Switch 2 Requires a Firmware Update Out of the Box.

The original switch 1 needed a small patch to enable exfat.

Though it was said to be needed to use sdxc cards. (which is only in part true as you can format sdxc cards as fat32 and then they would not need said patch to be downloaded on the switch 1).

So this could remain true on switch 2 to enable exfat for game storage.

Though who knows if you can still store games on a fat32 partition on a switch 2. I guess we will find out more next week.
I'd definitely hope this is the case as exFat is a shitty filesystem lol

Okay so question.
Since i got 2, Would it be better to just keep one of them in the box or update the second one, activate everything on 2.00 and put it back in the box?
Just activate both and throw the one back in the box after the day 1 patch.

It's not a fun trend to see.
I don't care if other systems like ps5 have done something like it for the disc drive, I want things to be functional without internet.

Hmm okay, Hopefully i don't need an SD express card to activate that slot. I know the switch 1 needs an sd card to hack, better safe to grab one i guess. Also if i don't update it now, any time there's an new update it will always update to the newest one.
However we know the forced update is supposed to be a BIG one. Damn it!

So you either update or you don't get to use what you bought... Great, Nintendo.

I'll just have to update regardless.

I'll activate and then use a DNS blocker. Bought a bunch of Switch 1 games to play on it.

This is a totally different device than the Switch. There is no reason to assume anything will be the same with regards to modding. Get a third one so you can leave one untouched, activate the 2nd, and play on the third. Might as well get another for each firmware update in case just maybe in 10 years a software exploit is found for version 3.1.12.

As for Switch 1 games needing updates on switch 2...
There are over 15000 games. Many are still in testing phase. Some are not working and some are working.

I imagine in my mind that there might be a whitelist with each firmware update adding more games as they are ready to go. And besides the white list it... individual games may also require a specific version patch/game update that it was tested with and also required for the game to run on a switch 2.

So you might learn very little inserting 1 game card on an not updated switch 2. Might have to try a bunch.

I don't like the internet requirement either..... but due to the backwards compatibility and the large number of titles there are... this console probably won't run super well without the internet until we have had a several "stability updates" and perhaps numerous "game updates". Who knows?????? Not any of us at the moment.

There are so many variables, I plan on opening a Switch 2 security research and development discord server,
(Its already ready) and id like as much info and opinions on the matter.
I will post a new forum specifically for this.

No it's just a system update is required to enable SD storage and Switch 1 backwards compat.

Xbox/360 BC on Xone was a downloaded (enhanced) version, and the disc acted as a key, as I remember

360 games on One/Series are remasters/enhancements so it's not like we would be able to play straight from the disc. Beside, it's slower.

Switch 1 titles on Switch 2 are also emulated, not native like DS on 3DS or PS1 on PS2

Partially emulated. The T239's Cortex A78C CPU can handle the Tegra X1's Cortex A57 CPU code natively, but the GPU needs at least some translation because the Ampere architecture cannot handle Maxwell GPU instructions and its pre-compiled shader binaries as-is.

So the best thing to do is update it NOW and not later, than just throw it back in the box?
The first update wont really matter in the long run?
Day 1 patches are almost always just online activation or stuff they didn't have fully ready for launch so yes.

This was DEFINITELY so zero leaked footage can show up on the internet before launch
The Switch 1 had this exact same thing with update 2.0.0. But this check appears to just be for NS1 backwards compatibility so it may just be downloading the latest build of their backwards compatibility layer.

With everyone being advised to update (I'm guessing that's exactly what Nintendo wants) it would be funny if the only ever exploit ends up being on launch firmware.

Of course, your case (1) can happen.

On the other side, it can also happen (2), that
- 1.0.0 and 2.0.0 will be the only ever exploitable firmwares
- and you will need to update to 2.0.0 to play games
- and you will not be able to update to 2.0.0 at some point in the future

For me, the case (2) is a more realistic scenario.

Absolutely stunning. Congratulations for purchasing (or getting through other means) the Nintendo Switch 2 before everyone else. Too bad you have to wait for June 5th to fully experience the console like everybody else! I know that this site tends to have people that jump on the hate bandwagon for Nintendo, but I hope that this is one of the few exceptions to this cause I don't see anything wrong with this. You might aswell discover with tbe homebrew community some potential stuff Nintendo forgotten to fix so you can develop a proof of concept CFW thing for the Switch 2....
