Mario Kart 64 decomp gets ported to PC

Harbour Masters--the team behind porting decompilation projects such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, and others to PC--has done it again. The recently completed decompilation for Mario Kart 64 has now been ported over to PC, allowing you to play the game natively, instead of having to imperfectly emulate it. Of course, in order to build the port, you'll have to have your own copy of Mario Kart 64 backed up. A Nintendo Switch build and Steam Deck/Linux build are also available. The project is available to download from GitHub, linked in the source.

Tripping? In a kart? How? Sure I slip on bananas, if that's what you mean. :ninja:
If you change directions too fast in 150cc you start spinning the same way you would if you touched a banana peel. That mechanic only exists in Mario Kart 64 and it is insanely stupid.

Can't wait for the mod to keep the music ON during 3 and 4 player matches!

Also, I'm hopeful for a decomp of this. As Square doesn't know the game exist, and I ragequitted trying to run it on Switch via emulation, as the sound and music crunch kept distracting me. Some difficulty mods would be really cool.

Would it be possible to do anything with the camera? The swaying camera always gave me a headache. I know it's the way it is to maintain the 3D illusion and perspective of the kart racer but my god is it obnoxious. And seeing it happening in widescreen at 60fps just exacerbates the whole thing.

Some coding wizard needs to eradicate it somehow

That brings memories of magazines from the 90's, nowadays they use AI for kids magazines. 🤮
Those renders really take me back. I remember my early days on the internet, and I found a ton of official Yoshi renders related to Yoshi's Story. I thought to myself, "why have I never seen these in the official Nintendo magazines?" To be honest, I don't think I recognize some of those Mario Kart 64 renders, either. Maybe I was too busy with schoolwork or something. Still, it'd be nice to go back to the late 90's, especially around the time of Ocarina of Time's release. Even though the N64 was a turbulent time for Nintendo and its fans, it was still a great time to be alive.

I'm afraid to ask what children's magazines look like, these days. Nintendo Power was all we needed back in the day.

I would flip my mother loving dung if there would be a decomp from F-Zero GX.

X I always found it a little too twitchy.

I find it interesting that it appears a full decompilation of MK64 is finished and will likely have many easy to install mods before an original modular kart racer released as an indie game.

My thought being that there's clearly a void for a modable kart racing game, and instead of that being created an older game was instead entirely reverse engineered.
I had the same sentiment, but I guess the best we got in that regard is Robotnik's Ring Racer

That game is insanely impressive visually considering it's running in a fork of the Doom 2 engine. There's animated textures and moving environment set pieces all over the place.
