Why I dont like steam

Honestly, I don't understand why people give it so much praise. I know they have awesome deals, but to me it's not worth it as I can't buy shit online.

Anyways, I bought a copy of Portal 2 from the store (disk). I installed it a couple days ago, and it was going great. So I decided to download TF2. OH NO! TF2 decided to not download at all. Instead it kept it at "Download starting" or whatever. So when I go to play Portal 2, it lags the game. Is there an option to cancel the download? I haven't found it, I only found Pause download.

So I uninstalled steam so I can get rid of that fucking TF2 bullshit. I reinstall steam, and all of a sudden I have to reinstall Portal 2? But I have the disc in. I never did understand it, why can't I play from the disc, if I own it. All of the fucking data is burned on to it, so why can't I play it? Instead, I have to pop it in, and have to wait over an hour now to play a game, all because it won't let me play from the disc.

And yes, I know people are most likely going to be like "lol steam is awesome, u mad" and some stupid bullshit like that. But aside from the deals, Steam is not worth it at all. Valve is, but not steam. I shouldn't have to have an internet connection to play a game that I bought on a disc. Instead, I get... oh joy, an hour and a half of wait time. THANKS STEAM FOR FUCKING UP!

steam works great for me

"u mad" is from 4chan, it is pretty rampant on some of the online game servers.. a lot of 4chanism, that is

if a game won't uninstall I'd suggest wiping out the subfolder in your program files directory or wherever you redirected the install to. I haven't had this problem and in fact usually I back up all my downloaded steam content when I reinstall windows and then I start downloading the game again, exit steam, and overwrite all of the data and then go back in and it starts me at 99% then finishes so I don't have to redownload everything and take up time or spare bandwidth

steam has saved me from irc, so I am very thankful for that. irc is not good, steam is good...and I can say whatever I want in steam and not get some 15yr old kid throwing a ban fit so I'm set.

There's no TF2 data in the folder. I uninstalled Steam, so I guess it deleted the stuff. All that's in there is the Portal 2 stuff.

oh that's right because it puts your tf2 game into a large wad file in the steam folder. I came across this the other day when trying to find some maps, now where it stored the maps I was looking for I couldn't figure out so I just gave up on it lol.

I suppose if I have to restart Portal 2, it won't be that bad, as I somewhat rushed through it without exploring or anything. (though I did get into that room with the painting of Cave Johnson and Caroline).

What bugs me the most is I finally found someone who was willing to play through the multiplayer with me without being like "okay put a portal here here here", and now they're offline for the day.

So you're telling me, I install Portal 2, it works perfectly fine, loads fast, no hiccups or lag at all. Then the one day I decide to download TF2, Portal 2 suddenly starts lagging, and it's not TF2? You do see how I find that ridiculously hard to believe, right?

And before you ask, or assume, no, I had nothing else running on the computer. I turned it on, went to the steam store, clicked "install TF2", played Portal 2, bam, that's when the problems occurred.[/quote]
So you decided to uninstall Steam entirely?
Certainly doesn't seem like the smartest decision. There are other ways to delete it. Instead of doing that, you should have just done a quick Google search. But whatever.

And yes, that's exactly what I'm telling you. Secundum quid.

U mad is technically also a "Bro" teenager term that's pretty darn annoying, especially being a teenager myself and having to hear it all the time...

Lol you had issue finding the folder location for TF2 maps? Its quite easy.... heck its been easy since the very first CS i played(Before 1.6 lol). Valve always place their maps the same place on all games :)

Dude, the game didn't install. Therefore, there were no files. How the hell am I supposed to delete something that isn't there? Go on tell me, because you apparently know everything.

PEBKAC

you can uninstall from the control panel.

it's also likely that there was some other stuff going on that this steam issue exacerbated. downloads are stopped as soon as you start a game in steam. but without any details, no one will get to the bottom of this mystery problem.

and ranting about your inability to purchase online content isn't helping yourself.

steam's been great to me, i have no complaints. great deals, game consolidation, built-in community features. it's pretty great. maybe next time, just get the console version, and let the big boys have their fun on the computers.

lol can't take you seriously.

Here. Let me make this easier for you.

THE GAME DID NOT INSTALL SO THERE WAS NOTHING TO UNINSTALL! THERE WAS NOTHING IN THE PROGRAM FILES OR THE STEAM FOLDER OR THE CONTROL PANEL!

Hope that clears things up for you. Also, isn't helping myself? I'm not trying to get help in that dept. broski.

I appreciate all the help you guys are giving me, but it's getting retarded that I have to constantly say "the game did not install therefore I could not uninstall therefore there were no files to delete". It's getting a bit annoying to be honest with you having to repeat myself.

Restarting your Steam client should have worked to clear it provided all the local content is deleted (or in your case, apparently didn't exist to begin with). I'm beginning to think that the files were there, just that you didn't look in the right place.

And if that didn't work, you should have deleted "ClientRegistry.blob".

Okay if all you're going to do is just assume shit, please kindly go away. I know where the fuck to look, there was nothing there. Though it's somewhat weird that you mentioned that because my pc just froze again while I was installing champions online or whatever, and now steam won't open:

Not entirely sure what that means, so I'll leave it to you mr. knows everything.

Who's assuming anything?

Delete 'ClientRegistry.blob' and that should fix the problem.

You are with me apparently "not looking in the right place".

And thank you. I deleted it, but now it's saying can't connect to steam network. Problem either with my connection, or theirs. But.. i'm obviously connected to the internet...It did do an update after opening steam after deleting...

Also, I apologize for being a douche. I'm just really irritated. I just want to play my games, but it's becoming way too much of a hassle that it's not even worth it anymore. I just restarted, and that didn't do anything.

Once again, sorry.

Just a few things

1) Steam pauses all downloads while you game so that can't be the cause of your stuttering. People are asking for this NOT to happen since while you game is an ideal time for stuff to get downloaded.

2) The error you're getting is quite odd. Did you install Steam to an external hard drive? This isn't recommended mostly because if the drive moves letters or you remove it Steam goes bonkers.

3) If you need to manually uninstall Steam just wipe the Steam directory and kill the entry in the HKLM\Software\Valve and HKCU\Software\Valve. Then a reinstall should fix things. Just follow the instructions here

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article...=9609-OBMP-2526

Make sure you copy the steamapps folder before you delete the Steam directory so you don't have to redownload everything again. Mostly to save time.

I only installed Steam so I could get Portal.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but try going to C(Or whatever your main drive is):\Program Files\Steam\steamapps and try deleting anything related to TF2.

Team fortress 2 depends of some files:

!!!Before you delete anything you must close completely steam, don't use the x button because it's going to minimize to the taskbar, so close it from there or by the task manager!!!

X:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps
(X is you drive)

team fortress 2 client content.gcf
team fortress 2 content.gcf
team fortress 2 materials.gcf

also it uses some source files

!!!Only delete this if you haven't installed any source game (portal, portal 2, half life, etc...)!!!

sourceinit.gcf
source sounds.gcf
source models.gcf
source materials.gcf
source 2007 shared sounds.gcf
source 2007 shared models.gcf
source 2007 shared materials.gcf

and your personal saves/info/cache/etc on

X:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\Username eam fortress 2

Total: 11.6 GB (at least for me), so check the carpet size, if it's to big (considering that you haven't installed portal, portal 2, etc...) then you have some files remaining.

I have steam since 3 years ago and never had any problem (except downloads but thats normal), also keep in mind that each time you pause a download, steam is going to check every single file that has been downloaded to see where is going to resume the download (that's why you're getting lag, because steam is checking where the file stopped or how much has been downloaded) so leave it for a few minutes and it's going to continue downloading, that's normal don't get mad.
