Phantom Hourglass First Impressions

still on my quest to play the 2D zelda games available for DS but so far im not really liking this one

id only seen art of this game like the intro cutscene with the paper characters and official art but once i actually started the game i didnt like at ALL how it looked. something about DS graphics in this style never really clicked with me, which is the same reason i never really played any pokemon games after gen 5. i remember being excited for hoenn remake because emerald is my favorite game but i just do not like at all how the game looks. seeing 3D like this is just off putting to me and personally i find it a bit ugly

hearing naavi's voice (or ciela) as link woke up after being knocked off the boat was like oh my god not this again but honestly she hasn't been that bad for now (i've only just crossed the initial cave this is a very early first impression) however i do not appreciate how she stops me from exploring and taking different roads

but what has been the worst so far and if i drop the game this will probably be the reason why, is the movement. this is just, awful. who thought of this? besides the obvious reasons why i hate it so far, you have to tap the touch screen really far away from where you are so link doesn't walk like a slug and it's really just not smooth at all. the sword as "fine" like if they were gonna make me use the touch screen i guess it could be worse but rolling so far is absolutely RNG for me i can't do it consistently

i really want to play through all of the 2D games but if something as important as walking is going to be like this all the time i don't know if i'll finish this one

edit: forgot to say i am usually a defender of "gimmicks" like motion controls (which i actually really love) and stuff that deviates from "normal" sense of interacting with the game but i just really hate this right now

edit 2: played some more. ive gotten more used to the controls, i really like drawing the boomerang's path tho i wish time would stop when drawing like how time stops in botw when shooting mid air. i also really hate how you cant change directions immediately when on the ship and instead i have to pause the game a redraw a course. it really is counter productive and doesnt work well at all. i have liked the dungeons so far but i felt that they were a little uninspired. big also, the more i play, the more i hate the art style. it just looks really ugly on the ds. wind waker looks beautiful i don't know what happened here. the pixelated 3d models with the top down view plus the incredibly muted colors just make it too ugly for my liking

YES! I FEEL THE SAME ABOUT THE DS ZELDA GAMES.
Both sucks.

About Ciela, I think she's actually Ocarina of Time's Navy. It has many hints about it. For instance, getting lost, loosing her memory and the fact that uses the same voice (although many would agree it's just Nintendo being lazy, there's proof of many times Nintendo has done this purposely in other occasions to make a clear statement of Continuation)

About Movement, I'm curious to know if you're using a FlashCart to play these games. If so, there's a patch for both games that allows you to use Buttons instead of the stupid stylus.

im playing on an actual ds tho i have gotten a bit more accustomed to the movement. i think im gonna give it a chance because as much as i think the game looks a bit ugly i think its charming and i really love the amount of personality they gave ciela

thank you for your comments!!! <33

The DS, like the Wii, was chock-full of "tech demos", even years after the system's release and the tech had already been well demoed. Any excuse to prioritise the touch-screen (or motion controls for the bedamned Wii) was taken, even if it meant neglecting the plentiful buttons, even if it meant neglecting actual usability and overall enjoyment.

Pokémon Ranger was decent at it, since while the touch screen could be used for everything, and was mandatory for actually capturing Pokémon, the buttons could be used to walk around, interact, and use menus. This meant the touch-screen focus wasn't overwhelming to the point of being instantly offputting - which, sadly, Legend of Zelda didn't emulate (and the first Ranger game was released a full year before Phantom Hourglass, so EAD could've easily learned from HAL).

This is also why returning to DS and Wii games can be quite painful; the absurd focus on system-selling gimmicks instead of comfortable controls provides a stark contrast to what's available today.
And, well, emulating touch-screen games is incredibly awkward too - the mouse is no stylus. Nowhere near as accurate or comfy.
