The real story here is people just don't want to work anymore

As seen below the labor force has for the most part continued to increase, but the number of those people actually working (participation) has decreased quite a bit over the past few years

Holy fuck those axes are atrocious. The Y axis doesn't start at zero but the skip isn't indicated, X axes don't align, why the hell is one data point from 1979 being compared to one from 1997, wut. It's like that "average female height" graph:

Anyway, "labor force participation" is the percentage of all people over the age of 16 that are working or looking for work; I quote: "The labor force participation rate is calculated as: (Labor Force ÷ Civilian Noninstitutional Population) x 100."
The statistic doesn't include an upper limit or take retirement age into account, it's not an indicator of "willingness to work", it's just a number. And the biggest, largest, yugest contributor to the decline was baby boomers reaching retirement and leaving the workforce.


tl;dr: people don't want to work any more, and those people are boomers.
