Xiaomi SU7 for example), they're going to destroy the market which Tesla has had free reign over.

For the model 3, they're anywhere from $56-80k Canadian. The Xiaomi are around $44k and have all the luxury trim included.

The distance they can go on a single charge also makes the Tesla look horrible Best case for the tesla is around 550-600km on a single charge. The Xiaomi are around 800km.

Then there's the whole part of Elon trying to make self driving locked behind a paywall, he can go straight to hell with that garbage. China is going to eat Teslas lunch.

The dumbest part about this whole thing is that the US was already basically free to use Greenland as a staging ground for any military operation/presence, so long as we asked Denmark nicely. Trump is too stupid to understand soft power, and his real goal is just having something "big" he can put his name on anyway. Venezuela was, as has already been discussed, solely for control of the oil.

I've read about that some years ago. The short summary is: yes, due to global warming there'll be extra potential sea trade routes. But there'll always be ice. That is: if global warming should get to the point that all the ice in the region is gone (talking about the Northern ice sea, but it's safe to say it includes Greenland landscape), earth simply can't sustain human life anymore. That's not a doomsday prediction but science. "Luckily" for us, that's a scenario that's beyond the most negative predictions on climate change and in the realm of science fiction. It, however, means that a proper way to dig up those minerals are also in the realm of science fiction.

I won't go into the irony that the guy who publicly denies climate change potentially goes after a consequence of climate change.

Perhaps an update to this: he's now truth socializing that this 10% tariff is on february first, and will increase to 25% in June to the countries that "sent troops" (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, UK, Netherlands and Finland).

Our own local news channel has a bit of trouble keeping a straight face. Not only are those local tariffs easily avoided, but Trump also forgot Belgium. Okay, we sent in 1 troop, but it's not like those other countries sent a larger amount. It's also not clear whether those tariffs come on top of his earlier ones or not (I guess he totally forgot about taxing us earlier).
And of course there's the way this is written. "We have subsidized Denmark by not charging them tariffs" ? :rofl2: You know your writing sucks when chatGPT can write better excuses.

Elon Musk cheated on the election results. But no, I don't have proper proof to back that up. Can't be bothered to care when the democrats don't, either. But the bigger issue is that way too many people not only forgave him for the (then) longest gvoernment shutdown, blackmail of Zelensky, his covid mishandling and of course the insurrection, but ACTUALLY SUPPORTED HIM! It might have been a minority then and it might be a minority now (his popularity in other aspects aren't exactly better), but it's still not the critical mass that's needed to remove him from his position.

He certainly doesn't understand soft power. Or alliances, for that matter. I already penned down my initial thoughts at the start (a nothingburger meant to distract from earlier scandals), but as an actual end goal... @Sir Tortoise 's remark of a refuge for billionaires isn't even as unlikely as it should be.

General edit: Yup...strong reaction to the US Tariff thing happening. Macron and Starmer declare it unacceptable (hard to argue: you send in a handfull of soldiers to an allied country your ally says is under siege, and you're greeted with punishment?). Guy Verhofstadt(1) urges for a strong pushback. Most likely, Trump's got his Epstein diversion escalated to a trade war with the EU.

Edit 2: yup... It's on now.
I could link to a Dutch pay all, but let's translate and summarize...
After that liberation day Nonsense, most countries and the eu tried to appease Trump. In the(then) end, Von Der Leyen accepted a 15% tariff on the euro zone in exchange for not doing retaliatory measures. In other words: we just accepted extra tariffs. I disliked it, knowing that it would only be a matter of time before it would resurface.
So here we are. Ironically less than a month before the eu parliament would vote on the potential agreements. Meaning: terrible timing, Donald. Parliament wil reject, and the us will be hit with tariffs with estimated worth of 95 billions euro ( 95 000 million... Not sure if I translate the number correct).
No, not a general tax. Aimed at agricultural goods and what's generally soms in republican lead states. Iirc similar to what Canada is already doing.

(1): probably not as known, but this is a former Belgian prime minister and about decades long EU parliament member. Among the three of them, that's a huge influence on Von der Leyen's decision process.

Okay... Finally something non paywall and reliable: https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/2026/0...tegen-amerikaanse-dreiging-van-invoertarieve/
(Flemish national news... Dutch, obviously, but translateable)

As I mentioned earlier: anything agreed between von Der Leyen and Trump last summer is off the table. The whole reason for the agreement was on the condition of nothing new, so... Yeah.
Of course trump can and probably will dig up his April fools plate with that huge percentage against the eu. So... What to do?
Well... A series of economical measures aimed to scare off countries into messing with the eu. It's tariffs, denying companies access. And in this case: boycott the fifa world cup. All coming from the eu, of course. None of this 'only against the countries that sent troops to Greenland'.

I've looked into USA reactions. Schumer voices concerns against democrats, some Republicans will vote against Trump's that tariffs. I'd pay more attention to those if it mattered, but to Trump it's just nuisance. He's a dictator, so anything other than getting him to back off won't do.

Greenland's reactions are positive in our favor. Prime Minister 'verbluft' (positively surprised) with the eu support. Demonstrations flying the Greenland flag (i presume... I'm no expert). I know the local population should be front and center, but they weren't looking for attention. They watch the news as well, so they know how corrupt the us is at the moment. It's it any wonder they'd rather be with Norway?
