Final Fantasy X might be one of the most frustrating, poorly made games I've ever encountered. No other game has ever made me as angry as frequently as this sack of shit title. Where do the issues begin? Let's see.
- A difficulty curve from hell. The first half of the game is ridiculously easy. Suddenly, after the first fight with Seymour, they start turning up the difficulty at a rapid pace to the point that I never felt like I was caught up. Not once. Every time I got close to thinking that, I'd find some enemy that I just had a ridiculous number of issues against. I can't name one of the past 10 boss fights that I've actually beaten in one try. Being at the final boss and seeing that, despite all of the work I've put into Yuna, she still can't take even one turn of damage just pisses me off to no end. Though, that brings me to the next issue.
- Who in the hell thought the sphere grid was a good idea? Who thought "oh yeah, they'll love increasing one stat by some marginal amount repeatedly"? Who figured that the spell casters of all people didn't need shit for HP spheres in their paths, or defense spheres? There is absolutely zero actual balance for any of the characters, and the fact that you have to pick between staying on the path and actually getting useful abilities or deviating using ridiculously precious key spheres just to boost those stats that the developers apparently figured you didn't need is absolutely ridiculous. This makes the license board from FF XII look like a good idea, and I hated that license board intensely.
- They bombard you with equipment, 90% of it not useful, and then require rare items that you don't want to give up just to make that equipment even remotely useful. It's rare that an equipment system is so messed up. Though, you may be thinking "just get the ultimate weapons and half your problems are solved". Yeah, sure, on to point four.
- The ultimate weapons, which, you know, you kind of need if you even want to consider fighting the dark aeons down the line since the damage limit is there seemingly for no reason except to force tedium onto the player, are a pain in the ass. The chocobo race is broken, but sure, let's make that necessary to get Tidus's sun sigil. Like dodging lightning? How about dodging it 200 times in a row without skipping a beat just to get Lulu's sigil? How about playing Blitzball, probably the worst minigame in a Final Fantasy game to date? None of that is fun. I don't feel even remotely accomplished making progress towards anything like that. Yet, they make it pretty much necessary. Oh yeah. Fun.
Overall, I think this might be one of my least favorite games ever. I've burned a lot of time on games before, and some light difficulty is appreciated, but changing every aspect so that it's all as difficult as humanly possible for an inexperienced player. Every time I feel like I know what I'm doing, a curve ball sends me reeling back into nothing but hatred for this game.
It's going on the sell pile with absolutely no remorse. What a waste of cash. Hopefully X-2 is better.
