I have been here 11 years, today.

So remember last year how I said I was going to update the OP if this post? Well here it is. The reason I havent done anything till now is because my life kinda went sideways a year ago today. I don't want to get into specifics but things are better now. Much better. Anyways. I was going to sit you all down and tell you the rather un-interesting story of how I came to be here.

So first things first. 1. If you want to read my embarrassing first post ever, be my guest: http://gbatemp.net/threads/im-brand-new-and-need-help.67546/
2. So my first forray into anything "illegal" with games was when I was in 9th grade. A friend of mine gave me a disk with most of the roms from the NES. My best friend would come over and we would play random games all night. Later I would get a DS phat with my earnings from my first summer job. I the next summer I got a new job and eventually ran into a kid there who had a Datel Max Media Dock. This thing was the holy grail as far as I was concerned. This was around 2005~6 when those little 128mb mp3 players were showing up. I wanted something better. I knew I could do better than getting a dinky mp3 player (actually I had one at the time, but anyways) but not going as far as buying a newfangled iPod. And there it was. A media player for the DS. What could be more perfect. So i started hunting. I would need an obscure "compact flash" card which even for mid 2000s was already outdated. But a hunting I went. Eventually I got the model without the build in harddrive and used my own CF card. It was kinda cool, all bolted on to my DS phat. It worked ok. The video was alright but it only played from the beginning. If you tried to jump around at all, you started the video over again. Eventually I traded it in for a new single cart solution, the Datel Games 'n' Music. I got closer to perfection with this iteration, but still not perfect. The music and games worked a little bit better but very shortly after getting it, my DS stopped recognizing the actual cart. To this day I have not figured that one out. I returned the product and got another one. Still nothing. Eventually I got rid of it but kept looking.

And that is more or less how I ended up here. I did some Googling for a DS media device and found some post pointing me towards the R4. I had to have one. I bought one and had it shipped to the house and my parents wrapped it for my Christmas gift. It was amazing. I spent the whole Christmas break figuring out how to use Moonshell and putting all my music on it. It worked better than my bother's iPod for the time. And for the foreseeable future. But I kept coming back here. And the rest was history.

I know this wasn't really worth waiting a year to read but there it is. I love you guys.

you helped me discover gbatemp now has a birthday date thingy, neato! also congrats. :)

This just made me check my join date, and holy crap, 4 and a half years. Time sure flies. Love y'all.

@TheZander oh hell yeah. I spend a long time that break experimenting with homebrew but the biggest thing I was after was getting Moonshell to work. The R4 was bought because I wanted to make my DS into a media player. And I was very successful. I used it for years. It outperformed my brothers brand new iPod Nano and other mp3 players at the time. I watched music videos, played music (even with the lid closed haha), played games, and homebrew. It was a golden age for my DS, and the birth of my interest in the modding community.

I am great Leon. Sometimes you hear about people talking about how they want to achieve their dreams. And I think a big mistake a lot of people make is never stopping to look at just how far they have come, regardless how far off their current dreams are. I can say, right now, I have really made it. Married, have a job, own a car, disposable income, and many many friends (including you guys).

I plan on cementing myself here in this community as long as I possibly can, I want to be on of the greats, like Costello, Shaunj66, and Thug. <3 You will not get rid of me so easily.

Good times indeed Bortz! Glad to see you still around as you were always active and supporting from what I remember so you deserve to be where you're at today.

Brings back a lot of memories when you mention the Datel products. Back when the flashcart scene blew up and learning about everything at once. I was glad to be a part of this community during that timeframe. I hope you stick around until the very end. I too have been here 11 years. Join date was October 1st 2007 so close to when you first joined as well. It's awesome to see old members still being active here as it takes you back to a great time.

Brian, my man! I'm glad to see you still kickin around here! Man, good times, huh? I mean just the idea that I could take my favorite little gaming machine and make it into a better media player than the iPods of the time with a simple card was mindblowing to me. And it only kept going. Homebrew games, videos, retail games too! I loved the feeling of descending into the gaming undergound!

Man so many good members from back in late'07 huh? And so many cool things happening with the scene. You and I really did get in during the golden DS hacking age. Ha! No way man, I am not going anywhere. I will stick it out as long as GBAtemp will have me.

Thanks Bortz! I frequent the board a lot but never post much as I've lost touch with the scene a bit and not too familiar with any of the new things. But heck yeah we got in during the golden DS age. That was the best time to be around and own a DS and a Wii. GBAtemp was the main community (still is) to keep up with the scene. Learning about every flashcart being released for the DS and learning about the Twilight hack was so much fun. Speaking of flashcarts do you remember the infamous DS-Xtreme? The most expensive plug and play flashcart? I still own mine however it has been broken for years and years. Nothing I do can get it to be recognized by my DS. Something wrong with the contacts I believe. I found that 01media still has them for sale from their original batch for like $27 each. I bought 2 purely for nostalgic reasons. I figured that's a decent price to pay to relive my scene days and remember the good times. Keeping them as trophy's in all honesty :ha:.

Many many good members yeah! A lot come to mind whom I miss interacting with. That's why it's great to see you still around as it makes GBAtemp feel like it used to be. Do you keep in touch with any of the older members still?

Yea I deeply appreciate to all the hardworking admins/mods here also supporting devs in every scene. I joined here during the Wii U/3DS hacking era and neither one would be fully hacked if it wasn't for this amazing site and wonderful minded people. Gratz Bortz :) we may be getting older, but our memories are still cherishable.

Oh dear lord, the DS days were some of the best. I started off with the MMP myself. Terrible choice..
