Nintendo Has No DS Phat Parts Anymore

A story to start:

Back in August of 2010, my DS Phat finally bit the dust. By that I mean, it suffered a blow to the top that cracked the top screen to hell. The touchscreen had been kinda screwy for a few years from just overuse with games such as Elite Beat Agents and the like. I got this DS, titanium colored as they called it, Christmas 2004. I was ecstatic to get it, as I knew if I did get it, I would be getting Super Mario 64 DS as a game to play. Me and my DS had good times and bad over the six years I had it. By the time it got sent in, both screens were messed up beyond usage for their individual reasons, the battery could barely hold a two hour charge at best (no sound on too, with sound, it was a little over an hour), the L button was to the point that I had to blow it out to use it every time it went unused for more than an hour, and the Slot 1 was freaking out on me a little.

Needless to say, it had it's share of problems, and I wasn't surprised since I got the first model of DS only a month after the system launched in the US. Well, I gave in and went to set up a repair order with Nintendo. I had looked for parts around the internet before thinking that maybe, just maybe I could undertake the more complicated task of replacing DS Phat screens. Needless to say, it was a fruitless search. The only way I could get any parts were to buy lots of old DS Phats that may or may not have any working parts in them, much less the ones I needed. This led to me emailing Nintendo and telling my tale of woe and disappointment in their inability to create a handheld as long lasting as say, the Gameboy Color.

I ended up actually setting up a call time late August of 2010. Now, I didn't get a free repair (I wish :3), but I did get $25 off and free shipping via FedEx leading to a $50 total. This was all fine and dandy, but I had another problem. I had no money. I had maybe $0.50 in change at the time of making the repair order. I was in minor despair at the prospect of losing this deal until I saw the repair orders lasted for a full year. Long story short, I managed to scrape together $50 by December through selling an account on an internet game I play (not a penny in, got $60 out).

Basically, I shipped it at the end of December, thought all was good, and waited. Well, this last Saturday, I get a phone call from Nintendo asking me to call regarding my repair order that they had received. I go to put it off until a little later, next thing I know, it's 6 at night PST and I can't call that day. The weekend goes by, I come home from school today and they called again. I figured it HAD to be kind of important. I called them on my friend's cellphone on the way to his house, gave my name, order number, address and such to verify it was my order, then I got the bad news.

They no longer can even service Phats. They are dead in the eyes of Nintendo. Instead they offered me a free, new DS lite of my color choice. I went with the red and black, but am sad. I enjoyed the sound quality of the Phat, the firm hinge, and the generally well working shoulder buttons. I've used a lite before, and am not impressed by the cheap build in the slightest. Still though, it was a money order I had sent, $50 I couldn't get back in their hands, so I wasn't just going to get that and my old broken Phat back.

Thus, I accepted their deal and now have a new red and black lite on the way. Here is to hoping it will last. I guess it isn't that bad though. New lite with a fresh one year factory warranty for $50. I suppose I could have done worse.

That is actually incredible for a deal. I'm only looking in terms of gains and losses, but that's quite a solid deal. :)

Yep, a good deal for sure.

I sort of knew and feared it was going to happen though. I mean, the Original DS isn't even on the list of items you can email them about.
It's gonna break in shipping.
If it comes broke, Nintendo gets to keep sending me DS's until one doesn't break. :3

Thats pretty solid man. I'd be happy with that deal. For something new that in general usually cost more than that. Hell you can't even get a ds lite for that priced used anywhere unless you got the hookups.

My phat is still going strong. I also got it in '04 for Christmas as a gift from my wife. We just regifted it to our 6 year old nephew this past Christmas so its days are probably numbered now tho.

I'm with you on that one, I've always hated the Lites. I loved my DS Phat, so many years with that thing. I also had mine since Christmas of 2004 when I was in 6th grade, I had it all the way up til the beginning of Senior year. I had it for a solid 5 years, it was an amazing little console. I had to sell it in order to add on to my drumset, I still want to get one back so I can get into the whole hacking/modding scene again but I just don't have the money :\

I feel your pain though bro, even though you did get a good deal, nothing will bring back the feel of the old Phat DS. The build quality was great, the sound was great, and it was bigger (which its perfect for my big hands). RIP DS Phat

Hmm you're in America?
I'm in Canada and the nearest Nintendo HQ is in Richmond, which is only a couple hours away from me. I wonder if I get a DS Phat, and it "breaks", if I would get a free DS lite :O

I feel your pain...I had a DS Phat I got for Christmas of '04 as well, and it stuck with me till early 2008. Everything worked, but the hinge broke, and the top screen started to die. Last game I got to play on it was Pokemon Diamond, my favorite DS game. I have my brother's red DS Phat, and if it wasn't messed up (Shoulder buttons and touch screen are pretty unresponsive), I'd enjoy playing it. Can't wait to get the 3DS so I can play some of my old favorites.

Yeah, it's a good deal. Getting to pick the exact case I was going to replace the case of an old lite with (bad deal was bad) was pretty fantastic too.

I'm surprised the touchscreen has lasted so long while still being responsive. That was the first thing to bite the dust on my Phat. By the third year I believe it was, I could no longer even falsely calibrate the touchscreen (you know, it saying you calibrated, but still being messed up).

Yeah, I'll miss it pretty bad. It was my first personal handheld since an original GBA (so much time under a light at a desk playing that). My hands aren't all that big, but it sat so naturally that it didn't matter.

Not really free, you still have to pay the surface fee. If you set up the deal over the phone straight from the get go, they generally will suggest a new DS lite for the flat $75 over sending in your current DS for a repair (provided you don't have a DSi).

As I said above, the touchscreen was the first thing to really go on mine. I guess the original touch modules weren't made to go under the heavy stress that could be put on by some of those earlier touchscreen games (I was NEARLY a master of EBA, it got so difficult, I still own it though :3). My R button held strong though, never had to blow into it or anything, it just kind of worked until I sent it in. I'm surprised the hinge broke on yours though. The hinge on the Phat is solid as hell.

Getting a new $100 DS instead of a used $30 one? I'd take that over my old phat.

The build quality is just so much higher on the DS Phat. Except for the touchscreen, it seemed like every part was really made to last. The top screen breaking was my fault, and the L button just seemed like a fluke from dirt getting in just the wrong spot.

I had one of the launch DS Phats. It was the one that came with the Metroid 1st Hunt demo. I didn't like it, because I have really girly hands. I mean, goodness...I can still wear kid's gloves. It was a lot more solid than I thought it was going to be.

But, yes, you got a good deal. A $50 new DS Lite? Not a bad deal!

I did have trouble with my first Lite before - the shoulder buttons were crap. I fixed the problem myself by using a bit of blue tack to hold the springs in place. It then died on me, because the hinge ended up busted. (I didn't notice until it finally cracked one day.)

I ended up getting another one, and it's lasted me pretty well. (I'd probably grab another DS Lite from a local pawn shop.)

I had that demo too, don't know what happened to the actual demo cartridge though. All I could find when moving day came this last September was the the awful "case" it had. I open up the cardboard flap and no demo was there. Oh well, I'll live.

On a white DSlite I had before, the hinge broke (the crack was hidden well until awhile after the trade happened), and the shoulder buttons were crap from the get go. Had to practically empty to full breaths (and I breathe freaking deep) to get a single shoulder button working temporairly. After this experience, I'm sure some could see why I may be a little hesitant to just get another DSlite. Maybe I won't have any troubles and am just a bit paranoid though.

The DS phat I purchased at launch just broke. My girlfriends son threw it a couple of times until both hinges broke and the ribbon cable broke rendering the unit lifeless. Does this mean i can't get Nintendo to repair this for me? ...or will I be offered a new DS or just turned away? (I know I can repair it myself but I was wondering if there was still options)

... I'm pretty sure if you purchased it at launch there's no warranty anymore. It launched in 2004.

Im positive there is no warranty. Im talking about paying Nintendo to fix it.
Couldn't you have spent 14 bucks for a screen from DX and then put it in yourself? It's not that hard to do...

As I said in my post I know I can fix it my self (i would need a new shell as well) but like I said I was just wondering if Nintendo would have something to offer me if not to repair the PHAT(with an original shell) or just offer a lite for $75 which is what it would cost to get a repair and shipping.

What are you talking about? Even Nintendo released information about the hinge saying it was a 'design flaw' because too many people were complaining about breaking their hinges and not being able to re-sell it. You must not have rage moments like everyone else, where you shake the bastard too hard...

I'm sorry about your loss...

But hey! A free DS Lite isn't so bad.

There are some things I've grown quite partial to about the ol' Phat, though. Although the Lite's screens are richer and brighter, they have a slight ghosting effect compared to the Phat's screens. One will never notice it unless they've made the transition to a Lite after countless hours with a Phat, however. :D

I generally prefer the satisfying clicky buttons on the Phat to the more mushy ones found in lites. Both are entirely adequate, but the Phat's are simply a tad more responsive, especially when compared to the earlier Lites on the market, which had especially fragile shoulder buttons, and D-pads that were particularly hard to make diagonal movements with. Later Lites rectified these gripes marginally, but the Phats regardless take the cake as my personal preference in the control department.

Also, I've only ever been able to make it to the top of the Spirometer Souvinir in WarioWare: Touched! with a Phat. :O
