Operating System BS

You can't have a neutral discussion about Windows here because some random weirdo will come and scream 'INSTALL WONUX YOU FAILURE' at you. On other hand, if someone mentions Linux then there will be that one guy which will start Mac OSX > everything rant or even worse Windows > Linux rant. [I used Linux to describe every damn Distro which is out there] And yes, I also saw the horrible attacks of Windows and Mac OSX skids.

Every OS is okay, ffs. No need to shit on other user for using OS of their own liking. If there is a post about malware outbreak and making useless panic storm of 'INSTALL LINUX BECAUSE IT'S SAFE!' no, it's not. Most servers run Linux and they get cracked in just matter of seconds. You can still get infected on Linux, nothing is 100% safe and secure. Look at Android, you can get easily infected just by downloading and executing simple apk file. Get Wannacrypt and run it under Wine. Bam, your shit is encrypted

'But felek, you need wine to run it so linux is still safe!' *facepalm* Uh, this doesn't prove anything?

Second: 'x OS is superior than x' This might be true because it might have more features than x one but you can easily code those features for x system if you feel like doing so. Oh, you mean those fancy graphical effects which hogs RAM and GPU resources? Well, if your pc is strong enough then it's okay i guess?

'Opensource' bullshit. Your software is as open as my software. [Aka, closed af] Source code might be on Github but some features including kernel are always, believe me, always closed source. This is an expection for some but this opensource shit is pissing everyone off. 'Open-source' is a marketing scam to bait users.

As before you peasants strike up my ass: I used many Linux Distros and overally, operating systems. Every OS had it's flaws and good points. I never stumbled upon a 100% perfected and safe Linux Distro or operating system in my whole, damn life.
Now, let's see how much people will flame me for whatever i wrote here.
Question: Your views on this 'x os > x os' crap?
And as always, see you in a next blog post.

Opensource isn't just some marketing scam (it's funny because open source stuff is usually free.....)

Nobody is disagreeing with you that every OS is different. Nobody. I don't know where you are getting "most servers get cracked in seconds because they run linux". If that happened we would probably have a national crisis on our hands. Linux is safer than Windows, that's a fact. Windows is the more popular OS and hackers make stuff for Windows. It's not as profitable to make Ransom ware for Linux. If you need to download wine, and run this ransom-ware at your own accord, yes it's safer.

Linux is COMPLETELY open source. You can view it here https://github.com/torvalds/linux

Linux isn't everything you run, it is literally just the kernal. Linux is the barebones. It threw me off saying some features of Linux such as the kernal is closed source

ok done

As someone who has used the majority of common/major operating systems, I can confidently say that they all have their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as suitability to certain purposes.
If a certain one works for what you need to do, that's great, shush and go do those things. If it doesn't, go find one that does. Simple *shrug*

My views?

It's nonsense at best. Sure linix is more secure how it trades that in for a steeper learning curve. There are many reasons why Windows is used almost everywhere expect servers( server admins need to know there shit anyways) while the average joe is just going to run Windows or IOS.

Just run whatever you want that meets your needs.

Or, on a tangent: The moron(s?) who claim Linux sucks because it's written in C, but so are major parts of Windows and Mac OS X, as well as basically every embedded OS.

Also, with regards to "Most servers run Linux and they get cracked in just matter of seconds." - I assume you have been paying attention and heard about the "NotPetya" ransomware that's been spreading over the past 24+ hours, right? That isn't a Linux server issue. In addition, the majority of "server hacks" are caused by misconfiguration or terrible administrator passwords, not an operating system vulnerability. (This applies to both Windows and Linux servers.) See "those ISO sites" for an example. (Plaintext passwords in 2016/2017!)

Linux is open source, COMPLETLY, and btw it is just a kernel

Nah i'm running 98 % opensource software (only non open i use is discord)

Ain't gonna attack every one not using linux even though on an objective point of view, the system is superior to windows and osx on a LOT of points

though if people are happy using windows, let them be
but i will at least inform them that there are alternative
so they are not using windows "by default" but because it suits them tight

Nah, I meant websites getting actually hacked. I kinda went too far there but my point was that even Linux servers get cracked

They do, but it's almost always due to misconfiguration or poor practices (as I mentioned in my edit).

Relevant XKCD

There's also the common noob practice of "chmod -R 0777 *", which is basically "make everything writable by everyone". (The equivalent on Windows is setting permissions on C: to "Everyone, Full Control", which I'm pretty sure no remotely competent admin would ever do.)

FWIW I generally don't slam people for using software X when I prefer software Y, unless they're being an ass about it for some reason. (See aforementioned "bawww C is shit that makes LInux shit" troll.)

Linux servers do get cracked, anything gets cracked with time. I haven't seen somebody say that Linux is the great fortress of security that is here to save the world

Well every system is vulnerable
and in the end the biggest flaw in any, is the human behind it

so as long as you got a good user, it is pretty safe even though not absolute

I agree every OS has it's pros and cons (regularly use all five including for reasons such as software compatibility).

That said, if something is licensed under something like the GPL, then you are REQUIRED to release the source code in some way, which includes the Linux Kernel.

There are different licenses though such as the BSD or Apache license (IIRC) which does not require you to share any modifications but the original software is free to download in source form.

That said, a distro may still include closed source software, such as certain drivers.

True.

I tried getting adjusted to using Linux distros and make it my primary OS but I eventually went back to Windows. Now, with Android I'm planning on making the switch sometime around later this year or so because Android has what I'd use on Windows, or it's got great replacement apps/tools to make up for it.

Many people will still stick to Windows but it's starting to phase out, imo. Even the Windows Phones never really caught on.

Part of the problem with Windows Phone is their built-in false advertising. "See? It's Windows, it can run Windows programs! It even has Halo!*" when it really can't. "Universal Windows Programs" in Windows 10 is merely Microsoft's attempt at dumbing down desktop applications so they can run on Windows Phone. Never mind the whole "web app" debacle in 2013 where they started to "package" websites as "apps" in violation of their own guidelines, and without the consent of the websites in question.

*Halo: Spartan Assault, that is. This would be like Nintendo saying last year "See, we have Metroid for 3DS!" and pointing at Federation Force.

@GerbilSoft
Never saw it advertised that way.
It is just a phone with calling capabilitys and dumped apps from Android, nothing else.

@Felek666 It's implicit in calling it "Windows Phone" instead of using some other branding. I would expect a "Mac Phone" to run Macintosh software, or an "Ubuntu Phone" to run the same software as Ubuntu Linux. (Sidenote, there *was* an "Ubuntu Phone", and it didn't run the same software as desktop Ubuntu Linux; needless to say, it didn't do too well.)

OH GEE, WHAT IS THIS? https://github.com/torvalds/linux
Fake marketing scam. Damn. Torvalds wants my money.
I guess Linux from Scratch is not a thing.

I can't even begin to describe how absurd it is that you think it's a """"marketing"""" scam just because you can't grasp the concept of open source..

@GerbilSoft what the shit is your point? I'm aware it is a mirror but that doesn't mean it can't be compiled or used lol.
