I have been troubleshooting this issue for several days, but I cannot get to the bottom of what's going on.

Issue

Some boot attempts, especially when the console is left off for a period of time, result in the console freezing and failing to boot.
The DVD drive will either click twice or produce a squeal (I think the laser moving), then nothing. No display via HDMI (monitor doesn't detect an input), the gamepad doesn't connect, nothing.
I do have a legit copy of Mario Kart 8 in the console if that matters. It hasn't left the console.
I recorded a video of such an event (yt link if the video below dies).

Yes, I know I spelt squeal wrong.

Relevant Information

The console has been sitting in storage for a very long time, unplayed. I purchased it for the purpose of homebrewing. I formatted the memory and made sure it could play discs. After confirming that, I installed Aroma via the wiiu.hacks and the Minute Menu via ISFShax so that I could use a partitioned SD card as storage.

Everything worked great, then I started noticing these boot errors. Seemed to happen more often when the console was left off for 30 minutes or more. Sometimes, it could happen 2 or more times in a row.

I made a comment post in the Aroma Release and ISFShax Release pages, but I couldn't solve the issue.

I tried about everything I could think of, from swapping SD cards, reinstalling the Minute menu, checking the CMOS battery, booting without an SD card, etc.

A couple of months went by as work got more stressful, and I began troubleshooting it again yesterday.

After seeing no change, I began uninstalling the Minute menu, removing the bootloader, and formatting the memory, but that didn't seem to make a meaningful difference from what I can tell. This is a difficult problem to reproduce with how much time I have to let it sit and how inconsistent it is.

I do not know if this is an issue with this stock Wiiu, or some issue that was caused when installing Aroma and/or the Minute menu. I would hope that removing the bootloader and Minute would revert my Wiiu to stock, but I wouldn't know enough to know if either left files on the NAND (not to accuse the devs, but I simply do not know).

I'll keep monitoring it to see if anything changes.

I heard that the NAND chips in these consoles tend to fail, so I hope this isn't an early sign of that. To me, it seems a little too inconsistent for that, but I don't know.

I think I would first try removing your physical game and see if that yields more consistent results.

That is unwise, just guessing:

Have you copied fw.img to SLC using haxcopy? Or you just try to boot ISFShax on SD? Maybe you just have a faulty SD or bad SD slot. Rule these two factors out first.

If the symptom continues after copying fw.img to SLC then maybe there is something wrong on the hardware side, maybe a faulty RAM.

I kept the game in for consistency in spite of the issue being inconsistent (I didn't want to change more variables than I needed to).

I would find it very odd for a game in the disk drive to have any influence over boot behaviour, but I will give it a shot.

Just have to observe it over the next day or two.

I did use Haxcopy and cycled through a couple of different SD cards just in case any of them were bad, and there were no noticeable changes.

The console functions fine if it boots normally, so I hope it isn't anything hardware-related. That seems to be the only thing that can explain it at this point.

Are there any homebrew applications that test hardware? I didn't think of looking for any.

I was able to get the issue to surface without a disk inserted. So far, just once in about 10 or so successful boots.

It is still very inconsistent, unfornetly.

With the failed boot, the disk drive doesn't make any unusual sounds from what I can tell. But, again, no display, and the gamepad doesn't connect.

The console knows after a forced power off that it wasn't turned off properly. The message pops up on the next boot.

Off topic, are u using Aroma? this message should be disabled by aroma on default.

At current stage just keep ISFShax installed and copy to SLC, this can prevent SD's factor play at booting stage.
If symptom remains, then it is a faulty hardware.
If the console can boot and play games normally, then maybe a power circuit issue/bad power supply?

I removed everything software-related to eliminate as many factors as I could. I had backups on hand in case, but thankfully, I didn't have to use them.

I'll try another power supply to see if that does anything different.

The minute menu config file makes sure that the wii u automatically boots. Check the tv for any output of the minute menu. RE-ADD ALL THE REMOVED FILES OF ISFSHAX. Also do you have any custom themes? Sometimes i had issues with randomized themes and the wii u just didn't boot. Remove any custom themes off the SD card.

An update, I tried a different power supply for my other Wiiu U and no dice. Tried booting this morning, and had three back-to-back non-boots in a row (not unusual, as far as this problem is concerned). It boots and freezes, I force shutdown, it boots and freezes, I force shut down, etc.

I have removed the bootloader that was part of the Aroma install, uninstalled the minute menu (and ISFSHAX), and no longer have an SD card in my console. My understanding is that WiiU is back to a stock/vanilla configuration.

During initial troubleshooting with this problem, I tried different displays and HDMI cables, but since the console doesn't connect to the gamepad when it boots into a frozen state, I don't think that is a meaningful factor.

It's really pointing to something within the console, as that is the only option remaining. Hopefully, it isn't failing RAM or NAND, but I would think those issues to be far more consistent and telling than an occasional non-boot. I haven't opened up a Wiiu before, so I don't expect to find anything meaningful probing around.

I personally think its sadly dead, i'm not the best person when it comes to ISFShax. Didn't remove any files or messed around to much. But if that doesn't work or any other methods explained in this post. There's little hope.

Do you have a hynix chip?? Sounds like it's dying if so.

TLDR: I have a Toshiba eMMc, but a corrupt MLC.bin file (#15) from NANDdumper may suggest it is beginning to fail. I hope to generate a crash log to add evidence to that idea.

Oh boy, well, that was a hell of a rabbit hole you sent me down.

I have heard the Wii U did have NAND problems, but I assumed it would manifest in more... dramatic ways (like, games being unable to boot off internal memory and spitting error codes).

Stumbled onto this GBAtemp post about identifying the hardware via the WIIUIdent homebrew software. It seems the Hynix eMMCs are indeed a known issue sparking a short, but telling tale of their failure.

To get WIIUIdent, of course, means I need to homebrew my WiiU again.

While I was waiting for the NANDdumper, I found @SDIO's Ultimate Wii U Troubleshooting Guide, a resource I should have searched for a long time ago. The symptoms I'm having are similar to those of an OS crash (I will triple-check it isn't a display issue, but for the console not to connect to my gamepad seems like a dead giveaway). My console doesn't freeze while installing games or homebrew software, nor did it produce any memory error codes, so it's hard to say if it's the definite issue.

Once the NANDdumper finished, and I went to move the files onto my PC, there was some good solid evidence that the eMMC is failing. I did the optional backup of the mlc, and 1 of the 15 bin files (bin15) was corrupted. I'll try running the dumper again.

I checked WIIUIDent, and I am running a 0X11 Toshiba eMMC. (As an aside, the WIIUIdent database was very interesting to thumb through.)

I'm letting the NANDdumper run again, so whatever happens happens. After that, I'll try an get a Crashlog using WiiUCrashLogDumper and getting ISFShax and Minute Menu back on this wiiu in order to get backups from there.

Every and ALL EMMC chips die eventually, the Hynix ones on WiiU just are too high in terms of the failing rate.
So a Toshiba is also subjected to emmc error. However, this is MLC, and since you have ISFShax installed, it should gave you almost 100% guarantee to boot at least to minute menu, so your problem lies elsewhere.

Without tearing it apart and diagnose with professional tools it's hard to tell.

That seems to be the case. There is only so much I can do externally. I'll just have to keep an eye on it incase the emmc starts showing signs of failure.

Second NANDdump had the same corrupted MLC.bin #15.

I got Aroma and ISFShad back installed onto this WiiU. I'll monitor it for now, but I may just have to live with it.

Going off of @SDIO's Ultimate Wii U Troubleshooting Guide, I can say with some degree of confidence it is an OS crash. The console doesn't respond when tapping the power button in its frozen state; however, the eject button still operates the disk drive as normal (since it is empty, it tries to pull in a disk and eject a disk out).

I used WiiUCrashLogDumper to look for the keywords that @SDIO mentioned in the "Failing eMMC" section (MEDIA ERROR and DATA CORRUPTION). I was unable to find those keywords as well as seemingly unable to generate a recent log. Not sure if the app is detecting or can detect a pre-boot crash. All 5 logs that I've generated have been exactly the same.

I set the console's date and time to the current date and time before a crash. So whenever the logs were generated, it wasn't recent (I didn't set the date and time when I reformatted the console's memory a couple of days ago, I left them at default).

Use USBMLC, a SATA adapter, NAND-AID, or RedNAND.

By SATA adapter, I mean the disk drive to SATA since it uses the SATA interface.

I'll keep these in mind if things get worse. No doubt memory to SD card swap is in the future for this console, but time will tell.

RedNAND is interesting, and something I can try. Not sure how well it will work with everything I'm asking the SD card to do, but "nothing ventured" as they say. I'll have to do more reading up on it.

What do you mean by corrupted mlc.bin?

But that doesn't sound like a bad eMMC.

For testing you could try disabling the disc drive by setting the SATA SEEPROM type to none in the backup and restore menu in minute.

At this point, I should've really DMed you instead of asking the same question four times.

What do you mean by corrupted mlc.bin?

I'll get another NAND dump and show what I see on Windows 11, but currently, I am unable to start the NANDdumper, for some reason (gamepad flashes a pink screen and the console reboots). Disabling Aroma autobooting instead just kicks me to the environment loader.

I don't remember if I needed to do anything different when getting my NAND dumps before, so I'm a bit lost on what to do there. Tried going through and browser exploit and via startup (holding B), but both had the same result.

If memory serves me, I had an error screen on Windows when I tried to move that particular mlc.bin file, and after that error, file explorer was reporting it as being empty, or, rather, having nothing on it (it had 0 size). My only choice was to delete it off the SD card.

But that doesn't sound like a bad eMMC.

That is comforting to hear, but that takes me back to square one, where I have no idea what's going on.

I was able to do that. The disk drive still mechanically works, as in it still pulls in and ejects disks, but it would appear that the SATA is disabled, as it doesn't even attempt to read the disks.

I'll monitor it for a day or two to see if that has any meaningful impact on the boot behavior.

If oyu have ISFShax installed the nanddumper payload won't work, that is expected. But you don't need it since you can dump the slcs in minute.

That would indicate a problem with the SD card, but not the MLC. Even if the mlc was corrupted, the files on the SD card could still be read.

Yes, lets see if that changes something.

That explains the behavior, then. Is there an operation like that on Minute to dump the MLC bins, or does the SLC and OTP dumps make that redundant?

That would indicate a problem with the SD card, but not the MLC. Even if the mlc was corrupted, the files on the SD card could still be read.

Curious, as that would be the first sign that this SD card may be faulty. Not uncommon, as I see this with DSi consoles sometimes, especially since I'm running a micro SD card with an adapter. I can swap to a full-sized card, but previous tests indicated the SD card wasn't the issue. So I'm a bit befuddled by the idea that the same Mlc.bin file became corrupted, at least as far as Windows is concerned, twice.

Thinking on it, and looking at the total size of the MLC Dump, it is entirely possible I filled the SD card during the dump, and Nanddumper had to abort at mlc bin 15. That would at least explain why it never fully dumped the last bin.

Yes, lets see if that changes something.

I got a few failed boots with similar behavior. No noticeable changes. Disc drive does one cycle of pulling in and ejecting a disk before, seemingly, freezing. No display, and the gamepad fails to connect.

I did confirm that the SATA disc drive line is still disabled

There is not much of a point dumping the MLC. And if someone really wants it, it can be achived trough the format redNAND option, which will write the MLC to a partition

Yes that would be a explaination

I got a few failed boots with similar behavior. No noticeable changes. Disc drive does one cycle of pulling in and ejecting a disk before, seemingly, freezing. No display, and the gamepad fails to connect.

I did confirm that the SATA disc drive line is still disabled
Ok then you can enable the drive again by setting it to ROM drive.

What you could also try would be disabling Standby Services in the settings if that makes a difference. Also clould you try without a SD or with another SD? Looking again at the logs above in post #13 it looks like the SD card has a hardware problem.
(idx 0 is the sdcard I belive and idx 3 the mlc)
