"Mole Mania" for the original Game Boy gets a full DX colourization romhack by Marc Robledo

Renowned and veteran romhacker, Marc Robledo, also known as Marc Max, and his team recently released another colourization hack from the original Game Boy catalogue, this time, being Mole Mania the one to get the DX treatment courtesy of Marc.

Marc Robledo, who has previously worked on other high quality colourization projects, giving new life into original monochrome Game Boy titles, like Mega Man World 3 DX and Megaman World 4 DX,, Dr. Mario DX, and more, released a brand new colourization romhack today, and while it's not a particularly mainstream GB game, it's certainly gained a followed becoming a cult classic, a really fun puzzle game to go through, with the title in question being "Mole Mania" for the original Game Boy.

Mole Mania is a cult classic puzzle game for the original Game Boy.
Guide Muddy Mole through more than 200 screens full of puzzles to rescue his family from Jinbe the farmer.

Our remastered version, allows you to enjoy the game in full color for the first time ever in 30 years!

This new colourization brings together the incredible programming work by Marc Robledo himself, as well as sprite and graphics artistry work by kensuyjin33 who has worked with Marc in almost every colourization project. Their combined efforts shine on once again to bring forth this project to life, with carefully picked colours and attention to detail to make this the best version of Mole Mania to date.

As it's usual with romhacks, you need an original ROM of the game in order to apply the patch and convert the original monochrome GB ROM into "Mole Mania DX" for the Game Boy Color. Those interested in trying out this fan-made remastered colourization can do so by visiting Marc's website and providing your own ROM for Marc's online patcher to do its work and patch the ROM automatically with the DX romhack.

He once hinted for a Release in late 2022 but since then 3 years have passed with close to no updates.
He was commissioned for Trip World DX and Ninja JaJaMaru: The Great World Adventure. If he is mostly working on licensed projects, that will postpone FTFTBT, and also lessen his public postings.

people have said its engine is the basis for Link's Awakening (I think someone debunked that, but who knows.).
Toruzz debunked it. The code is too different to have been shared. He lists several reasons in a series of X posts.

This is great and I will definetly play this. But what I'm really still waiting for is the DX version of For The Frog The Bell Tolls (Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru) which was a project of Toruzz years ago that apparently he now has abandoned.

Meanwhile I'm also still waiting for my physical copy of Ninja JajaMaru (also a work of Toruzz) that I've pre-ordered 2 years ago: https://www.strictlylimitedgames.com/products/oira-jajamaru-sekai-daibouken-game-boy-color
God damn it!

any way i can play this on real hardware but on a bigger screen ? like somekind of supernintendo gameboyplayer
Super Gameboy for SNES support only GB, not GBC mode, therefore this hack is not SGB Enchanced game anymore.
Because it works in GBC mode I see that SGB border in emulators is missing too.

From what I saw, there's a gameplay video that shows the actual SGB border around the game screen, which makes me suppose that the hack can be played through the unofficial CGB+SGB mode. The only other colorization to do this is Kirby's Dream Land 2 DX.

Other than a Gamecube + Game Boy Player, or a SNES + Super Game Boy?
There are some mods to add TV out to a GBA console. But, for home use, I would go with a GBA consolizer. They can be quite expensive for what they are, though.
I should be receiving one soon (a GBAHD kit)... but apparently customs has something to say about it.

For sure gameyob on DS can't do this, so I did custom border if anyone want to try it out.

Look forward to playing this.
Seeing it in colour, I can see that Bomberman quest on GBC took a lot of asset and graphical inspiration from Mole Mania

Fuck Startopics. Fuck F-Zero. Fuck Earthbound. Fuck Wario Land.

Nintendo, give me new Mole Mania, you cowards.

@Hadrian

What did you just say about StarTropics?

Tshort;DR: Even though the first game has the clunkiest controls known to man, I'll still go to bat for StarTropics. StarTropics 2's soundtrack alone is an underappreciated gem.
