It took me years to beat this game because I lost it while traveling by plane.

Good but short game. One of the best gameboy games around, it even has variations in dialogue depending if you collect enough Gems or not.

Sadly, i've tried it on my Mister, and rom doesn't boot ...
Does the Mister has SRAM support? The game uses SRAM to store most of the code, so that might be the reason? Emulators can emulate it, and the Everdrive cartridge supports it, but I don't know about Mister.

Congrats on the release, especially since we've been following you here all this time it's so great to see you managed to pull this one off!

Oh really? Anyone tried the Analogue Pocket yet?
I'll give it a shot on the MiSTer, maybe later today.

I'll probably update the patch description to warn people about SRAM, if you can confirm the mister doesn't work, and it turns out to be the cause.

Good morning everyone, I hope you're all having a nice WE, the last one before Christmas!

We've passed the first 500 downloads line, and I just wanted to ask you, if you appreciated my work, if you would be so kind as to leave a review on RomhackPlaza? That would be very nice!

Thank you in advance, I'm seeing the first playthroughs of the game on Youtube, and it fills me with joy!

Cheers!

I must say I am VERY impressed! The only issue I can find is that Roderick's ear is cut off when he is holding an anvil (or a football).

Not sure if this has been mentioned before.

Please DO NOT share images via that outdated system IMGUR, it screws up the pixel art with that ugly blurring.

First of all: A big THANK YOU for your Christmas present! 🫶🏻

I am currently trying it on my Gameboy Color and unfortunately I am stuck in the haunted forest where the game freezes as soon as Fifi tells me to free her. I have attached an image for you to show.

Can anyone confirm this?

Merry Christmas to all of you! 🎄
Hello! Sorry to read about that. I'm very much surprised, since I completed the game on original hardware, but let's see if we can identify the situation a bit more. What kind of everdrive cartridge are you using? Does it happen the first time you meet her, or after you went, if you come back to her? Does it happen with all the three characters? Please let me know, I hope we can figure it out!

Just tested the game, and I don't seem to have any issue with Fifi's sequence? Looking forward to reading from you.

Hi,

sorry for getting back to you only now, but the Christmas period didn’t leave me much time to do extensive testing.

By now, however, I’ve tried quite a few things and can say that the issue always occurs the first time I encounter Fifi, regardless of whether I’m playing as Buster, Plucky, or Hampton. I also tested this on a GBA SP, where the same issue occurs.

I’ve attached two short videos demonstrating the problem:

I’m using a flash cartridge writer that allows me to write my own cartridges so the experience is as close to the original hardware as possible. I’ve never had any issues with it before:

https://shop.insidegadgets.com/product/gbxcart-rw/

For testing purposes, I also copied the ROM to a Supercard SD and tried it on the GBA SP as well. This time, the error did not occur but I experienced slowdowns and graphical glitches.

Well... The thing is I've tested the game on real hardware with an everdrive cartridge, so I think we can rule out that the patch would be incompatible with retail game boy (unless we found out GBA isn't 100% compatible with GBC, but I think it's a bit of a stretch).

I'm not sure yet, but it might be the cartridge you're using that could have issues with the entire bank being copied in the SRAM (I see it's supposed to be compatible, but maybe it's limited?) Could you try to run your patched rom on PC emulator maybe? (I've used both BGB and Emulicious, which are supposed to be accurate)

If you encounter issues on PC as well, it might be the rom that wasn't correctly patched, or maybe your rom wasn't good to begin with? FYI, the CRC of the patched game should be D4F66CE8.

Looking forward. :)

UPDATE : I see you have a user's interface when copying the rom into the cartridge :

https://www.gbxcart.com/

Would you mind taking a screenshot of it? I'd like to see if everything is correctly detected?

Hi,

to rule out any issue with the flashcart itself, I reflashed the original ROM (the one I applied the patch to) onto it and was able to complete the game on the GBA without any problems. After that, I patched this file again and wrote it back to the flashcart, but the issue still persists. Attached is the requested screenshot from the tool:

I haven’t tested the ROM on an emulator yet, since the CRC is correct. Do you think it would still make sense to do so?

Good day,

After some PM with @TeleTubby666 and a few tries, we were able to solve the problem he had getting pass through the dialog with Fifi.

Turns out the original game does some unuseful things with writing on the ROM (which is theorically impossible), something that doesn't have any effect on the GB version, but will switch the RAM bank on my patch, since I incorporated SRAM.

Granted, although most device and emulator seem to simply ignore the thing, they do "hang" for half a second, and apparently some cartridges will stop working.

So I released an update today, which incorporates the following changes. I strongly advice you to download it, since other cartridges than the GBxCart RW might have the same behaviour.

Yours truly :

V2 UPDATE:

  • Solved a compatibility issue with certain cartridges (mainly GBxCart RW, but others could be concerned),
  • Fixed occasional broken transitions in the Haunted Forest (scrambled graphics when screen went to white).

I don't know if this has anything to do with this but I learned from someone in the InsideGadgets Discord (website where you get GBxCart RW and other fancy stuff) that AliExpress sells some cartridges that are hacked in a way that it indeed saves (and thus writes) inside the ROM rather than with a battery. Especially PKMN Crystal cartridges from AliExpress have this issue.
I learned that the hard way while looking for "donor" carts for a homebrew game I wanted to flash on it. Due to the clear blue shell I went for a few Crystal carts from Ali only to learn that I cannot flash a "normal" game on them and by normal I mean a game that saves "normally" (for example the "real" PKMN Crystal). So my homebrew game wasn't able to create a savegame on that cartridge. Instead I had to use the "Perfect Dark" carts on Ali since they (as that person from the Discord told me) are one of the few Ali carts that actually come with a battery and are MBC5 and voila: My game was able to save on them. So I just swapped the PCB with my Ali Crystal to have the clear blue shell and this is how I learned another lesson in the process.
The issue with those hacked "I have into my own ROM" carts from Ali is, that when you accidentally turn off the game while it saves, not only the save game is lost but also the rom itself is corrupted and the cart becomes useless.
(Reflashing with GBxCart RW should still work though)

I just ordered some of these Perfect Dark donor cartridges a week ago in order to check if the problem still occurs on them.

Although there is a fix now I am still curious if another cartridge could also have done the trick with v01 of the patch
