Do you want all those frames or do you want the most immersive, eye watering, mind bending, advanced graphics tech possible? The age old question that can divide gamers.

And as consoles and TVs advance in tech, a lot more developers are giving the users the option; something which wasn't so common in the sixth and seventh generations of consoles.

A high frame rate can sometimes give players an advantage especially in multiplayer games such as first-person shooters or racing games. The higher the frame rate, the smoother and more responsive the game is due to reduced input lag, which can give players a competitive edge. Additionally, a high frame rate can reduce motion blur, making it easier for players to keep track of fast-moving objects on screen.

On the other hand, better visual fidelity can make a game more immersive and show off your next gen hardware with features such as ray-tracing, higher quality textures and more elaborate character models. This may make more sense in slower paced, story focused games where a sense of presence is more important than high frame rates.

So, which do you prefer - a high frame rate or better visual fidelity? Do you prioritize smooth, responsive gameplay, or do you want a game that looks as realistic and visually impressive as possible?

i haven't had to make this kind of a trade-off in a long time, but when i do(like when i play around with old/outdated hardware) i prioritize framerate

there's also a lot of situations where ironically trying to go for a better framerate also gives you a better looking game, like when you disable DOF, all forms of AA, motion blur and all that post processing garbage

going for a higher framerate just in general feels better, lower response times makes games feel less floaty and more responsive

The only thing I really care about is a stable framerate.
I don't mind jaggies nor do I care if the game runs at 30-5 fps. (looking at you San Andreas....)

without silentpatch san andreas actually runs at a capped 26fps lol, silentpatch caps it to 30, framerate vigilante lets you use 60 without the physics breaking as much

4k benefits RTS games and games where I am a sniper actually operating at distance. Could see it also working for a massively complicated game where you benefit from a lot of options on screen (think video editor or 3d modelling program with lots of tools) or need for hyper detailed maps (schematics on 4k screens can be wonderful) but have yet to see a practical example.

Frame rates beyond 60 (possibly even 30 if motion blur gets good) are mostly a concern for VR and unfortunates that get seasick in them.

It was noted that the move to high definition caused more troubles for porn make up artists as it revealed every imperfection that was otherwise hidden by low resolution.
I believe you are about the same age as me, and if you really are, you should remember how magazines were important to our generation. Those were extremely high quality prints, I don't know if a monitor already reached that level of detail, and yet, magazines are dead. So movement is everything and the lack of detail of the low resolution maybe even help boosting the player's imagination as you said.

I do remember hedge porn.

That said dead tree pornography does still exist, however it is very hard to compete with free, as all the videography companies found out about the time webcams, phones and handheld cameras got good enough to be useful. To that end I might have to question things.

No hardlines. In a turned based game, FPS is not everything, and a fighting game w/o 60 fps is no fighting game at all.

But both is superior, yes, definitely both.
