ugh French is tricky .

well ... today [technically speaking, it is 12:31am. so that means it's the next day] i got a french test to study for .
basic stuff , more like a revision test :
- conjugate -er, -re, -ir verbs [regular] .
- conjugate Etre, Avoir, Faire, Aller, Prendre, Vouloir, Pouvoir [irregular]
- know Inversion [eg. Es-Tu ...? Finit-t-il ...?]
- turn positive to negative [eg. Je ne mange pas ...]
- know how to translate numbers [eg. 1722 = mille sept cent vingt deux]
- translation [translating sentences french to english, english to french, know which words use le, la, l', les .]

meh, 30 page revision was given to study .
everything i got all memorized EXCEPT freakin translating numbers >_> .
it's just the 1000 ... i can't remember -_- .
100 = cent
1000 = mille
1000000 = un million
1000000000 = un milliard

hopefully i can remember those main xDD.

Tell me about it...

I took 3 years of French and I passed French 3 with a D for both semesters.I don't blame myself for getting that grade though but rather the teacher for being a bitch and always gossiping with the teacher next door.

UGH! Those D's look bad on my record :(

i've always wondered though ,
would another language class be any easier o_O?
i understand in highschool [or at least in mine], it's required to take a French class to graduate from highschool for the credit .

Italian or Spanish , are they any easier ?

EDIT: aha, Wabsta . French = Second Language there ?

Spanish maybe. Not sure about Italian. "continues Spanish homework"

Nope, it's not the second language, we don't even have one.. But for some reason our goverments makes our highschools teach us German, English and French. And some schools teach spanish too.

My high school, required 2 years of Spanish to graduate no other options

Spanish is a lot easier to learn than French.A LOT EASIER! The only downside is that French rolls off the tongue a lot easier than Spanish does.

You Ontarians got it hard, eh? It's probably because you're so damn close to Quebec. :)

I'm in BC and I have yet to do anything above 100 in the number category. I'm in Gr. 10. Started in Gr. 4, so I have 6 years of French in me but I don't know how to say anything above 100. :P

BTW, my French teacher is Japanese. No accent whatsoever if you're wondering.

I really miss learning French. Took it for 8 years before I entered university, and I can't afford to use one of my few electives to take it. =\

I had french forced down my throat for grade 4-7, gave that shit up as soon as I could.
Plus going into grade 8 I only knew bonjour and that grapefruit was pamplemousse. Only because I said it PampleMoose.

What you do though, is go to your french class, spit in your french teachers face, and then switch to a better language.
Get a friend to bring a camera too. Youtube it, be hailed as a king.

Incompetent teachers can ruin any subject they try to teach. And judging by some of the replies above (*cough*Hells*Malice*cough*), sour you to that subject forever. Be it a foreign language or anything else, math, history, geography... they can be interesting or mind-wrenchingly, traumatically boring, it all depends on the way they're trying to shove it in. Teaching subjects the wrong way is like shoving an ice cream up your ass. No wonder very few people enjoy it.

And the problem with languages in particular is that they're taught the opposite of how people usually pick them up. Kids learn the entire language before they ever hear of "grammar" or what it does. They learn the language in words and phrases, and when certain regularities start popping up, they apply those regularities to new sentences and new words. It comes naturally. And when they actually start learning grammar in school, they have a huge base of examples to illustrate what every rule means and how it's applied. "Oh, so that's what I've been doing all this time, without ever having to think about it."

The way foreign languages are taught in schools, on the other hand: you learn the rules first, and then try to learn the language around the rules instead of letting you pick them up as they pop up. And when you try to form a sentence, you have to take every word, translate it to the other language, run it through all the declensions, conjugations or whatever mutations they require, and then shove it into place. Manually. Repeat with every other word in the sentence. Hope for the best. Choke. Start hating the language. Repeat. It's the equivalent of that "you are now breathing manually" mindfuck. You get the yips and get stuck at the most basic of actions that used to come naturally. Only you can't take a break, relax and let it come back to you, because you haven't been taught enough of the language for these things to come naturally.

FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU... :hateit:

And most importantly, language is taught through conversation, not through learning a bunch of grammar by heart and then repeating it in front of a blackboard like a parrot.

I hate French as a a school subject.
The only subject I'm bad at. Conjugating is easy, though! Next year, I'm picking applied French. Screw academic.

It ain't that hard. Although, I've got to admit, all those rules are boring and hard to memorize. To be honest, I do most of my exercises by instinct 8D

There's no point memorizing the rules, because technically, nobody will ever ask you the hell you've been doing ever since you were little. And well, even if they would, it'd still be stuck somewhere in your head. I've been doing this for like, what, my entire scholarship.
Glad to know there's someone feeling just like me =3
