Try again please, I DM'd you a couple specific things to test, but all should be working this time. I didn't install Win7 to test, but I spoofed my Win version to 7 and confirmed it's working that way so I think all should be good this time

Worst case, rather than disabling your internet, you can force autoupdates to be disabled by adding "Set AUTOUPDATE=off" (without quotes) to ModMii's Support\settings.bat file (create the file if it doesn't exist). But after some fixes I just applied, you shouldn't need to do this.

After updating from an older version to the last version supported by Win 7 things now seem to work and yes that beta got enabled.

I asked u to test 7.0.2 to ensure it would update u to 7.0.3 but no further. If u started with a fresh install of 7.0.3 it will behave the same as if u started on 7.0.2 and updated to 7.0.3

So the issue should be all fixed. Thanks again for reporting!

Eh no unfortunately, that method have me the errors I mentioned before. Although that may have been due to leftovers files or something? I used a different folder for the new install plus upgrade then copy pasted stuff over to the old install to avoid having two different ModMii installs and that worked.

Probably left over stuff (specifically DB.bat in the support folder). If u do a fresh 7.0.3 install now it should work too. I'm very confident all is good now.

Thankfully you reported it quickly, and probably not too many users on win7 would have tried updating in the last few days so they shouldn't need to do a fresh install, it should just work.

Well, any new for emulated Nands or that's only for the versions that need Windows 8.1 and up?

Edit: Also how I fo check for errors the files in the temp folder of ModMii?

Nothing else is new for 7.0.3 other than having access to the latest d2x cios updates available now and going forward

FYI, wii emunands and vWii emunands are interchangeable from a gx perspective (probably not neek though)

Edit; modmii will handle temp folder/file verifications automatically. If it finds a file in its temp folder, it will verify it, and if it fails integrity checks it will get redownloaded

It means users like yourself that are stuck on 7.0.3 because u can't or won't update your windows can still have modmii construct the latest d2x cios. If u want to know the benefits of v11 beta2 u will have to look at its changelog

A portable mode for heavy restricted computers would be nice, so I can then try to make that work in Wine. Because Win 10 loses support in a few months and my laptop is pre 2020 so it is in Windows 11 blocklist so there wouldn't be much point in updating to win 10. Sure I could pay for extended updates for Win 10 but that's just for a year.

Besides that thank you.

While the Homebrew browser crashes all the time is at least useful to check what stuff got updates, so I take note and I update it in the other app instead. Nice that the Gameboy Advance emulatorvM can actually read my USB stick, only that and Nintendont do. The rest is either the sd card or nothing. Well that and my emu nand is on the usb stick, that works fine.

I still have to get my other Wii fixed, if I am lucky is just the fan needing cleaning if I am unlucky the whole Wii disk is mostly dead and that's why it overheats all the time.

I've had ppl report modmii 8.0.0 mostly works in wine except for downloads (both WiiPy and wget downloads), so if u can manage to supply it with a modmii temp folder from a friend's modmii/windows installation or whatever, it might improve the experience.

The same person reported WiiPy in wine wasn't working, and I reported it to NinjaCheetah, but it's low priority since u normally wouldn't use WiiPy.exe outside of windows cuz it has dif releases for other OSs, which totally makes sense. If WiiPy downloads in wine get fixed, and all that's left is wget downloads, then I'd be more keen to look into it. But right now even if I fix/change wget downloads it would still be mostly broken without WiiPy in wine fixed too, so not really worth the effort

Tbh I personally haven't tried modmii in wine and am not actively trying to support that, but if u tinker and have any ideas/solutions that are easily implemented lmk!

In the meantime maybe a virtual machine could be a workaround for u. I do have someone on the team working on a windows live "cd" image that would be bootable from usb that comes with the latest modmii preinstalled, but I don't think it's likely to be ready any time soon. Some other cross platform ideas are being contemplated, unsure if they will come to fruition one day though.

Edit:

on another note, I'll probably be pushing a minor 8.0.1 update with some small changes in a few weeks or so. It will include a bundled version of this new cios when released, a couple small non-critical fixes/improvements (e.g. At the bottom of first post) and other minor changes. I want to wait a bit first and see if anyone reports any issues with 8.0.0.

That being said, when blackb0x releases the new cios I'll make sure modmii supports it immediately even before 8.0.1 is ready

HI @XFlak

what's the technical reason to drop support for Windows 7 and require 8.1? I'm now out of options due to this requirement.

What about Linux's mono? Also dropped?

It's in the changelog, it's mostly due to the switch to using WiiPy which requires it.

U can use a virtual machine to install a newer windows and try that. Or u can use ModMii 7.0.3 which still supports older versions of windows, and is still get d2x cios updates (but nothing else).

In theory I could have a legacy mode built into modmii that doesn't use WiiPy. It's actually already built into modmii 8.0.0 but only for its legacy d2x cios build method (which no one but me will likely use in order to more easily provide cios updates for older builds of modmii). Adding this would likely take many many hours though, and no one should be running an old insecure version of Windows these days anyway. I think the only way I would even consider it is if either many people requested it, or if someone requested it along with a large enough donation to make me feel obligated to investigate it.

Edit: what Linux mono option?

Edit2: btw I've heard modmii 8.0.0 mostly works in wine, everything except downloads, which is pretty important, lol. But if u manually copy over a modmii temp folder from another modmii installation or whatever it should mostly work.

There are a couple other avenues being investigated for cross platform support, but not worth mentioning at this stage until they get further off the ground in case they don't lead anywhere

Do you mean this WiiPy, a Python module, that can be installed with pip? It uses libWiiPy, which is also a Python module.
Excuse me, but I don't see a requirement for a particular Windows version.

U can use a virtual machine to install a newer windows and try that.

To get legally a Windows 10/11 one need to register for a 90 day test VM at Microsoft. Registering is a no-go for me.

Not really you can use Windows 8 or newer with out registering on an NON COMMERCIAL for free, no need to register, but most of the features will be disabled on the GUI.

WiiPy an libWiiPy needs newer libraries which run only on Windows 6.2 or newer.

I've actively been communicating with NinjaCheetah (the dev behind WiiPy) for much of its development. He's made it clear that WiiPy requires Windows 8.1 or higher (aka Win 6.2+)
Post automatically merged:

I'm actually really glad you asked the question, because it got me talking with NinjaCheetah again about this, and it miiiiiight be possible to get WiiPy (and modmii 8.0.0+) working on older versions of Windows like Win7.

Maybe someone with Win7 wants to test the following?

In Support/modmii.bat change this line:
set "WiiPy=Support\wiipy\wiipy.exe"
To this:
Set "WiiPy=python3 YourPathToWiiPy\wiipy.py"

Where YourPathToWiiPy needs to be changed based on where u have it on your PC

Then, before running modmii install one of these forks of Python 3.11 or higher (3.10 may also work?) https://github.com/adang1345/PythonWin7

And make sure you have all of the other dependencies met from here https://github.com/NinjaCheetah/WiiPy/tree/main#requirements

After doing this and running modmii it will still warn you that some features won't work properly, but ignore it, and try anything involving WiiPy, like downloading an IOS from download page 1 or something. Then let us know how it went!

This all being said, NinjaCheetah and I aren't sure of how stable or usable it may be. Newer Python versions may have actually introduced some real incompatibilities, so your mileage may vary. We also don’t know if libWiiPy’s dependencies would work properly under these modified Python versions

Well, installing the requirements failed for nuitka

While it succeeded to download nuitka, it failed for its dependencies. Retried it serveral times. I'm out of ideas.

I did edit the batch file as suggested.

ModMii Classic does not start at all, while ModMiiSkin gives me "Some downloads are invalid, Missing.....".
I don't see any entries in my proxy log for downloading files, but I see the version test of ModMii. So it should use my proxy to connect to the internet.

Are u running 32bit windows? If so, try running modmii.bat directly, it should automatically replace modmii.exe with a 32bit compatible version

Edit: and skin has no chance of working (even if it loads) if classic doesn't work
