ROMhacking.net shuts down after nearly 20 years

The game modification site ROMhacking.net, home to nearly 20 years worth of ROM hacks and community projects, has decided to close its doors as of August 1st, 2024. This sudden change comes after an increase in bot activity, content takedowns, and hostility with those involved with the site's operations and ownership.

The website's database, including all ROM hacks and other content uploaded to the site, has been preserved on archive.org. In addition, the site will remain up in a read-only state.

came out of lurking specifically to say you're a piece of shit for making fun of near's pronouns after they committed suicide specifically due to harassment from scum like you

moving on from that, it's a real damn shame the owner had to quit the site like that. i've seen multiple notable figures in the community corroborate that this situation was an overreaction on the owner's end, but i'd still take it with a grain of salt. 2024 has really sucked for rom preservation
yeah, people like this took Near from us, they took RHDN from us, what else are they going to take? can't they just stop being weirdos for five seconds?

Also the language the owner is using is a huge red flag: "They dehumanized me", "They were hateful and mean."...guess which group of mentally ill people usually talk like this.
you sound like a bully for making fun of people for having normal reactions to awful dehumanizing treatment

What if GBAtemp.net goes down?

I don't even want to think about it, but for some reason, this response alone has generated a bunch of actual reasons why I could see this site being shut down in the future. However, I don't want to assume that any of those reasons are going to happen anytime soon.

Although seeing Romhacking.net no longer adding new content is depressing, I guess that's just another grave being put for the many more to come in the future.

What a shame, I hope this is only temporary or that some other entity will take its place, this kind of service is much needed for many gamers...

Thank you Nintendo, I really appreciate you ensuring everything gets taken down given enough time, meaning that hosting anything is a revolving door of websites of differing quality, and making me paranoid about linking to anything, or even mentioning names of websites, as Nintendo Ninjas could be anywhere.

I'm really bummed about losing this site, as I finally got a romhack uploaded to there, as well as contributed to the Link's Awakening DX Redux project. I also liked keeping tabs on WIP stuff.

what is that supposed to mean.
Means that he's likely a shit human being, just ignore him.

internet archive is a ticking time bomb. glad romhacks is still around at least
Yes, there's so much copyrighted material I'm surprised the website remains intact, but am glad.

Sad to see Romhacking shutting its doors

YES!!! FINALLY!!! This goddamn site finally got what it deserved! I am so happy right now!
You're happy a website where loads of people put immense work into is closing down? What...

So this goes deeper than simply sabotage. The owner of RHDN was a complete and utter idiot is about the short of it.

Review that thread for the info, but tl;dr: NIghtcrawler (the owner) absolutely refused to do anything that would actually help, and actively worked towards trying to destroy the site.

That hit me like a goddamn brick.
I've been using it for a long time and I had no idea there were drama going on behind the scenes.

man this is complete shit. there is so much fun to be had in customization and mods.

they dont want people replaying old stuff though. they want you to buy buy buy and consume only new stuff.

if u arent spending then you are worthless to video game community i guess. thats the statement these corporate shitards are making.

I can't believe it. I went to that site every single day checking for new releases.

At least there's one member of GBAtemp that must be happy... :glare::rofl2: (edit : I hadn't read all the thread !)

Yeah, because I F***ING hated that site since I've been around there!

Plus, my signature already speaks for itself.
I'm not sure I've ever seen someone as self-centered as you online.

I love it when publishers take down mods and overhauls right before releasing a new version of the game (and unlisting the old one obviously). The time Rockstar/Take 2 did that with GTA, they managed to stoop lower than Nintendo.
