I know there will be a lot of diehard fanboys that will defend nintendo/gamefreak till they pass out from screaming but i still want to get some opinions here.
The first Pokemon game released 1996. Sword/Shield released 2019 and because it has some real 360° 3D parts, lets say they used basically the same formula for 23 years now. Just to have some sense of time, Super Mario 64 released 1996 too. Fully 360° 3D graphics in the same year - just on a much better performing console than a gameboy.
Now this:
This "segmented areas" type of gameplay is what pokemon used from 1996 until now and for the next few releasing games. But i ask: "why continue with this?"
The whole world wanted a true open world pokemon game and we hoped that SwSh would be exactly that. Nope, it wasnt. Yeah we got some areas where we could roam around like we wished to but thats just not enough. Why didnt nintendo listen to what we want?
With games like BOTW, Skyrim, The Witcher, the Xenoblade games, the Crysis Remastered Trilogy and now also Dying Light on the Switch, there is absolutly no reason to say things like "the console wouldnt be able to handle this". Yeah, the witcher 3 looks like ass and the Crysis games are not true open world but they get the point across. You can have extremly good looking and moderate/good looking open world games on the nintendo switch. Remember when we used to say "But can it run crysis?" and the answer is "holy shit, the switch can run crysis".
I do understand that there needs to be a tradeoff between (open) world, props/details/visuals and FPS. But what i dont understand is how people can accept how bad this new pokemon game actually looks. Please go and rewatch the trailer. the environment looks like it could be from n64 era, there is no detail in textures, almost no foliage or other props and everywhere you look into the distance the world just looks like someone did a unity pokemon fan project in a week. This isnt really acceptable since other games can looks so good and its even less acceptable because its not even a true open world game.
Yeah yeah, thats not final footage and they can change things and make it look better blah blah blah. I know. All of this is based on the footage we have seen so far and the infos we were given.
I just really hope that they will fix their shit as much as possible. And if they dont, i hope the backlash will be immense. So immense that they will finally, after 23+ years, change the formular (i also know its unfair for blaming them to use this formular on the gameboy/s because the hardware was truly limited).
Please, tell me what you think about this, but please, if you think that visuals dont matter: fck off. A full priced title should look good just as much as having good and enjoyable gameplay.
