GVNGNIR'S DYNASTY WARRIORS 2 - ENHANCED

Dynasty Warriors 3 - Xtreme Legends_SLUS-20617_20250211180815IMAGE.png

DOWNLOADS AND SCREENSHOTS BELOW!

Hello!
I have returned, yet again, after a longer than anticipated amount of time, with my upscale of Dynasty Warriors 2!

This is a remaster of everything in Dynasty Warriors 2 up to 4k standards, including advanced interpretive AI upscaling of environments and models, maintaining the original atmosphere whilst generating the highest possible quality textures. Alongside this are hand made UI elements, high quality portrait replacements, smooth fonts remade from the ground up, hand adjusted or replaced icons, not to mention countless other details improved or altered. I endeavour to keep as close as possible to the original atmosphere and tone with tasteful tweaks and quality of life additions. The idea isn't to have some element be jarringly out of place, but to allow the textures to work together as intended from the original artists, with enhancements where appropriate. The philosophy taken here is that of respect towards the original intent and artistry, only deviating from this where it can be justified.

This pack is designed to work alongside patches and fixes found on the Musou Warriors Discord, which add things such as greater field of view, camera angles, increased model count, increased draw distance and advanced AI. Head here to grab these > discord.gg/pS3MrZ59gA <.

This should run on the latest nightly build of PCSX2. If you are having problems with crashes or stuttering, please disable both asynchronous and precached textures from the graphics settings, as this can cause memory leaks. Vulkan works well for me, but experiment with the most stable renderer for you. FXAA and Internal resolution set as high as possible is the best antialiasing available, but if that is either not possible or not enough, utilise your system antialiasing to the fullest extent or use 3rd party tools like reshade with antialiasing or blur filters.

This represents hundreds of hours of work, with much more to be improved and added upon over the coming months, so if possible please consider donating. These games deserve the attention! Thanks. :)

Send a coffee to the cause.

Enjoy and all the best!

Does this need to be used in any special way or just the vanilla game?

Its for the north american version of Dynasty Warriors 2 for use in PCSX2, using the latest nightly build you can get. You can play it totally vanilla like this, or you can get patches from the musou warriors discord to improve the gameplay and camera and graphics and so on which I highly recommend.

But yeah, its a simple texture replacement.

Thanks I put a ton of hours into this back then and this provides me a reason to go play it once more. Hope to see more from you soon :grog:.

I appreciate you brother! My first PS2 game growing up, absolutely captured me as a kid every day after school, and just so happens to not be nostalgia that made me enjoy this. Its actually a great game. The character designs, the music, the maps, the ethereal atmosphere, all of it was so good. On paper a later entry into the series should be better, but there is just a kind of magic to the earliest entries that the newer ones lack. I've just started work on DW4XL, and I have already finished 3/XL and 5/XL. My aim is to do all of the PS2 warriors games, and deliver them as a complete package to the same standard, with eventually a nice home page and optional extras and stuff. I'm sure I will be around for a long while doing this. I am literally obsessed :P

Which kind of tools do you use? I tried my luck with some upscalers but unsucessful.

Also excellent work man!

Sorry for the late reply, brother. I use quite a few tools, but honestly — anyone can and should get into texture modding. It’s way more straightforward than it looks.

Here's what I use regularly:

  • Topaz Gigapixel AI (v8) – My main tool for upscaling. It’s insanely high quality, with smooth, beginner-friendly batch processing through a simple GUI.
  • Topaz Photo AI – I use this for colour correction and light balancing. Also great for batch processing and just as easy to use.

Both are pricey, but honestly, nothing else really compares — so I just forked out for them.

For image editing and creative stuff:

  • Photoshop – The most powerful tool for the job, but I don't use it due to its complexity making things slower when dealing with thousands of images.
  • Paint.NET – Great for specific tweaks, like mixing denoised skin onto detailed outfit textures. Lightweight, easy to use, and actually fun.
  • SORA – I’ve been using this lately for AI-based reinterpretations. It’s not always accurate, but it can spark some cool creative ideas.
  • ImageMagick – My go-to for converting and batch editing images. I use it with simple scripts (made with ChatGPT) to convert PNG ↔ DDS, tweak alpha levels, split RGB/alpha channels, and more. You don’t need to know any code — just get the script made and drag & drop your image folders.
  • XNConvert – Handy GUI app for batch changes if you don’t want to mess with scripts.

Pro tip: Do all your editing in PNG format, and only convert to DDS at the very end of your workflow.

Other stuff I’ve used:

  • Upscayl – Free, simple GUI upscaler. Great starting point.
  • ESRGAN – More involved, but delivers solid results if you’re up for tweaking.
  • Waifu2x – Bit old-school, but still good for certain styles.

Final advice:

If you can’t get your hands on the Topaz tools, I’d recommend starting with Upscayl, paired with GIMP or Paint.NET, plus ImageMagick for batch conversion. You can literally drag and drop dumped textures into your workflow and upscale an entire game in one go.

If you want to go deeper, you can separate textures by type (like outfits, environments, UI, etc.) and process them differently depending on what they need.

And most importantlyalways make backups. Multiple backups. Keep a clean, untouched copy of your original textures. Keep your folder structure tidy and consistent. If you don’t, it’s very easy to lose track of what you’ve done, and that kills your momentum fast.
