Hey, I want your opinion on this;

Today, I was talking with my parents about gaming.

My mom told me that video games should be a challenge. That video games aren't as great as they once were on the NES/Genesis. She said that video games should focus on the player having to master the game, and that they shouldn't be able to be completed easily, at least unless the game is part of a different genre that doesn't require difficulty. (Ex. Animal Crossing)

My dad had a completely different opinion. He said that video games should be immersive, and able to feel like you are removed from reality while playing them. That games should have a cinematic quality to them, but to the point of involving the player. ("Kind of like a playable movie", he said) They should provide an "experience".

So, that said, I'd like to know, which point of view do you agree with, or better yet, do you have your own opinion? Keep in mind, these are only opinions, so there's no right or wrong.

I play video games like all the time. I agree with both on the other hand. Its true that old games were way better then today's games. I might not have lived back then, but I've played alot of them. I don't care if their outdated or not I'll still play em. Hells Malice, Same here once I get into a game, I'll play the crap out of it until I beat it.

I agree with both of them, and feel that both kinds of games should exist. I grew up playing NES/SNES titles due to not being able to get the latest stuff, and find them absolutely fucking amazing, but I also enjoy the cinematic and immersive experiences as they are able to offer their own...uh, merits...yeah, I need to expand my vocabulary or something here.
So yeah, I hope we continue to see both kinds of games, or a fusion of both, there's room for all sorts of games :V

Same with GE, both those type of games can make a game good without requiring the other.
your mom already answered your question actually.
"at least unless the game is part of a different genre that doesn't require difficulty. (Ex. Animal Crossing)"

not all games are the same. there are challenging games (shoot'em up?) and there are evading and contemplating games (journey?) or immersing games (VR?).
the purpose are different, and games shouldn't be stuck to a single type or genre.
Damn, 2013 blog...

It depends on the game really, different ones go for different styles, but in general, I would agree with your dad on this.
Immersion in a game is super important.

I agree with both. Journey wasn't a difficult game, but it was incredible because it was immersive. Same for Professor Layton, in a way.
But, I also enjoy challenging games. Shovel Knight was a fantastic game, because it wasn't easy. Rhythm games are the same way. It takes a while, but being able to play Project Diva on the highest difficulty feels like an incredible accomplishment, because I worked for it.

In short, both are right. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Games should give you an experience which you won't forget that easily. It also should provide lots of opportunities to discuss certain things in the game. But they should have gameplay and a world that makes you come back everytime

games should be enjoyable. that's all.
Play the one you prefer, when you want, and don't care about other people opinion and reviews :)
Nobody like the same things, and taste can change with time, so you can end playing different style and playing games you didn't enjoy in the past.

"playable movie"
like that games were they are basically are cutscene after cutscene "press x very fast now so your character opens the door or he will die"
it's a good way and fun way to watch a movie or a story. but i don't see them as actually a game.. i don't know how to explain but i am not really a fan of that type of game and i get easily bored and not amuzed at all
i don't find them immersive.. it's like a movie with distractions and pauses..

games in my opinion, more like your mom says, since when the game is a challange the graphics don't matter anymore, you'll be out of the real world and in to the game in no time... to explain better, look at the drawings on the walls of your kinder garten, i'm sure that in your mind they'd look a lot better when you were in class. but truth is, they didn't look that great back than, but your mind made those pictures better since they brought you you those cartoons or stories you loved... when there's a deeper layer in your brain connecting to a picture you'll see this differently and forget about all the details... when a picture is amazing detailed your brain will focus on all the details and only bring you the imperfect feeling...

all those claims are stupid. that's my opinion. some games should be challenging. some should be immersive. some should be silly. and some should be all of those things. people like different things. different games for different people.

personally i like games that are immersive (skyrim). that are a little bit challenging but not insanely so. (so not dark souls level of difficulty) and sometimes i like silly games (saints row series).

I don't care if a game's difficult (newer games are quite easy compared to old ones, for instance, and I like them) or if it's immersive (tons of games aren't immersive and most of my favorites don't really immerse you)

If it's fun, I'll probably like it. Never been too judgmental on anything, including games.

I like games that are immersive and challenging, but I guess immersive is more important. I loved SMT IV, but I also loved Persona 3 and 4, even though they were easy compared to SMT.

I really liked Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3.

One game I absolutely hated was Journey. I thought it was so boring. I let out the biggest sigh of relief when it was over.

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Booo.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
