One character had even been made up before in order to test a scholar in Tang dynasty times

Well to be fair there's 85,000 of them and there's only so many combinations of lines and squiggles you can make before you either start repeating them or end up with a page-sized character that looks like this.

I'm reminded of this video for some reason, it's about Japanese kanji but that's close enough.

Kanji is just the Japanese pronunciation of Hanzi (and Koreans say Hanja)

漢字

It means Han characters - so even the Japanese name is literally meaning "Chinese characters"

Buuuuuut, he is just giving a ballpark

There is a reason they are called CJKV characters since they are all, for the most part, one entity

(An important distinction is Vietnamese characters which were often only used in Vietnamese and made up of radicals often to form 3 element characters)

Newer words created in modern times are sometimes different however and only existent in one particular region

An example is

Chinese 咖啡 (traditional and simplified)
Japanese 珈琲

A rare example of the Japanese not being the same as Chinese traditional, simplified or a Japanese simplification
