Nintendo is increasing the price of the Switch and other accessories in the US

swotchprice.png

As a result of "market conditions", Nintendo has decided to increase the price of a number of products. Starting August 3rd, all original Nintendo Switch models (including the OLED and Lite) will see a price hike, in addition to the Alarmo, amiibo, and other Switch and Switch 2 accessories. The Nintendo Switch 2 and its games will not see any price changes, at this time, though Nintendo does state that price adjustments to those items might still happen in the future. Nintendo did not specify what the new prices will be in the United States--at the time of writing, a Switch OLED Edition retails for $349.99, a Lite retails for $199.99, and the original Switch model is priced at $299.99.

[UPDATE] American retailer Target has already changed the prices of the Nintendo Switch units on its website, ahead of the date Nintendo specified. Currently, the original Switch has an MSRP of $339.99, the OLED is $399.99, and the Lite is $229.99.

As much as I love to rip on Nintendo, we can't put this one on them specifically. All the other console hardware already increased in price, and the prices of everything outside the gaming industry have gone up too. A crash/recession wouldn't harm billionaires at all, so Trump is happy to play reckless games with the economy.
I mean, this isn't just about prices, just look at how Microsoft is forcing users of Windows 10 to 11 with the demand of "newer hardware" even when in that case, Not only was Windows 11 more than able to be ran on old hardware, but was arbitrarily forced with the exception of hacks you had to do to bypass it, one of which was offically sanctioned by MS before they nuked it from thier support page but also gave them the ability to just stop giving you updates if they so wanted, all while gutting Windows 10 support in (at time of writing) 2 months from now just to force the hands of people who still want to use Windows at all.

This instance is hardware you could buy being hiked up despite nearly several years of being the same price yet likely won't impact much even in the long term since the Switch nearly toppled the PS2's sales (before Sony made 5 million PS2 sales out of thin air) so anyone who wanted to buy a switch already got one and those who wanted to dump physical copies of games don't even need a Switch to do so anyways so you might as well up that price to pump out those extra numbers and pin the blame on the terrifs (Even though a lot of Switch 1s, including the one i have are made in china so it's a half-truth.)

Not that I'm advocating for this because it's clearly price gouging and nothing more but...

This is 100% Nintendo lol, they know people only still buy switch 1s to pirate games, so they're bumping the price to squeeze money money out of pirates. Nintendo hopes people just move to the switch 2, where they have a lot more control over the hardware, cheap switch 1s is not how you achieve that.
Not even remotely true, modded Switchs make up around 1% of the total sold at most, and softmod compatible Switchs have been exclusive to the secondhand market for years now. Nobody who was considering buying a Switch Lite is now gonna run out and buy a Switch 2 for more than double the price, either. The few people left who want a Switch and haven't bought one yet are a lot more likely to buy used now, which does not benefit Nintendo at all. This isn't a 5D chess move, when the cost of importing a product goes up, that cost is passed on to the consumer, simple as.

Nintendo is willing to eat the cost of tariffs on Switch 2 for now because they want the strong sales numbers to continue through the holiday season for the sake of investor confidence. I'd assume the price will be going up right after the new year though.

Kill emulator development, raise prices of legit products. We are playing 1.5D tic-tac-toe at this point.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
I USE THE SWITCHES TO COMPARE PRICES!!!
Basically, more expensive than an OLED? Prob not worth it.
Cheaper than a Lite? Might be junk or is an interesting new indie console.
Around the price of the Switch? Fair price.
BUT NOW???
COME ON
NOW I HAVE TO LOOK FOR SOMETHING ELSE TO COMPARE IT TO

This is how you kill a console. Look at Octopath Traveler. It’s not even going to be available for Switch. More will follow.

With Switch dying slowly in front of everyone, those devs, and whoever else works for that team, can now focus on Switch 2.

Probably will stop seeing firmware updates soon too.

Wow what a f@cking time for Big N after 8 years they get to raise the price after selling 153+ mil units 👏 .. what the hell is this market condition bs biggest load of $hit since y2k 🤯

So...y'all want to switch to PC gaming? The price gap is smaller. Looks like consoles are catching up to PC's like they said, at least in terms of expenses.

I understand your point, but pricing the OLED at $399,99 is not justifiably. By doing that, Nintendo sees their 8 year old hardware as next gen. Why wouldn't you add $50 and buy a Switch 2 at that point.

Oh don't get me wrong, I certainly wouldn't pay that price for it. There's always Steam Deck as the better alternative, or if you really wanted a Switch OLED, get one used on eBay. Switch 2 probably isn't worth it for most people at this point, and a big issue to note with it is that the screen response time is worse than even the LCD Switch. OLED screens completely blow it out of the water.

Could be a weird way to push more Switch 2 sales. If the price difference between Switch 1 and Switch 2 is small then it's easier to justify spending a little bit more for the latest console. It also makes the Switch 2 look cheaper if the price difference is small. I don't necessarily think price hikes are ever received well though.

It's also possible that they already took import taxes (more or less) into account when pricing the switch 2. They could've been expected when the switch 2 was priced (but not when the switch 1 was priced).

The world situation aside, I think ninty is happy to do so as well. It help would drive switch 2 sales since it is now somewhat less financially compelling to get the original switch brand new versus buying a new switch 2.
