Emulation frontend ES-DE gets 3.4.0 update featuring playtime tracking, dual-screen support, and more

Version 3.4.0 has finally launched for popular emulation frontend ES-DE after a week of teasers from the development team. Available on Windows, Linux, macOS, and Android, ES-DE has grown to be the frontend of choice for many thanks to its simple setup, robust assortment of themes, built-in scraping, and much much more. It’s been my go-to choice since starting to play with Android handhelds, and with this latest update it’s only gotten better.

The big feature this time around, at least to me, is the addition of playtime tracking. For PC users this may not sound too significant, with the majority of frontends like Playnite, Launchbox, and even Steam if you’re going out of your way. On Android the pickings are relatively slim, with the aforementioned Launchbox being the only option I’ve managed to find. Under the hood this new tracking works just like Steam, which brings with it a few quirks on more portable devices. The gist is that it’ll note the time you launched a game, and the time you closed the game. The difference between those times is added to a game’s metadata; where you might have issues is if you put your device into sleep mode after launching a game. There are optional safeguards in place, but the general advice for people wanting accurate stats is to just close games before putting their handhelds to sleep.

Next up on the feature list is something particularly exciting for me, having ordered AYANEO’s Pocket DS during its crowdfunding period: dual-screen support. Sadly this isn’t anything extreme like recreating the nostalgia of the R4 or Supercard menus to span across both screens. Instead we’re looking at a more simple option to launch your games on the display ES-DE isn’t running from. This means if you happen to be running the launcher on your bottom screen, you could launch your game on the top screen and have access to any game guides or manuals you’ve got saved. It would be cool to see this developed further with something like a screensaver that showed session playtime, total playtime, and other stats, but any development that improves the dual-screen experience is great to see.

Our final collection of features really just boil down to supporting more systems out of the box, as well as being able to list native Android ports of retro games with their original systems. Setting up the launcher on Android, you’ll now have access to aPS3e, ARMSX2, and even PC game launching via GameNative and GameHub Lite.

Alongside the 3.4.0 release, @weestuarty of the ES-DE team has put together a custom GBAtemp theme for the app for us to make available to active patrons. There's still a little work for us to do behind the scenes before making it available, but keep an eye out on the front page if you're eager to spice up your handheld with a bit of Tempy!

I have a feeling this just means more Chinese DS related devices will launch using emulation station as a front end.
Nothing I'm aware of has launched with it. It's paid software on Android (one-time payment of like £5 from memory), though I'm not sure how much that will stop companies like Anbernic that just ship their consoles with ROMs anyway.

I actually enjoyed using ES more than than batocera as a front end tbh. I wonder if other companies could just contract with them say added extra $10 per product contract per device for future indiegogo campaign products. Probably wouldn't have a problem with it.

I used many Frontends and own several gold memberships, but ES ist really amazing and mostly the only one that I use nowadays. Whats great, it's super easy to copy your game collection, game list and favorite selection to every OS with just 2 clicks basically.
Launchbox is way more feature rich and has nicer animated Colorful themes, but ES-DE is super fast and sleek and booting time is nice.

Retrobat use es-de as its backbone
For what it's worth, it uses EmulationStation as its backbone. ES-DE is a fork that's added a good chunk of features (including the ones in this update).

I have no issue with that, I have all the DS games and been trying to find a 3DS where I live, and they are no where to be found.
I wanted to Jailbreak one and add all my games, but they have SD Card limitations.
I have a 1TB and a 2TB for any dual screen device, I can run the emulator on while adding their entire 1.75TB Library on one unit and hopefully be able to capture on my capture card while running smoothly.

they shouldnt charge for the android version. besides that not a bad front end but charging for it brings them massive shame imo.
I'm not against them charging $5 for a huge android port since they update regularly and it's a one time buy. With most Chinese devices getting cheap and having android as os it's easier to log in to the play store and download from the source instead of hunting through potential malicious uploaded apk sites.

"But Android devices has spywayre I'm afraid to log in" like the android phones you daily drive and trust all your bank info with anyway.

Hmm would the new dual screen support support showing the marquee artwork on a marquee for a multicade/mame machine?

Wonderful! I might consider getting an AYN Thor someday because I love this frontend!

(Still waiting for music playback support)

Sad you feel this way but the charge for the android version literally is to cover running and distibution costs and cost for dev devices. Without access to dual screen devices there is no way to know how each manufacturer deals with things. Each manufacturer tweaks thier own version of android which in turn changes how each one impliments things. The pocket DS for example has an issue with selecting screens due to the way the screen assignment works. This is all then fed back to manufacturers so they can make updates to fix issues they have overlooked.

Plus as much as this is a hobby for Leon, he invests hundreds of hours of his own time maintaining this and developing the new features. Again the android is the only part of the project that is charged for due to the costs involved to develop and distibute.

Surely the shame is on people who are so entitled they think these guys should do all the work and pay all the costs?
