The nightmare of game publishers, game corporations and gamers in Vietnam is finally coming!
Decree 147/2024/NĐ-CP of the Vietnamese government is about to take effect!
Now you will not be able to play games for hours like before, now, any player under 18 years old will only be able to play one game for no more than 60 minutes a day / cannot play more than 3 different games in a day, meaning you only have a maximum of 180 minutes for 3 games / day. Now the exchange and sale of virtual items in games is completely prohibited, games that are gambling in nature, no matter how small, will be BANNED, online game stores / games of foreign publishers / if they want to do business, they must set up servers in Vietnam and comply with Vietnamese law, public Internet centers are only allowed to open from 9am to 10pm instead of freely as before.

Typical cases of game stores / electronic games / game publishers / ... will be quite heavily affected after this decree takes effect on Christmas Day this year (December 25):
Game corporations:
Nintendo.
Sony.
etc.

Game stores:
Nintendo eShop.
PlayStation Store.
Steam (has been put on the scoreboard by the Vietnamese government since June).
etc...
Game developer:
111 Dots Studio/Garena: with the extremely popular video games Free Fire and Free Fire MAX.
VNG Game: the publisher of PUBG Mobile in Vietnam.
The Pokemon Company / Niantic, Inc / DeNA Co., Ltd: you can see clearly by looking at the three games Pokemon TCG Pocket, Pokemon Go and Pokemon Masters EX. Pokemon Masters EX will terminate its service in Vietnam on December 25, 2024, the day Decree 147/2024/NĐ-CP officially takes effect. Pokemon TCG Pocket cannot be released in Vietnam because it contains several elements that will violate Decree 147/2024/NĐ-CP:
1/ Cards, an element related to gambling.
2/ Virtual item exchange.
Pokemon GO:
not paying taxes + no server in Vietnam.
etc.

I wished that the sale of virtual items in games would be banned, Vietnam is contributing to making games feel more complete and such, and in terms of people under 18 having limited playtime with video games, I honestly think that's for the better. I think this is great because while I do think these limited minutes of game time are horrible especially since it doesn't increase the older you get, it prevents people from becoming too invested into video games, and it's just nothing but a distraction to them at the end of day. Yeah this is a controversial take, but it has to do with how games are becoming a lot more.. Poorly made, and how companies would make the game better by making people pay for more. Look at Sun Haven for instance: The game is nothing but the DLC makes the game much better! You're paying HUNDEREDS of dollars for a simple fucking farming simulator, when they could have a lot more time to make the game feel more complete.

Wow that's awful! Must be something like become more very strict rules and laws from government that changed too much.

Only very bad like violence / violent games (Mature and Adult) like shooter, murder, kill, drugs, etc (include xxx, rape) should must banned. Want to know why? Because many teens and some kids are ignore "Adult only" for video games then play bad games and learn many bad things from and put risk to their life to all schools, college, church, etc to harm people something like that. Compare to ISIS and other terrorist like that what kids and teens are planning do like similar in illegal way to hurt or/and kill random people in different places know as mental illness.

There is another decree issued by the Ministry of Information and Communications of Vietnam, this decree comes with many provisions to ensure and support the development of the video game industry in Vietnam and remove some bottlenecks in the previous legal system, combined with the other decree 147/NĐ-CP, what will be the result?!

Good luck enforcing that. Sure outside one's house might be enforceable, but even there how many of the police force will be diverged to keep tabs on the kids?

I do not doubt that people will try to bypass this law. I think we should look at the bigger picture. While Vietnam certainly faces challenges in the gaming industry, we shouldn't forget about the different approaches to regulating this market in other countries. For example, the gaming industry in New Zealand is developing quite successfully, as evidenced you can try now this resource. Perhaps it's worth studying the experience of this country and seeing what practices can be adapted to the Vietnamese realities. After all, there are positive examples that can inspire change.

Also, why do regulators keep forgetting it is the responsibility of parents to enforce a sane schedule? What's wrong with educating parents about good parenting?
