How to get people to stop calling you

Sooo for the past couple days I had been getting phone calls from a number that is geographically near me but the person is not known to me. These calls come at around 11am each day and of course I'm not with my phone when they call so I don't pick up.
All I am left with is the number that called, no message left.

So I call the number back and ask the person on the other line why they were contacting me, I'm thinking this could be an old friend with a new number at first. Each time I end up talking to a lady who says "Why are you calling me? What company do you work for? This is my phone no one else uses it. I wasn't even awake at 11am. I didn't call you. You didn't recieve a call from my phone and so on..."

I let this happen like 2-3 times...then...I used a reverse phone lookup. I got her full name and street address.

Next time I get a call from this number...I'm going to ask politely that (Insert full name and FULL address here) please refrain from calling me or lock their cellphone when they are not near it because I don't want to be called anymore. I'm thinking that will be enough to have the person crapping themselves and maybe paying better attention to what they are dailing.

This incident reminds me of another time I kept getting calls from a strange number...this one was registered to someone in florida. I am in new york. Sooo I had recieved about 5 calls from this person before I called the number back...
I end up talking to some hoodrat who picks up the phone and says "Why you callin my man? Why you callin my man? You'd better stop" I simply told them at A. I had never called that number before in my life B. That she should probably stop calling me before I tell her man that she is being a crazy bitch. If that number would have ever called me back again I would have looked it up and made her crap bricks.

The end =)

So what do you do when you can't see the number because it's private? Because someone is calling me all the time too and hangs up right after I say hello. :P

Oops ... was that you?

Sorry.

:P

Seriously though, if you are getting random calls, from unknown numbers, don't say anything, when you pick up the phone ... see if they say something first.

If they do, you can get talking, and find out what the deal is ... if they don't, and they just hang up again, they usually wont call back ... this is because they are probably trying to get hold of a specific person, and some people, when given the wrong number, will ring again and again, til they hear the voice of who they are looking for ... when no-one speaks, they often, finally, take the hint.

Just my experiences, anyway.

I saw a cheap phones with number firewalls on dealextreme that could fix a problem (like adding all your friends to some whitelist), maybe if you have phone with symbian you can install firewall application for numbers. Or maybe you have some restriction options in phone (I read that some new phones have that in menu).

I have caller ID so out of habit I always dial it back to see who it was... and it turns out to be a telemarketer who calls over and over until you pick up and then hangs up.

Atleast here in sweden it is pretty easy to get someones adress and name etc IF you know the number, but if u dont know the number you can call your provider and tell them that someone is harrasing you and if they can help, and i would guess that they want you report it to the police and (this is how it is in sweden) then the provider have the right to hand out the number to the police and they will deal with it(in due time...).

If the caller that calls and hangs up is just a prankcaller i am quite sure they wont prankcall you again if they get a policecomplaint. :P

I while back i had a number call me and hang up each time i picked up the phone.. after a while i got pissed and called back and on the other line i got "you might be wondering why we have called you, we are a company that are specialzed in....".
They where so cheap that they had ME call them and wanted me to pay to listen what they had to offer me :hateit:

You are correct, on symbianphones there are quite a few "blacklist" applications where you can select what numbers can get through, the only thing i see as a problem is if something happens to your family or friends etc, and someone might try and get hold of you from a number that is NOT in your list, they cant.

Pretty sure in my case I'm not getting pranked. I think I'm simply being called over and over by idiots that don't understand how to use their cellphones or forget to type in the proper prefix....etc. etc.

but thanks for the feedback on this kinda stuff...that whole blacklist feature sounds pretty tight.

man...yellowpages has been bugging me at my home office too...I'm thinking of calling yellowpages and giving them the same crap they keep calling me for. Would be wicked funny to call yellowpages and claim you are yellowpages trying to get their information verified so you can list them. They seem to call everyday and I've pretty much taken them to be scammers or telemarketers so I just talk over them while they are talking to me..

Phones and people are funny things.

Who says you have to answer it.

Just now, yes this happened as I post (kinda handy for the example eh) I got a call. I ignored it. Want to know why I ignored it?

Because I KNOW know one will be calling me that I actually want to talk to. My friends are at work. My family is at work. It's 9:30 in the morning, no one I know calls me at 9:30 in the morning.

I KNOW who was calling. It was the same call each morning. Ya see, 3 YEARS ago I moved, and the dumb ass utility got it in their head I owed them 500 bucks MORE (good luck). Well of course it's just a collection agency (too bad losers, I don't use gas, and I'm on an inclusive rental these days).

Now occasionally I pick up and its them. Some times I answer in Japanese just for shits and giggles. Every now and then I tell them I already paid it (takes them a while to figure that out). But for the most part, I get dead air, then "please stay on the line for [insert someone else here]" and I figure yeah right, you think I want to talk to someone so lazy they can't even phone me directly?

I never answer the phone if I'm watching tv and the good part is just happening.
I sure as hell don't rush off the toilet for anyone, even my mom.
I don't own a cell because frankly your call is not so valuable it can interrupt my eating dinner out, or while driving, or walking down a street, or in a movie. Shit get over yourself, you are not so valuable you must be reachable anywhere any time :)
I don't understand why people pay so much just to have the dumb things.

If you need me, call at home. If you missed me, call back. If it's not important, well I guess it doesn't matter that I missed it.

I don't mind being called at ANY time on the clock, but I have to want to answer it.
If I'm in the zone playing with the wife, you can bet she's getting a sore ass if she answers the phone :)
