WTFC - Welcome to Finnish Customs

Now, this is a story of me going to have make first time customs declarations in Finland.

Now, as you may be aware, or may not be (then you are now); Finland has quite strict customs, and laws about it. It is not a problem most of time, firstly it only goes for anything that comes OUTSIDE of European union, and second it is completely random what packets they pick up for declaration.

In this case, it is a Anime Figurine, and even better, it is not for me - It is ones my friend ordered through me, because number two that sucks in Finland, is very limited amount of banks supporting online payments - half of "Visa Electron" cards do not support online transactions, (when marketing says they all SHOULD) - my bank and card is a rare one - they DO support it, while my friend's does not. :teach:

Because hobbylink japan does not give me option to charge from my card and send it to different address, everything he orders through me still come first to my address. To this date, I have had to make 15 minute walk to nearest post office when anything arrived, and call my friend to pick up his shite from my place. (incidentally, everything I ever ordered from DealExtreme is even better, they have fit to my post box, what a joy)

Well, this time instead of normal "Large Sized letter" note to post box, i get this note inside a plastic cover with stamp from customs, and immediately was going "uh oh" - after pondering this postal declaration and having the customs stamp, I concluded that I need to go to the customs noted in stamp, what was in harbor, granted only 15 minutes with bus and small walk (in the end) but still bit more pain to get to.

Real kicker was fact that it was only open on weekdays from 8am to 16:15pm - Now that is quite a timeframe, even considering that I am on vacation, I get up about 11am.

So, I had called my friend over, we were getting ready, I needed to get my Passport (only valid ID I have at moment), The receipt that I needed to print out for "just in case", the note I got from postal office, and also my friend had some amount of cash because I was thinking there was some Tax to pay for (since customs page said that anything over worth of >10€ can be written as taxable)

We make our small crusade to harbor, stopping near the place, walking to this industrial area where we FINALLY faced the Customs' place.

We go inside, and first thing is face a machine to print your queue number... oh boy, I pick up the "post packets" one, and see I am 217 on line. I also accidentally pressed other one what was not right thing for that and it was number 512. I was weirded out - as I soon learned, the freakin' customs had different number for every different kind of service, while they flashed 500+ numbers for Service place 6, the Place 9 what was meant for postal checks (you know, one I needed to declare) is deserted.

There seems to be only one person taking in other matters, while there is almost no one around doing the other stuff. People are just sitting and waiting... for a LONG time to add. Finally it seems that import/export matters get cleared away, so the older woman doing the stuff at place 6 goes outside, takes long smoke or whatever, is outside for notably long time anyway, comes back inside, and finally presses the button for someone to get finally get their postal pack.

Long story shortened, Two guys before me, there was another person who entered the reception table (totals of two now taking in customers) - and I got this grumpy old guy.

As I showed my note, the guy only said "let's go get it them" - in grumpy manner to add, nothing sort of positive tone in his voice, we go into hallway behind the reception desks, and from there to a storage room full of packets, and one desk with a packet opening knife and other stuff.

The guy takes my note, checks it, goes over to one wooden shelf, and points at one pack, what is already familiar to me. He points me to come and pick it up, and place it on the desk in same room.

He goes through stuff, first asking me "what's inside?" - First bone in my throat "Well, A plastic figure, toy-like" I answer "and it resembles Human?" "yes, sort of" I answer.
So He asks is there a price receipt for it, I show the e-mail I printed, he check it and is like "6,800?" I was "in japanese yen" - He the comes back "What is it about in euros?" In this part, voice inside my head yelled "YOU ARE THE FREAKIN' CUSTOMS GUY" and my mouth said "well..." *I start to take out my iPod touch and booting convertor app* "Well it is about 50 euros"

The the guy is "ok, just open it then" and now I am going "oh my..." inside head as I open the pack.

HPIM1725.JPG

That is what the guy was now looking at, and to say least, I was little "going inside my shell" - It was a bit embarrassing to say least.

Then the guy goes "well, it seems it's really nothing valuable enough so I am just going to write it off and thats it" Me who was expecting something of 60 euros in value to be noted as 20 euros of tax at least was "And thats it?" - So I gave my old name under the paper, guy took it, and let me take my (Friend's) packet outside the room, back to the lobby where my friend was waiting, and as I hand over the packet I go about how freakin' embarrassing the whole ordeal was.

So, long story short, I am quite Happy I do not need to make these trips to customs much, since they really do take only few random packets. The pictures was taken back in my place to show the thing and two.

So, that is how customs in Finland, I hope NOBODY ELSE here needs to stand same kind of stuff.

Well, I do not have one...
Or, my sisters are away, and well... yeah

In end it was not that bad, but took some time. Plus the Customs service person had that much decency to not ask around, he only checked what it had, and concluded it not to be worth taxing for (after all, that comes in more on import of electronics and such)

Customs are also pretty gay here.

Bribing the worker like 10$ USD can get all your problems solved (depending of the size of the "thing")

the bigger something is, the more you have to fucking cash out

this government is so fucked up, i hate doing it, but if i don't i would simply never ever get anywhere if i do it "legally"

so yeah i sort of feel for you here.

Honestly, if you're embarrassed about people seeing you own something girly, why do you buy it at all?

Especially something as fucking useless as a figurine?

Did you even read the damn topic? He bought it for a FRIEND...Not himself. And did you ever stop to think that some people like collecting figurines, or comics, or whatever the hell they want to?

Also, you're complaining about useless things, when you keep posting stupid topics that eventually get locked because they are so idiotic. We don't need, nor want members like you (I know you're an older member, but with a different account, but that doesn't mean you should post dumb stuff).

Speaking of "customs" (and "gay"), I had a similar adventure. A friend of mine and I ordered some sets from Hobby Link Japan (there was some clearance sale or something, they were really cheap). The first time around, we took the cheapest shipping. It never arrived. I was supposed to receive a notice when it came to the local post office, to come pick it up. I never got the notice. HLJ got it back with a note saying "recipient never claimed the package".

That kind of pissed me off. Then we decided to get the best, fastest, most expensive shipping option, where the postman will bring it to your door, and return the next day if you're not home, and take your signature and retina scan and a DNA sample to ensure the person getting the packet is really you. It arrived pretty fast, and got held up at customs. I had to come there with a receipt showing the actual price, and a list of contents.

We waited for quite a while before being called into the office. The guy gave us a look and asked if we were together (since you go in one at a time), to which my friend hastily replied "No, we're just good friends." This earned us a Look from the guy, and roaring laughter from the elderly lady who was working in the same office, across the desk from him. I think she liked us.

So I gave the guy a receipt, which he scrutinized for around five minutes, most of which he spent mumbling that the package had a higher price tag on the declaration and that there are special tarifs for exotic items and whatnot. The lady had already brought the package in, and I saw this clearly wasn't so, the prices matched. But he wouldn't let go of his "oh I'm so gracious and only charging you the law-defined percentage and not some arbitrary administrative costs because I want to be done with you as soon as possible" schtik, so we had to stand there through the whole charade. We ended up paying $30.

Moral of the story? I dunno, maybe "don't order stuff unless you can afford all the extra cost"? Something like that. "Never forget the shipping will probably come out to $30 and your local postman can't be arsed to actually care about your mail so be prepared to pay the shipping twice" or something. Meh.

This has been a public service cool story.

...What? Why would anyone do that? To be cool (Or whatever other reason you can think of)?

On a side note, I thought the topic was going to be about, you know, customs. Traditions and stuff. Not import tax.

Do a thread on Finnish customs next. ^_^

I loved the fact that someone who plays visual novels tries to troll me for collecting figurines, where we are on site playing handheld games. My freaking mother hates DS more than figurines.

I will have brief follow up stories if any of my DS stuff get caughts, good thing the "backup device and such" flies here.

I don't get any bad reaction from my peers and colleagues for collecting figurines (most don't even mind it), however if I ever have to go to the post office to pick one up alone without a female with me, I sometimes feel embarrassed and get slightly nervous when entering which doesn't happen when I import games, even with the special edition of Love Plus which really surprised me. I think the embarrassment is more of a fear response some have and it doesn't always go away when facing customs or picking it up at the post office.

No, because I'm an attention whore who enjoys making people wonder why a thread is locked.

Visual novels = books + pictures. And how was I attempting to troll you for collecting figurines? I don't understand why someone would collect anything without being proud of it.

Well, Firstly Only about as fucking obscure action as collecting figurines would be reading visual novels.

Also, I do not understand someone who cannot read. This case it was my FRIEND'S (pointed out now TWICE) - and mostly it also is because my friend has a bit different taste than I myself. And in case of THIS particular figurine (what I knew to be fetching) I already was going "why that one"

I would been half better getting figurine what was mine from the customs. It would been something half normal or in best case the HUGE (GUTS) Hatsune Miku.

Oh, and you already said that figurines are fucking useless and now you did not say that, you so drugged Beatrice... (Oh, by the way I am not gonna fight anything there, even I know that fgurines are fucking useless - just pretty looking and awesome to keep on self.)

I reckon you'd be fine and get it through unless it said "R4 Flashcart" on the invoice (since R4s are the best known ones)

lol - well they DO sell flashcarts in few finnish stores too... and they RECOMMEND R4, so i am not bound to buy from them much... but they can even get away with a ACTUAL walk in store where you can get your shit and get out.

I just buy from outside since they sell about two kinds of flashcarts, other is R4 (probably a real one though) and M3i Zero... both cost about 20 euros more than when ordered outside.
