I just watched princess mononoke for the first time

...Holy shit, that was amazing! I mentioned finally getting context to iconic scenes from the movie I watched..this time it wasn't JUST scenes I got context to,but I got to see what inspired certain filmmakers and artists to do the work they're doing.more specifically, the legend of Zelda franchise is SO heavily inspired by this film it's unbelievable.from the little Forest spirits that are like koroks, to the beautiful landscapes and music that the breath of the wild tries to emulate in a sense.i had always heard it had a huge impact on a lot of creators and animators, but finally seeing it and knowing why was amazing.this movie is undoubtedly in my top 10 all time favorite movies now! one of the few movies I can genuinely call a masterpiece <3

I'd love to hear what everyone's first thoughts were when they saw it and maybe a suggestion for which Ghibli film I should watch next!I'm so glad I'm finally getting around to watching these amazing movies!

It's a great movie, but there are more like it that are really amazing, even if they aren't Ghibli! For non-ghibli, just for animation and narration, you may want to check stuff like Summer Wars/Wolf Children/Garden of Words (GoW has by far the best visuals out of all non-hand drawn anime).

Have you seen any other Ghibli movies, OP? They're all quite different even if Miyazaki's animation is the glue that connects them. Everyone has their favorites, but I'd first say watch Cagliostro no Shio (The Castle of Cagliostro). Miyazaki made this one before Ghibli was a thing, but the animation is just as good. Story is mainstream and fun. Then watch Laputa, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Porco Rosso. Once you've gotten through those, Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi). Maybe the best. After Spirited Away, watch Nausicaa, Howl's Moving Castle, and My Neighbor Totoro.

Or in any order you like. There are a few other Ghibli films, and they're all good, but I think the ones above stand out. Ponyo and The Wind Rises are both also directed by Miyazaki. The Cat Returns was directed by another member of the Ghibli studio, but it still quite interesting. And there's Grave of the Fireflies, which I wouldn't recommend unless you're emotionally prepared for a very, very sad film.

It is a classic my friend. What did you expect?

FYI, Next on your list should be Spirited Away, Ponyo and Kiki's delivery service.

All are Ghibli anime and all are unique.

Castle in the Sky is still my favourite, but there's always been something magical about Howl's Moving Castle. Both fantastic films.

That was a great movie, I remember pirate/watching it almost 20 years ago, from some multiple-times rewritten VHS (my eyes).
I bought it again in BluRay last year (for some reason BluRays are quite cheap in Spain, Amazon let me get them from Germany without any complain, and I would see a movie with Spanish subs over German any day). It was even better than I remembered (damn VHS).

That said, regarding Ghibli I am more of a Isao Takahata fan, and I really love that movie... ???... erm... Omohide Poroporo (sure it has an English name), I love it, I also like Whispers of the Heart quite a lot, and mostly everything from Ghibli TBH.

It's been on my watchlist for a while, along with a bunch of other Ghibli movies. I recently downloaded the entire Studio Ghibli Miyazaki collection so I should probably get to watching some of them soon.
I recommend Spirited Away, that's my favorite of the ones I've watched. But they're more or less all great.
I've seen like 6 or 7 of the Ghibli movies and enjoyed them all. Just pick one at random, or watch them all in order, you can't go wrong.

Watch whatever you want from Ghibli, but when you are through Ghibli per-se, and if you want more of that, I would advise to watch some other movies and series where Miyazaki and/or Takahata have been involved.

There is this movie called Horus, Prince of the Sun. I must say that though this movie is from the 60s or so and it appears like people were on LSD while making, I enjoyed it. Also, though The Castle of Cagliostro is not strictly a Ghibli movie, it is also great.

Regarding series, I have some attachment to Future Boy Conan, a series from the late 70s directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

PS: There are/were also some other great movie directors, like Satoshi Kon (RIP), Mamoru Hosoda (whose Girl that leapt through time I liked quite), Makoto Shinkai (I am a big fan, go with whatever you like, but 5cm/s would be a good one I guess, unless you prefer to watch the lately so-much-popular Your Name), Masaaki Yuasa (I really liked his series Kaiba), long etc. ThoD already suggested movies from some of them. I would recommend you choose some director whose movie you liked, and start watching other movies from that same director.

i actually watched it last year after downloading it via Tubemate...only problem was, the last 10 minutes were missing. other than that, I immensely enjoyed it.

Sorry about neglecting this blog here, I have watched ghibil movies before my first one was spirited away and after watching it I learned about miyazaki and studio ghibil, then I watched castle in the sky making this my third ghibil movie.

It's funny you noticed Zelda being inspired with this movie.
I don't know if you found the "blue horse-like spirit", it also look inspired (for me) with the forest's spirit/god from the movie.

I watched that movie few years after watching Nausicaa, and I found that it was a pale copy.
It's like Nausicaa but for a more wider audience, more international, with the same theme of saving the planet, and living in harmony with other species.

My favorite Ghibli are :
Nausicaa (because I watched it first, I found Mononoke not so great. You'll have the reverse effect, watching mononoke first will make you like it most)
Mimi wo Sumaseba, because there's nothing fantastic, it's just a slice of life from a young girl in our world.

I LOVE Ghibli films. I'm not an anime fan by any means but i jump at the chance to watch these movies. I really liked Princess Mononoke. It's action packed, violent, and theirs a creepy goat demon.
Shameless plug, but my favorite Studio Ghibli films are
1. Spirited Away (2nd favorite movie ever)
2. Whisper of the Heart (Cheesy love story, but fun to watch with my girlfriend)
3. Castle of Cagliostro (Its an older one but its a heist/thriller movie)

I would also watch Nausicaa if your feeling like watching something a little dark and Kiki's Delivery Service if you want a few laughs and to smile.

BUT WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT WATCH "GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES!!!!!" I REPEAT, DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE!!!!!!
This movie f****d me up man.......

I loved Grave of the fireflies back in the day, but you made me remember of a friend of mine.
I was so eager to share this movie with him, and after I finally was able to get him to watch it, well I think he cursed me for a couple of weeks.
Oh, ungratefulness...

@sarkwalvein I've heard this movie described as "the greatest movie you'll never want to see again," and for good reason too. Its a wonderful and beautiful film that needs to be shared and remembered for a long time.... It's just its..... not an easy film to sit through. It's disturbing, gruesome, unsettling.

People should watch it but they need to know what they are getting themselves into.
