[FAQ] I've got a Gateway in 2017. What the heck should I do with it?

Hey guys, chances are if you're reading this thread you've been away from the scene for quite some time and still have a Gateway flashcart. You might be wondering, "What do I do with this?" and well, there's only two things you can do, keep it or don't. This thread is to help you choose whether you should keep that DRM cart or just sell it for some pocket change, afterall, it is 2017.

Now, before anything, whether you're keeping it or not, I'd recommend for you to install A9LH. However, if you DO happen to keep the GW after you've got A9LH, do yourself a favor and DON'T flash your emuNAND over sysNAND. Seriously, just keep emuNAND, it's so much easier to maintain and it'll only save you from future heartache, as an accidental update in Gateway sysNAND mode could mark the end of your 3DS Hacking career.

Keeping Gateway side

1. m-muh cheats!!!
k so, Gateway has a cheats function. It's pretty cool, y'know? So, this may benefit you in the future if you want quick and ez cheats. Now, NTR, a free overlay CFW, has cheats too, but many would argue that its cheat system just isn't as good as Gateway's, since Gateway allows RAM editing directly on the 3DS rather than over a connection, like NTR debugger, making it easier to make cheats. Also, most cheats are made in Gateway first, then converted over to NTR format, so it's a pretty gud plus if you want first access to codes.

2. ugh i hate waiting for gaymes 2 instal/i have 2 many gaymes and 2 many gw sayves
Well, if you've used Gateway a ton in the past, chances are you may have accumulated a ton of saves. If you were to transfer to a CIA-only setup, it might be tedious to convert all those "legally aquired g̶a̶m̶e̶s̶ backups" to CIAs and install them, and THEN convert all those saves over, so you might as well just keep the card and leave those games on there. also the rom support is drag n' drop, so that's nice.

3. dubble the storage, doobley the trubble xddDd
The Gateway card could give you the ability to use TWO SD Cards at the same time!! so cool!!! and sorta related, it could allow you to screw the back off of your N3DS a lot less than before ;)

4. I collect Flashcarts for some reason
Self explanatory, but if you're a collector, you might wanna keep this thing, or get your hands on one.

Moving onto the:

Not Keeping Gateway side

1. Self-Explanatory
if none of the stuffs cited in the 'keeping gateway' side are to your taste, then feel free to sell it/give it to a friend/just not use it. uh.. yeah.

2. Ignorance is bliss
If you're one of those people who don't trust themselves to not fatally mess something up, then a9lh and gateway probably aren't the right match for you. Maybe just update to the latest firm and buy your games? I mean, if you're using any CFW you must only play "legally aquired video game backups", so buying games isn't an issue.



So that's pretty much it. Reluctant to say, "for now" because who knows if this thread will get looked at, y'know? Anyways, have a wodnerful day/night folks, and always remember to check your 3DS privellege.

I'd say, if you already have GW, keep using it and stop being concerned about the rest.
If you want an all free solution, A9LH + luma is king, but GW still has undeniable advantages.
All this shitting on GW, seems to me, are insecure A9LH users trying to convince themselves they have the best solution.
What's most laughable is those peeps installing A9LH just to use GW afterwards anyway (which as we've seen recently is more dangerous than GW alone).

Bottom line, if GW was such an inferior solution, people wouldn't be spending all this time trying to prove it, it'd be obvious to everybody from the get-go.

The topic of the thread was the OP wondering what he should do with his GW. I personally don't own a GW, but I'm sure that you could easily avoid the cancer by avoiding this thread. Also, GWs still have use, at least until MK7 stops online support. :wink:
Edit: OP was offering suggestions on why other people should keep or toss their GW. I should have read more thoroughly.

i am a TL;DR er what are talking about?
you mean if you are using GW's arm9LH only right? i mean if you use emunand and say luma CFW you can update your emunand and not update system nand right, not everyone uses a9lh
you could boot GW with CFW and emunand and not use a9lh at all GW or regular

what would make it more useful is if the red card would run DS games ,i would think it would be easier for a port or a fork of TWloader
then you could have 2 sd cards and fill the 3ds sd with 3ds games 3ds emlators and roms and put more 3ds games on the GW red sd plus your DS games and ds homebrew

I intend to keep mine because saves, drag and drop, already got a good library of .3ds games and double cards.

Trouble is, today I finally and forcefully evolved to a9lh + luma and I'm loving it, this thing puts SysNAND on a leash (or so I think) and for the first time ever I feel like I can't screw up anything.

Will it be possible to use gateway selector straight from Luma? Having multiple NANDs feel like a hassle now.

Games install on the SD card, not NAND. And it's easy to go from 3DS to CIA with D9.

i hope you don't refer to my question thread because our a9hl disparation happened hours after updating to 11.3 on LUMA!!!

I have one two consoles, one regular size with a9lh v3 and other mhg XL with gateway and emunand, I prefer the one with gateway, all my games are in two msd, no worries of emunand or sysnand bricks, all my games and saves are safe, and very easy to backup.

I am using GW like I am using corbenik with A9LH, never had something wrong with both, they are doing what I want lol

Why did this get moved to the blog section? It could be very useful for users to know what they should do with their Gateway cards and what advantages it has before they part with it or keep it.

In the same boat here. Got a Gateway as soon as they had multi-rom sd support and worked on 9.2 . Put a few games on there, but there really weren't a whole lot of 3DS games I was dying to play (otherwise, I would have already bought them). I got the system to play A Link Between Worlds and the rest was just icing. I recently came back to the scene after not paying attention for quite some time and found out about a9hl and luma3ds and being able to downgrade/update/etc. So I set up a9hl and luma and the latest Gateway CFW, but I'll probably still just use Gateway because that's where my games are already and I'm lazy. It will be nice to not have to do a browser hack though. Whenever I used to go on trips, I would hack into Gateway mode before I left and then just never shut down my 3DS. I had to constantly be paranoid about keeping it charged so that the battery didn't die from the slow drain in sleep mode.
tl;dr No point in buying a card now. But if you have it and you're too lazy to transfer everything, keep using it.

Yeah man why use gw, a9lh is super duper safe, except if while you're installing it on your shiny new n3ds you do something completely unimaginable like closing it while it's on, which leads to a brick.

Now seriously, all the bashing is funny. Whoever was around by 2014 knows that Gateway was the way to go and way cheaper than a 3ds under 4.5 sysnand. And like op said, whoever had it back then has good reasons to keep on it. People used to pay good money for cheat devices Action Replay / Game Genie / Gameshark, why would Gateway be 'trash'? It's not.

Why do people compare a9lh to gateway? They're nothing alike. One is a boot method and one is a CFW. Gateway can easily be used alongside a9lh. No need to use the browser anymore to boot into Gateway mode

@DarkFlare69 I think people use "a9lh" as a shorthand for installing a9lh and luma and then installing games as cias on luma, as opposed to buying a Gateway and putting .3ds files on it (regardless of the entrypoint used).
