The G̶u̶l̶f̶ Gay Stream, or How to Get Half a City to Hate Gays in One Day

Alright, before you get your dick and/or tits in a twist (yowch!), I don't hate gays. Gotcha? Okay.

Now I'm gonna tell you about an experience I've had today. There was a gay carnival thing in Budapest today and I just so happened to have business there. I didn't know this was happening, nor did apparently the hundreds of other people I saw trying to go the same way I was. Let me explain.
I just got my grandma a new laptop. Her old, 12-year old computer finally gave in, and I had to deliver her shiny new lappy today. On my way I realised something was wrong. I was going by tram, but it stopped a stop before I had to get off. Turns out that stop was closed off. And not just that stop. The entirety of Andrássy Avenue was closed off. It's a very long avenue, so I couldn't just walk around it. Not if I wanted to finish today. There was some kind of gay festival going on. Thousands of gays went along the avenue, blocking thousands of other people's access to the other side.
My next idea was to go to the nearest Metro station and go under. I don't think I mentioned the long walk I had to make just to get from the tram stop to Andrássy Avenue. And now I had to go back, since the Metro station was in the same area as the tram stop. When I got there, I noticed that the Metro was closed off as well. I have no idea why they thought no one could go under the Gay Stream but they did and I couldn't change that fact. There was only one other thing I could do. Go to the tram line's end and get on another Metro. Thankfully that one was in operation. It dropped me off on the other side of the Gay Stream, about a kilometre walk away from my grandma. I got there, gave her the laptop and got home. Thankfully the avenue was opened again by the time I had to cross it again.
Why did they have to do this? I have no idea. Pride month was in June, right? Why do it now anyway? And this whole thing is a really bad idea. Only locals knew about it and it fucked with thousands of people's commutes and extended my trip from ~2.5 hours to 4...

But I don't see the point in trying to offend a group of people just for the hell of it.
It is not for the hell of it. Having thin skinned people blow up over nothing frequently leads to hilarity, also a fairly decent way of determining those likely to provide a decent conversation.

I will only turn gay so I can feel offended by your statement.
Why would you have to turn gay for that? You could be offended by the misuse of statistics instead.

Sometime ago, some staff here in gbatemp, one that I actually think is quite respectable, gave me suspension followed by a nice talk about some "jokes" that actually made fun of people by hurting, discrediting or stereotyping them in some way, even though the person making the joke didn't usually notice that. I think this is one of those jokes.

While I don't necessarily go for such distinctions I would like to think I understand the determination of such things. Here though I only see a light hearted pun and a common sendup phrase.

None of that appeared to be hurting, discrediting or stereotyping any individual, calling for negatives towards a group or otherwise achieving such goals against a group, whether by intent or by accident in the title, OP or OP's subsequent postings that I have read (I have not fully gone through the mess in the middle yet).

Because gay madness is an even deeper feeling? But now I have a reason more to spread useless hate! It's not like I have something better to do.

On the other hand, I'm gay now, so..

Couple of SJWs on page 5, I see.

RRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

@spkuja - If the joke doesn't offend you, then shut up. Sticking up for things that don't pertain to you is exactly what an SJW is. Stahp.

@TotalInsanity4 - Too bad. So someone might be *slightly* offended. His joke wasn't hateful, mean, or damaging in any way. It's nothing to get upset over. Even if it was, making people angry isn't a crime. If people *do* get upset over it, well, that's their problem. I mean seriously, why would "the gay stream" upset anyone? ...because they are looking for reasons to bitch, that's why.

As far as having to explain a joke to someone... people are stupid. If you don't know that by now, you don't know many people. Are you seriously suggesting that if even a few people in the world don't get your joke, that makes it not okay? C'mon now... Not everyone is going to like everything.

This is what I meant earlier by oppression. No, we aren't slaves, we aren't being murdered in the streets, and in no way am I trying to compare now to the past. It does, however, seem like anyone in a majority group (such as a white heterosexual male) has to walk on fucking eggshells, because god forbid we offend anyone. People in minority groups think they are "sticking it to the man," when in reality, all they are doing is unraveling decades of civil rights progress, and causing more hate.

People make offensive jokes. It's normal. You should see all the Brazilian jokes going around after the World Cup. Do you see Brazilians flooding the streets, screaming about their national pride over a megaphone? No, of course not. This kind of thing only happens with race, religion, politics, and LGBT, because all of those activist groups have the thinnest skin on the planet. I get it, the past was super bad for some of these groups, but I can also say that none of us here ever lynched someone, right? No black people are still slaves, right? The Christian Crusades are over, right? Okay. Well since the people who lived in that time period are all dead now or very close to, and that those practices are taken very seriously, can we fucking move on please? I'm so tired of people using the past as justification. No one cares, the past isn't effecting us now, those people are just looking for an excuse.

I guess the main point of my rant here is that you don't need to carefully tailor each joke you crack to be sure it's not going to *possibly* offend someone. That's ridiculous. Death threats or something serious, obviously not okay, but jokes? Maybe those people just need to grow up?

Oof. Why are you getting so worked up over this? Short of being personally hurt by someone taking a "joke" the wrong way at some point in the past, I fail to see why you're getting so worked up over me pointing out that people clearly aren't finding something funny

And besides, NOT offending someone via comedy is super easy; just don't make "jokes" at other people's expense. Plus, self depreciating humor is funnier 90% of the time anyway

Will there still be people who will grumble about it because they're contrarian? Yeah, probably. But you definitely won't have a large public outcry like you seem to be convinced is common for any comic relief

It's just something that grinds my gears. I find the logic in this sort of thing very, well..... stupid, and I have very little respect for stupid people. I'm not saying you fall into that category either, just to be clear. You wanted to point something out, I see that. Sorry if the harsh language I used gave the impression I'm upset with you or something, I'm not. I'm just giving my full opinion and view on the matter.

As far as not making jokes at the expense of others, welp, tell that to comedians. Just about every professional standup comedian I've ever seen makes offensive jokes. Why? ...because they are really, really funny. Wanna make some white guy jokes? Go for it! I legit want you to. I don't know very many.

Finally, about the "large public outcry." That all depends on a lot. Where you make the comment is one thing. This website, for example, it a good place to get that outcry. Just look at this blog. Guy rants about being pissed off his day was ruined and the SJWs come marching in, because of a comment that hurt no one. It also depends who you are. No one is going to attack Jon Doe online, because it won't accomplish anything. Now put someone with fame or money in that same position. They will most definitely have people try to sue the pants off them, or anything they can to fuel their self-justified greed.

The point is, even in the Jon Doe situation, this sort of thing is bad. If a certain group starts giving a person hell over something so trivial, how long before that person develops a discontent with said group? Welp, congratulations... because of that trivial public outcry that apparently isn't a big deal, this person now (wrongly) dislikes an entire group of people. Things like this is what *causes* bigotry, not prevents it. Don't want people to hate you? Don't be loud and annoying. Seems like common sense to me.

Most of what you said is reasonable, and I'm glad you took the time to actually thoughtfully lay it out rather than letting this devolve further into verbal jabs at other people. For that, I honestly respect you a bit more now (which isn't to say I didn't before, but you know what I mean I think)

There is, however, one thing I want to address: you seem to be under the impression that Pride events are in some way exclusively for the purpose of forcing tolerance and acceptance of various queer orientations on straight people - to that I say, no, Pride is in no way for our benefit (although, I do know that most Pride rallies will gladly accept straight allies, if you're worried about that). As harsh as that may sound, Pride is an event where queer people can get together and have a party while not having to worry about whether they will be accepted or not based on their sexual orientation (although, while it's a party now, it should be noted that Pride has its origins in a riot protest that broke out after a raid on an underground gay club, so don't think it's all glamour and sunshine, either). In that sense, it really quite frankly doesn't matter whether or not anyone else is inconvenienced or annoyed by it, because for that day, the purpose of the event is fulfilled. I agree that parade and protest events can be annoying and inconvenient, especially if you aren't planning for them. But are they nearly as bad as this? I'd venture to say no
