The BIG PS2 blogpost

Alright, I have discussed about my PS2 questions and other stuff throughout last month, but not really gave anything solid on this all.

And, to give other news, my GPU (That is "Graphic processing Unit" or "Graphox card" for commoners) Died. Boom, does not respond, is like a ghost, nonexisting to my motherboard anymore - it's gone! So, when PC gaming dies... Reason for PS2 (and, DS, A little) gaming rises.

So, meanwhile this, I already spent 35 hours with Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 - What is fucking awesome game. I have been spoiled who the culprit is, I have been spoiled or hinted all other things - and even with this list of downfalls I just keep on trucking it with coach train.

So, my PS2 setup Itself.

It took few weeks, but I got good, moderately large TV for myself with PS2. Playing with it has been way more awesome than a very small TV I first had.

Got a nice picture of it with bootup logo:

I first tried using DVD's with my PS2 but those had most varied success rate ever - the bad quality cheap DVD's basically had random change of just stopping - PS2 just would stop reading in random part of playing game, and this could even be foreseen by initial sounds PS2 made when reading the DVD. Then there were games that just did not work.

THEN I tried with Sony branded quality DVD's - Games Like Katamari Damacy worked with them unlike with the cheapo ones. But then there still were games like Odin Sphere and Okami that still kept halting in reading the DVD randomly, even with the quality DVD's.

I went on big quest through many ordeals, Basically as suggested; Getting my hands on a Network Adapter, and A hard drive.
Network adapter was first, and kinda weird: I went on Gamestop, spotting some used games, and while at it, I asked "Hey, would there be Network adapters for Old PS2" - Answer was "not in store" but then a Shop clerk was "BUT, I have one of my own I could just sell, I do not need it" And I was right away in luck - longer story shorter; Inside a week I fetched the Network adapter, and paid 4 times the original asked price. It was a good deal still, and well worth it.

A hard drive was acquired from friend. Thanks to him.

Final setup was working and most awesome:

Dem games. Them all games. Some are even legal copies - In Finland A Copy of Media from friend is legal, not phrasing it much but basically "casual Piracy" is legal, In limited numbers and only for good close friend.

Still, one game surprassed my dirty tricks: Silent Hill 2 (My favorite game, and one I wanted to play on PS2 instead of PC the most) - It would not just boot, almost what ever I try. Even the HDloader in end does not boot the game even if I got the real copy already. For some magical reason I need to disable my mod chip, and then Silent Hill 2 will boot (the real copy, of course) - So it was from my part 30€ well spent (but it hurts, so much for SO old PS2 game)

I also spent some time setting up my uLaunchELF - since I am LITTLE (not much) concerned or my DVD reader, I did go through small trouble to get uLaunchELF on my Memory card, making it possible to boot straight to uLaunch on bootup if needed (by pressing R1) - It took few resized images and options to modify, but in end all went together, Now I have well visible, nice background that still shows well under all the menu and browser elements. And my home screen has all links for what I need (emulators and of course; HDloader)

So, game wise I've been into Persona 4 the most for now. I am ready to play Persona 3 as well - AND EVEN both Persona 2 parts (Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment) - I went a way to get some good quality CD's... Even though I have HDloader, it does not help with some PS1 titles I cannot buy, cannot loan, cannot get hands on - with those I need good ol' CD-R's and some... acquiring.

The list can show some other stuff of my radar - but at moment I am having very enriched Missed Generation of gaming (I never had PS2 before that, I may have mentioned that) ... And rest in heaven, Soul of my GPU, I goddamn DO miss TF2 and L4D2 sessions with friends, even how much I can play P4, it hurts...

Until next time bretherin!

P.S: While talking about Persona 4, and if you WERE WONDERING OF MY AVATAR AND SIGNATURE - Could not this too; I found out awesome (BUT; SPOILER INFESTED!) Persona 4 fancomic by "Hiimdaisy" - If you have played the game already or do not care, and are searching for some very good laughs, go ahead and have them a look. I laughed A LOT. Also disclaimer; As the page says, It is fine to use parts of these comics for internet usage, say Avatars and signatures, and now I have even credited the original maker. All good in this earth, YAY!

I wish my PS2 still worked. I had it for about six years using a shitty alba television from 1993. Hence I didn't really get to appreciate the graphics becasue I use my PS1 cable to connectthe console to the TV.

Now I have a 24 HD inch TV. I want to play PS2 on it.

Well, I use my PS1 cable too (Or, isn't it same as PS2 default RCA anyway?) since I got my PS2 without box from friend, they had no extra cables (nor controllers, ONE extra Memory Card though) and I had to get a Power cable, a TV cable (PS1 as said, RCA) and controllers from my end. Plus the other extra stuff I talked about (minus mod chip, they had it modded but never used it for anything anyway)

I have no HDTV lust, but bigger is better (The first TV I had was roughly 1/4 of size the TV I have now in use)

Well I also have a PS2 and a full HD 32" tv, and I think it's a bit too much for a PS2 because the quality is just to low.

I'd just like to play PS2 on teh big screen becasue the time I had mine, I was using a shitty television. I'm not too disapointed though considering I've got a HD console.

That I can relate with.

And with HD - dunno, HD TV would be overhot, but the smaller Crap TV i first used had REALLY BAD sound quality from it's speakers, AND the image quality in even analog standard was really bad, if you Had, say, white letter in black background, the white would overlap to black part, making a long white "shadow" through whole screen from the letter to right border - and those would be apparent every now and then. It was BAD.

So, that Nokia, he serves me, he is awesome, and he is not gonna give me up. :yay:

I was going to read it all then I saw
What of my friend's copy of Final Fantasy VII?

I can play that too on my PS2 when I so decide.

man I have one of those network adaptors and was thinking about setting up the hd loader, pretty sure it and the port on the back of the PS2 is broken though :/

could pick up a used phat for cheap but the problem is getting a working network adaptor these days :/

sucks because I really want to play xenosaga and I can't swap magic with DVD9s

Don't bother Xenosaga was tedious....plus Xenosaga 2 doesn't work on HDL so you're screwed if you're trying to preserve your lens. After the first two i got bored so whilst i have the third i expect it'll sit there gathering dust.

Silent Hill 2 should work fine on HDL. Does it boot from the HDD with the chip disabled?

I could probably find the second game cheap, or just swap magic it since its 2 dvds and not a dvd9 like the first game

My lens will probably die soon anyway so it wouldn't be a bad idea to set HDL up, I guess I'll just have to test the network adaptor and hope it works fine.
Nokia makes TV?!!
Yes, at least in Finland there is many Nokia branded products, other than cell phones. Digiboxes (digital TV tuners, US has similar, but not same ... T-vo?) so on, i think mp3 players, but i may be just wrong... You'd be surprised to know that nokia originally made rubber rain boots and car tires; And still do! Their cell phone business just is bigger.

mybrainisfulloffuck
in my case i kinda need the mod chip enabled to boot HDloader... It just seems that either a really old antipiracy - OR some unique programming quirk picks up with my modchip - if my mod chip is enabled copied dvd, real copy, or HDloader image (of multiple versions, greatest hits us, original US, original PAL) will not boot... Oh, 2 times of 35 tries, they have booted, it is too random.

And frankly i still am ok, SH2 was great game enough to pay 30€ for brand new copy, i already bought it, reason it is not on images is because i lent it to friend while I use my time with Persona 4. And my laser IS 100% functional still...

Also LAW, before you hunt new hardware, just test yours. If i did not read wrong, you have a network adapter and fat ps2? Unless they have clearly bent or anything, i think that you are THINKING that the connector is broken because the adapter and connector on ps2 do not snap or anything - when in reality that is normal: neither does mine, they just slide together and make connection like hands in high five, that is why you need to screw the adapter to your ps2 with coin or something.

Best way to see is the hardware functional is to connect and screw network adapter, connect ethernet cable from router to network adapter, bootup ps2 and see does the "link" light lit up (in solid green, atleast in my case)

Also, I personally thought that for ps2 game xenosaga looks pretty effin awesome. Too bad that multidisc games do not work... But, if you haven't - do it for persona 3 amd 4 - awesome cool games.

speaking of which i never got xenosaga 2 and 3
wont be getting it soon after seeing the prices
same goes for the first dot hack games, only have the first one and never got the other 3
