Hacking need help chossing a drive for my modded wii as well as loading games

so i have a modded wii with gamecube ports. i have already modded it with modmii, my question is should i use a usb thumb drive to play my WIi and gamecube games or should i use an SSD and a sata to usb ADAPTER? also should i use NTFS or FAT32? lastly how do i install games i used to use a program years ago called Wii backup manager or something like that

It's recommended using an external hard drive (with a Y-splitter USB cable) and definitely not a USB drive.

If you want to play GameCube games, the partition must be formatted as FAT32.

I split mine into 2 partitions so I don't have to deal with split WBFS files. One for GameCube (FAT32), then the other for Wii (NTFS). The FAT32 partition MUST be first otherwise it won't be recognized.

@master801 can you clarify why an eternal hdd is recommended over a usb also can you link me to this Y splitter cable plz lastly is there a guide that show how to set up the hdd for gamecub and WBFS files so that both usbloadergx and nintendont can see there perspective games

FWIW I use the y-splitter method on my WiiU, but my Wii has one of those WD "My Passport" external drives plugged directly into the Wii with its original, single-line cable. And it has worked just fine for years.

You can use an USB thumb drive, but as far as I know they're usually not recommended because they're not really designed for this use case and this can wear them out pretty quickly.

Also to my knowledge you need the y splitter cable only if you're using an external HDD for your Wii U and you don't need one for the regular Wii as that has enough power to give to the HDD reliably.
Someone might correct me on this but you may not need a y splitter cable for the Wii U at all if you're using an SSD as that uses less power, I tried it and it works fine, but then again, you're using a regular Wii so this doesn't really matter
