The game modification site ROMhacking.net, home to nearly 20 years worth of ROM hacks and community projects, has decided to close its doors as of August 1st, 2024. This sudden change comes after an increase in bot activity, content takedowns, and hostility with those involved with the site's operations and ownership.

The website's database, including all ROM hacks and other content uploaded to the site, has been preserved on archive.org. In addition, the site will remain up in a read-only state.

Great news I'm just afraid some corporation will try to destroy IA because of all the copyrighted material they have and that can be seen as piracy.

As far as I know, the RHDN website is set to read-only, but the forums are still active.

Surprisingly, they're relatively active but the rest remains read-only as Jayro said. Either they decided not to shutdown the website, as it could damage the reputation of their regular visitors, or, they must've have swapped owners.

Submissions (and updates to them) are still permanently closed, although there are some that still hang around the forums to give updates to progress to their projects. I want to know the latest site everyone is using for their projects now because the rom hacking scene to me now seems to be dormant than ever.

I see the main reasons for that are wordpress criticism and some romhacking.net drama with the creator of the fastrom hacks

WordPress lacks any form of good security when it comes to user-made plugins. Over the span of years, there have been malicious plugins designed to steal crypto wallets, show fake captchas bundled with stealers, and compromise accounts. The CEO hasn't done anything about it, he's been in many scandals.
