Yes they prance and bounce most adorably along the bottom of the water, but it will do them no good if they fell in a body of water too big to reach the edge of before they run out of oxygen. Hence the drowning.

Or did I misinterpret your original question? I guess another possible answer to why the hippo is drowning could be "because his fucking boat is on fire jfc"

You're right. That's a river barge so I assumed they were in a river, or somewhere else with the shore within reach.
