I want to start by saying that my first introduction to the MegaTen series and its spin offs is through Devil Survivor 1 on the DS and even though it isn't part of the actual Megami Tensei series it got me interested in the other spin off games and even the original Shin Megami Tensei on the Super Famicom, when I got my PSP the first game I got for it was Persona 3 Portable and the other Persona games once they got released and use it to emulate the Super Famicom games SMT1, 2 and If as well as playing through the original Megami Tensei. So i'm not that new to the franchise but even with that i'm finding it so bloody hard to even try to play Persona 4 and P4 the Golden since it just feels off for me considering it just feels too happy and slow when I have played the others and it is considerably darker or atleast keep the happy feelings to a minimum and gives you somewhat a bittersweet ending which I came to enjoy but P4 just kills any hopes I have for the newer games.
I tried to play P4 on my PC with a PS2 emulator but since my PC is quite old it didn't run very well so I had to stop so then I waited and when I got a Vita I picked up P4G for it when it was released in Japan and after a few minutes of playing I got bored with it which is new since I hardly get bored with games in this franchise but nonetheless I struggled on and I do commend that P4's battle system is better than P3's but not by much since P3P improved on it heavily but apart from that the game overall is horrible, I mean what the hell happened to letting your party members explore by themselves to speed up the floor, cause that is exactly what was good about P3 and P3P being able to break off from everyone and explore on your own.
I would stop but I have more to rant about, keeping in mind this is after playing P3P with the FeMC so i'm not sure how the original MC route differs but from what I read its not that different. Firstly I have no bloody idea why the hell do all your party members need to ask your permission for every small thing and this started with Yosuke who seems to have some weird attachment complex since he need to be asking the MC if he should accept his shadow or not which is just plain stupid since its not the MC's shadow its his own and he should be able to accept it by himself with his own strength not get someone else to decide for him and the rest just follows the same old order, meet party member then vs their shadow and have them ask your fucking permission if they should accept their shadow or not. I guess it can't be helped since P4 has got the worst and blandest cast of characters out of any Persona game I played so far I mean who really gives a shit about some rich kid moving from the city to the country and not being able to get the fuck over it for a whole year and lets not forget your oh so lovable tomboy who has a superiority complex after seeing characters with abusive parents, domestic issues and other more real and grounded problems. Its also weird how you always get dragged into the shit that Yosuke does to others like forcing the girls to participate in the beauty pageant and the indecent during the school camp when any normal person would just say no or at least have an option to not go along with Yosuke's shit and that really ruins the whole silent protagonist thing since you don't have that option to actually do anything unlike in P3P where you have some more control.
Honestly the story is dragged out way to long and getting comic relief shit just shoved in when it didn't really needed to be there in the first play and sure P3 has the similar moments but it does at least does put some character development into those parts rather than just be there for the sake of being there for the funnies. Feel free to disagree but this is my personal experience with P4/G and after it let me down in almost everything from story to characters to its overall theme and its lack of controls in dungeons I got no hope for P5 unless it brings back everything that made the original games great like its darker themes, an intriguing story, good characters and subtle and less obvious attempts at comic relief. Also i'm going to leave this picture here since it just proves my point of how P4 is just wrong compared to other games.
