Sextortion

I have got few of the emails claiming that he knows my password at time of the hack hehe because the password is old and claim they recorded me while watching porn or whatever and they will send the video to my family if I didnt pay hehe.

I dont and never used webcam on pc and it is very difficult to access phones cameras right? Hehe

I found it in the junk folder on my gmail.

did any of you get these email before?

Why yes, yes I have. It gave me a good chuckle, seeing as I use a desktop and I don't keep a webcam hooked up to it.

Why scam might be good to understand as well.

To "get" people as described you'd have to individually target them, then wait until you capture them 'in the act', and take your time scrubbing through the timeline for that content.


So this is:

300 USD/hour salary (if it is a targeted attack and not spear fishing (which it would have to be, because you arent sharing your webcam video in that situation with any webportal, arent you?) ) for 2-300 hours + setting up a backend server to record videos to - so ongoing expense. At file sizes where transferspeed for most people could become an issue + about 30 USD/hour salary for another 2-30 hours of someone scrubbing the material, for *typetypetype* the chance to get 300 bucks?

Which more than half of people will not pay?

Follow up question - you new to how this internet thing works, right? ;)

If the wolds dumbest hacker wouldnt do whats proposed in that email, chances are pretty good, that you've been had. ;)

I know about these stuff of course and before I do anything I copy the scam and paste on google to see if it is universal issue or not.

I should not have known about this email in the first place because it was in the junk folder. I check it sometimes.

Not personally, not that I know of. But I've seen YouTube videos talking about them.
@notimp Where did you get that 2-300 hour figure from? That sounds like a lot.

You write an exploit and then you write something your target hopefully clicks on.. ;) Lets say he does Windows updates regularly and runs an anti Virus software, would be hard to 'batch something together' from metasploit toolkit to then start a live attack with, no?

But the issue then still is propagation (and a bunch of other 'empty time spending' on each and every user), so so you then go over to spear fishing?

Just to then be left with hours of video? ;)

Everyone masturbates - it's no big deal, I've been caught in real life a couple of times and only thing that happened is we had a laugh about it.
As for blackmail - just report to the police, it's illegal to blackmail people. As for scammers - just ignore them and put the emails on your spam list.

@notimp But you wouldn't write an exploit just to attack a specific person (well, usually) the exploit could be used and reused many times over and you might even be able to use something preexisting, and actually getting someone to click a link or open a file is not very time consuming for the hacker at all, just takes some social engineering skills.

I gues it´s just a phishing mail. What could they have captured. You jacking of in front of a P.C. everyone does that and relatives ain´t interested in that kind of content.

@The Real Jdbye: You are correct. So we are only talking about repeat costs (and scamsters honor) being the preventative elements here. :) While trying to estimate, if the overall return would be more than about 200.000k (what you could sell a good exploit for, without any work.. ;) ).

Ah, I think I found another issue. ;)
(Mainly the 'if you could write that stuff - you should have other (more lucrative and stable in terms of income) venues open to you to get payed - even in a remote country. :) )


edit: And another problem arises.
The most you can get out of people on average is 300 USD. (That should be around the optimized value), so when you own their machine, why not encrypt it instead, like all the others? I dont think , the 'nudes' scam would net you more average gain. :)

Anyone can. You just embed in the email a white pixel as an image, then let it originate from an original address (per consumer), and you know when the person has opened the email.

Advertisers use it all day (to see if people click on their emails).

Scamsters apparently use it to make you think, that they had access to your system (we saw, you opened mail at date:timestamp), which they havent.
