What do you think about Mario's 3D games?

What do you think about the main Mario 3D games?

I'm talking about:

  • Super Mario 64
  • Super Mario Sunshine
  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2
  • Super Mario 3D Land
  • Super Mario 3D World
I've heard and read a lot of opinions about the games. Some say "they're so repetitive, why they keep releasing Mario games?". I say each of them is unique and has a very different (similar in some ocassions) experience of gameplay to what others had. I have enjoyed each of those games, and completed all of them to the 100%. I'm basing my opinion on my own experience with them.

I was talking with this acquaintance of mine today. And he bashed out every new Mario game out there. "Nintendo should create new and unique IPs (intellectual properties) insted of releasing the same plumber every f***ing year". As obviously his opinion was biased since we don't get a new Mario game very year (talking about the main 3D games of course), I thought of asking here your opinions.

What do you think of Mario 3D games? Are they so repetitive and boring by now?

Comments

All of them are great, but the ones with 3d in the name aren't as good. Sunshine and galaxy were my childhood (the latter being my 3rd favorite game of all time), and I actually finished 100% galaxy (not two) two days ago and am stuck on the daredevil grand finale of the second one.
That said, they certainly aren't repetitive and boring as an entity. However, 3d Land and World don't have that same magic to me. The games themselves have become slightly repetitive, but the series as a whole is always changing in an attempt to improve, which I respect. That said,
SUPER MARIO SUNSHINE GALAXY 364 PLZ NINTENDO!!! :whip::P

That's a good comment!

I've always thought every Mario game is great (yeah, even the New. Super Mario series, but I dont' ask about them because I know nearly everyone hates them). Even though I enjoy other games, other genres and other consoles as well. Every new Mario game released is a new and unique experience for me.

It's not because of my chilhood memories. It's because I genuinely like them. I could be playing Bioshock, The Last of Us or Battlefield today, and tomorrow the brand new released Mario, because I'm nearly sure it will be a great game. Of course, I'm not a complete fanboy and say they are perfect, but they give me different and unique experiences that I really like.

I think they're mostly masterpieces. Few games have better music, atmosphere, and all around character as Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy.

Super Mario 64: 6/10 It was pretty fun, but it started to feel repetitive after a while.
Super Mario Sunshine: ?/10 It looks really dumb tbh.
Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2: 9/10 Overall amazing games, with even more amazing OSTs.
Super Mario 3D Land: 7/10 It was pretty fun, but nothing special.
Super Mario 3D World: 7/10 Same goes for 3D World.

@GalladeGuy Okay, I respected you until I saw your comment! (Not really, I'm just messing)
But seriously, you have Super Mario 64 a 6/10?! I can understand the game becoming a bit repetitive, but the over all plot to the game cannot be beaten! And do NOT get me started on Sunshine! DAMN that game was my childhood! The plot is not dumb, and is incredibly amazing! At least watch a good youtuber play it? To really get the feel of how AMAZING Sunshine is, you MUST play it! I don't care if it's on an emulator on it, you need to play it!

I think sm64 was revolutionary, sunshine too but kind of missed the place for more inovation(I don't know why but that didn't felt as original and fun to play) and the super Mario galaxy franchise was an absolute masterpiece.
About super Mario 3d land and world, I'll be honest, they are innovative but they just felt uninspired and repetitive.

@Adamant Lugia Yeah. Playing Sunshine to the 100% was harder than 64 for me. And it really feels good to play every stage and discover every secret in it.

for some reason, mario games never hook me enough for me to actually finish them. i've beaten one mario game in my life--nsmbwii.

that said, sunshine and galaxy 1 probably tie for my favorite 3d iteration.

I should be more constructive with my statement.
Supe mario 64 super mario sunshine, super mario galaxy i have to say i did not like.

(How can you dislike a game you did not play)
LET ME EXPLAIN
Super mario 64 is a fun game to play, but i hate it cause to get perfect game required 120 stars, how do you get the stars by doing random mission objectives, some were fun, but the red coins, and 100 coins = star was not fun. Is more fun to play around than actually try and get the stars.

super mario sunshine was more fun, the fludd was cool novelty and so was yoshi, I like the wall slide and spin jumps, but again my hate was the 120 shine sprites, its even worst on how to get them this time, there blue coins you have to get now and each shine sprite required 10 each, so NOPE! There some you had to get by finding and spraying grifiti on walls to make them appear, and finding things is never easy, also you had to put these fruits in baskets to get some as well not to mention that one fruit you can't pick up, so you had to kick it around. Again more fun to just play around with fludd and yoshi.

Super mario galaxy is known as great by many. why? well i dunno, for one i never played it, but how do you play it? With the wii mote and nunchuck, why? Why couldn't i use a standard controller like gamecube or classic controller? Maybe i am not giving it enough credit, okay how bout this?

I just finish explaining why i didn't like the other two games, well this one also added the same thing, COLLECT STARS. Not only are there huge green galaxy stars but star bits? To me i think the trend of collecting stuff is not fun, unless done right, some may not be easy to find, could take years before anyone find it all or just give up. I had hoped for a 3ds port with more common controls, i would play it but again, is my opinion.

Super mario 3d land (As i type this my face smile with glee to get to this part) Is more or less, A degraded version of super mario galaxy game, it has just about all the stuff with the game except for some power ups and yoshi but it looks and feel like it. Some stages you go sky high, and such is fun to look at, Also TANOOKI!!!

Sure there those green stars to collect, but there is only 3 per stage and aren't hard to find, and not required to get to the end of the game. Even when your done, is not over yet, 8 more worlds? Rescue luigi? (spoilers) That was a nice surprise. There giant enemies, like in super mario galaxy, some that shadow mario clone who follows you around, the speed run levels with the low time and you get the clocks, boomerang power up and some more.

Super mario 3d world is more of the same as 3d land was, the theme of cats was confusing, is 4 players a classic throw back to super mario 2 (the american one for any japanese people reading) And it also adds more variety to the levels, it may be repeative but it was fun to play,

Sorry is so long, just making sure i answered the question. :)

@Sonic Angel Knight Thanks for elaborating your opinion!

It's all good in the end if you play the games the way you like. It was more pain than fun getting that 100% in Sunshine. Just as you said. Anyway, it's rewarding for me to get those. While I know some people doesn't like collectibles. And it's alright.

What I can say is that you missed a lot of fun by not playing the Galaxy series! In fact, you get a star per level. Just like in Super Mario 64, however this time you start each level knowing exactly the way to get the star, and while there are levels about getting 100 purple coins for finishing them (and getting the star), they aren't as common as in 64 and are funnier this time. Most levels are different from what you could have played in 64, and is always rewarding to finish each level.

In the first Galaxy game, after getting the first 120 stars, you should get them again for completing the game at 100%, but this time they are green, and there are some little differences in the levels, which I don't remember right now.

In the second Galaxy game, after beating the game once, you can find green stars hidden in the levels, in different parts. Similar to 3D World, but you "finish" each level after getting a green star, and should start it again for finding another. The number varies per stage.

Having the Wiimote + Nunchuck as controller is what makes the game so fun! The camera works amazing without having to control it (some levels are tricky, but overall the camera is nearly perfect), so you don't have to worry about getting your view trapped by a wall frequently. Only move Mario with the Nunchuck stick, Jump with A, and Shake the Wiimote for making the signature spin move! The controls are perfect in this game!

Give them a chance! I'm sure you won't be sorry about trying them!

I hope to see a true open world 3D mario game.
for example, mario sunshine has "areas", you can go into another part of the island and see the city in the distance. Why not just make the island connected and you have to walk to go to each area instead of teleportating? also, instead of warping to levels to get stars, there could be level-like areas in the same big world.

I loved sm64, sunshine, galaxy 1 and 2. Super Mario 3D Land was pretty cool, and was kind of "an introduction" or something to showcase the 3d on the 3ds. i liked it, but i liked the others more.

I like them all but my favorites are Super Mario 64 and Sunshine, after that comes Super Mario Galaxy 2 then Super Mario Galaxy. I hope they'll make another "open world" 3D Mario like 64 and Sunshine, I love the exploration aspect of them and you don't really get that in the newer games. Even in Super Mario Galaxy you're constrained to a linear path except for a few secrets.

If mario had a adventure game that wasn't like a rpg, Would it be more like a zelda game, or metroid game or star fox game?

Can kirby be classified as adventure? It's almost the same as mario, get to th end of the level. Not like metroid where you must explore and get power ups. Buut then i never played every kirby game so oh well:unsure:

Kirby and the Amazing Mirror is different from other Kirby games.

It allows you up to 4 players in multiplayer on a GBA with the use of the Link Cable, and it's an open world. You go from place to place, without actually "finishing a level", just encountering and defeating bosses. In the multiplayer, each player can be at different areas, defeating different bosses, or they could be playing together if they wish, and advance through the same zones.

But yeah, a standard Kirby game is level-oriented. Amazing Mirror is not. As comparison, think of it similar to Smash Bros. Brawl's campaign mode.
