I would like to come out of the gate saying I'm a tech guy, but I'm no AI apologist. Like everything in this world, it is very clearly that there are pros and cons. I will also say that my total exposure to "social media" at this point in my life is GBATemp and Youtube comments. Even in that rather minuscule world of the online sphere I see, I encounter such vitriol and disdain for any instance of generative AI tools regardless of the context or amount of usage. I remember the first time I saw a negative reaction that seemed so unwarranted was this video

From what I understand, the artist here wanted to show off their animation skills, but couldn't afford any VAs so they went ahead and had some AI dubbing. No one lost a job. In fact, it could be argued that this helped display an indie artists vision more fully than was possible before, but people were appalled.

I see other examples of this all the time. I watched a DankPods (musician) video today where he mentioned using ChatGPT to help build his website and while feedback was mostly positive, there was a large enough crowd acting as if he had killed their cat.

I get it, I really do. I understand all of the economic, moral, and ecological concerns with gen AI stuff, but a lot of this will improve and reach a balance in time. Especially with things like DeepSeek. Anecdotally, I have been able to leverage GenAI to do and learn things at so much of a faster rate than ever before. So much of learning is doing and things like chatbots can take out or streamline so much of the barrier to getting started. I've been able to learn about Networking, Game Development, 3D printing, Docker and other things so quickly because I am not spending so much time scouring the internet reading bad answers or not being able to find my specific issue. It is genuine learning too because if I encounter similar issues or problems later, I am able to solve them without assistance.

I don't know. I guess I'm just venting some frustration. I know people aren't generally stupid, but it just feels like people are regurgitating a couple talking points they heard in a sensationalist podcast and have declared these tools the root of all evil. Or maybe it's a politics thing. Whatever. There's no real thesis or anything here. Just some disjointed and rambling thought, but what are you going to do? Ban me? (Maybe lol)

AI is the future. I use it on a daily base, from programming to brainstorming. It's a tool that helps bridging the gaps in our skills. Most people against it, are just afraid that it will replace a lot of jobs. While this is true, there is no stopping it anymore.

because all companies train their ai on stolen content, usually content from small creators
Okay, so be mad at the companies? Why be mad at small creators or other individuals for leveraging a helpful tool to accelerate learning, increase personal productivity, or achieve goals they didn't previously have the bandwidth for?

It's hard to find an apt comparison because I can't think of many other tools that people think are quite so evil, but I guess guns would be the closest thing. Like if you're someone who hates the notion that guns even exist, are you gonna be pissed off at the guy who uses one to stop someone from killing their family?

From me:
I have not seen anti AI here at gbatemp. Grok tend to take too long but it's not bad. AI is going to be the next digital divide. Some people only just learned to use google and now this.

after Grok:
"I've noticed that GBAtemp doesn't seem to have a strong anti-AI vibe—it's more like a mix of curiosity and skepticism, which feels fair for a tech-savvy crowd. Grok, for instance, can be a bit slow to respond, but it’s honestly not bad once you get used to it. That said, AI is shaping up to be the next big digital divide. Think about it: some people only recently figured out how to use Google effectively, and now they’re hit with this whole new wave of technology. It’s exciting, but it’s also going to challenge us all to keep up—or risk being left behind. What do you think about how AI might change the playing field?"

Why This Works:

  • Clarity: I refined "I have not seen anti AI here at gbatemp" into a more nuanced observation about the community’s tone, making it less absolute and more conversational.
  • Specificity: Mentioning Grok’s slowness but affirming its quality keeps your point intact while smoothing out the phrasing.
  • Big Picture: The "digital divide" idea is expanded slightly to connect it to the Google learning curve you mentioned, making the comparison sharper.
  • Engagement: I added a question at the end to invite discussion, which fits the forum-like context of GBAtemp.

I think it is doing too much.

after Deepseek:
"I haven’t seen much anti-AI sentiment here on GBATemp. Grok tends to take a while, but it’s not bad overall. AI is poised to become the next digital divide. Some people have only just gotten comfortable using Google, and now this new wave of technology is upon us."

I think Deepseek won this time.

The issue is poor use of AI where it is obvious and used by big companies to cheap out instead of using actual talent. If big companies are offering content that single individuals are producing and at times worse and yet want to market it as replacement of actual real work.

If they want to cheap out then the product they are slling needs to be cheaper.

As an example want to market a beer with an AI ad then that beer needs to be sold at over 50% off since they are no longer spending thousands to millions for marketing.

Same with games, you want to use AI for video, pics, voice acting, textures then do not expect sell it at equilavent price to game that is not using AI, sell it US$10 at most but not that wont, the game companies, especially watering at the mouth to eliminate thousands of jobs and want to still sell it at full price.

It has proven that talented individuals in minutes to hours produce great content, same content can be created by hundreds and spend months and yet companies want to exploit this and if they can will try to make you pay even more for the fact AI is used.

Which is all well and good, but the scope of this discussion extends to individuals or small groups. Companies is a different beast entirely.

I think in this type of scenario the most one should do is let karma do it's thing, people spout about how AI will never replace the real thing yadyada and while this is enitrely true, if one knows that why go through the lengths to attack and whine which in any scenario doesn't exactly help the situation, it's just a matter of knowing where you stand, not supporting it, and move on with your life.

What we are calling “AI” isn’t actual artificial intelligence. It’s just programs modifying from the material that are being fed, which is almost exclusively made from forced opt-in and stolen content. Not to mention the damage it’s causing to the environment for literal slop. All on top of the fact that every tech company is forcing it down our throats, all pushing out actual unfinished trash.

Yes, it isn't really AI but it's a fine catchall and people know what I'm talking about. I didn't see much of a point to waxing poetic as to what is and isn't actually "AI".

As for the rest of your points though, that is still talking about it at a corporate level. Be mad at that all you want, but I and countless other individuals are not running GPU farms, scraping web content. All of that is happening regardless of whether or not I use it. Why be mad at me and other individuals for improving their quality of life. That's the piece I don't understand.

I doubly don't understand it when it comes to things like programming. Is Joe Average who left some python code on stack overflow really getting ripped off if an AI bot was trained on his answer? i don't know about anyone else, but I'm not posting on forums hoping to get published or make money. In fact, if some quality answer I give is used to help other people via the medium of a chatbot, I don't give two shits whether or not it says "SecureBoot" on it.

Don’t take this personally, but I don’t care what you are doing or what you are using for AI. As it stands, AI is killing the planet for literally a pointless gimmick being used by corporations to make slop. I don’t care how it breaks down, AI is pointless trash that needs to stop

Maybe people don't like the so-called hallucinations.
Who would want to be falsely called a murderer by some LLM? But that is precisely what ChatGPT did with very recently with a real person.
There are still huge problems and the companies running those systems don't give a damn about the consequences and deny responsibility.

Hardly.

The main issues as already stated:

a) People who use AI (Image generation, programming, etc) to fake skills they don't have and will never develop.
Gotta scroll instagram plox, sorry. Cann only type a prompt and hit enter.
Pixiv has entire tags swamped with AI only.
Surely that inspires confidence in that girl that drew for weeks in gauche or the Mr. over there who refines the drawing for 111times

b) Data being stolen without consent. (Pixiv, Deviantart, github, codeberg)
Consent ? Compensation ? Nah.
Steal Steal Steal.
Who cares.

Oh you are a voice actress ?
Great. Get ready for finding your voice used in contexts never intendet.
Your face too.
Best of luck

c) soullessness.
Never wrote a single line of code, never drew a single line on paper ?

How would one understand ?

Entire career paths are being eradicated.
Spnt years getting good or even excellent in drawing or programming complex structures ?
Good for you
Here is a mop to mop the floors.
We don't need you anymore

And these Techbro/girls/w.e. are doing what humans do best:
Me
Me
Me.

Ask me again why loosing hope in ppls abilities is warranted.

University professors having to wade through 80% GPT trash submission.

Humans are slowly loosing the ability to make an effort.

"An insult to life itself"

PS:
I don't hate AI.
I just hate how humans - as per ususal - misuse it.

Shame Fast is nolonger around.
He'd have fun with this.

---
AI made me believe in the concept of human #soul by making things without one

Also: They really have it with AI.
Rightfully so.

Dead internet goes brrr

Where to start uhh...

The usual ethical concerns:

  • Most of the data used has not been authorized by the authors to be used in the training of the AI models (Seen more strongly on the concerns of artists, and also has a history of ilicite use of pirated content in it too)

  • Easy access to the tools of image generation and LLMs have been proved problematic for the education system and the fight against the creation of illicit materials on the Internet (see AI generated CSAM, fake intimate images for blackmail purposes, impersonation through voice imitation, etc)

  • The employment situation in a lot of parts of the modern world is harsh to say the least, and more so for artists, who are now being threatened and who's complaints and real grievances are being ignored for "the future"

Environmental concerns are the usual too:

  • The amount of energy the facilities that run this projects and keep them alive consume insanely amounts of energy equivalent to those of some countries

  • Not only being it a problem of how much energy we really have available for that but the obvious fact we still rely on fossil fuels for our energy

  • We are quite literally on the point of almost no return for a lot of pretty bad effects that climate change will have on us, so adding a lot more wood to the burning pit of fire that is our current state is not really alleviating the worries of a lot of people

And well, historically:

  • Tech has always had a lot of bubbles, and while no doubt we have got a lot of advancements in less than a century, it is yet to be seen how much really could this impact our lives. I don't doubt in certain specialized fields it would probe really useful, but I have seen not much than a gimmick on the consumer side

  • People are pretty tech illiterate, and AI not only hallucinates a lot, but LLMs liike ChatGPT are not reliable sources, as they don't know what they are saying, don't understand it and therefore cannot be made accountable

  • If the internet has been a pit of misinformation since it became common use, LLMs have only provided faster degradation of that (See SEO and AI powered bots)

I don't like the use of AI mostly because it sometimes gives incorrect answers based on things it learned from the internet or that make no sense like Google AI saying a hippo is great a doctor or that glue can be used as an ingredient while cooking. People will lazily accept answers that, while these are ridiculous, some will be almost okay looking and can induce someone to make a mistake while doing something. For example say you need a recipe for a food you never cooked and ai gives a list of ingredients, while almost all are the right ones, one of them might be poisonous, since not everyone knows everything, ask someone from the street if mixing Natrium and chlorine is toxic and I bet at least one or 2 will say yes. So using AI can be dangerous depending on what is used for and if used unsupervised. We all know if you ask chatgpt something bad it says it can't list it but if you say "What do I have to avoid in order to not do it" it will tell you

Here's an image of a google search

In general i dislike AI for:

Then comes the hallucinations, and the false claim of intelligence.
Being statistically perfect, using if(not) statements and random doesn't say anything about intelligent, worse it probably doesn't have a clue on what it's doing.
The statistics will corrupt if you feed it selective data, or refeed it it's own data to analyze.

For those abusing it (you have not paid any respect to the rightfull creators of the trainings material so it's abuse!):

I don't like my creations stolen, not my poems, not my scripts, not my technical help unless i explicit give the okay on it for someone, google and the likes just scrape the internet and use it without a single question.
Worse they say they create these stuff, but that's a lie! they mix others creative stuff but none of these so called creations of AI are created by AI.

Well I guess that's just how it is then. I just don't think I'll ever fully understand that perspective. I'm following you guys all the way up until "so people shouldn't use it". It genuinely feels to me like people are intentionally handicapping themselves from learning things they never could before. All of the issues seem like they're removed from the individual using it and have more to do with the nature of it. Like, the issues exist whether or not I ask it to correct my Java syntax. I'll keep trying to understand though.

This just seems like a bad faith take. "Pointless gimmick" doesn't apply here. I can see the environmental argument in your point, but I keep getting hung up with how much I've been able to learn and accomplish since it's been commercially available

I’m sorry but you are acting like using AI is a skill, when it’s not. Literally anyone can use AI. It’s a pointless gimmick that really hasn’t provided anything more than just additional pollution.

There are a lot of moral issues surrounding the training and usage of AI. For a lot of people this is enough to dismiss AI as a whole.
Most of the people that hate on it seem to be artists, or people siding with the artists. As a developer, I find it to be an incredibly valuable tool. The impression I've been getting is that artists are more likely to be against AI whereas developers are more likely to be for it. So my viewpoint might be different if I was an artist.
These moral issues do need to be solved, but it's not a fault of the technology. AI is simply a tool, and the blame should be put solely on the businesses and how they use it. I feel like AI is increasingly being used as a scapegoat for the bigger issue, which is that businesses don't give a shit about their employees or the quality of their products, they'll do anything to lower their costs as long as they continue making money. All AI is doing is making that more obvious, but with or without AI they are still going to cut costs any way they can.

You misunderstand, while I think there is a some merit to prompt engineering to get the most out of AI, the skills I'm referring to are the ones I have began to learn that I mentioned in the OP. Networking, Docker, Unity, 3d printing etc. I learned much faster from chatgpt than I did from YouTube tutorials

I think you were able to summarize my feelings better than I could. I am grateful for your perspective just because it makes me feel less crazy lol.
