Yes, it looks like advisors warned Gustavo Petro to not undermine nor mess with the US, so it could affect Petro's election next year. There are a lot of Colombians are living in the US.I think it may have been the threat of retaliatory tariffs that scared the government as much as anything, Colombia imports a ton of petroleum products from the US.
However, outlook is not good for the US and if the US decide go hardball, so it could end up being counterproductive, and it will affect all future admins. That is kinda like Biden have to deal with China after frosty relationship under first term of Trump Admin.
As for me, I prefer to force the Congress to resolve the issue with immigration, so they are responsible for fix the laws if it is not executed well. The US immigration law has been broken for many decades, also last major revision was in 1980s.
