A review of a rare/unpopular game.

Hello, Today I have decided to review unpopular/rare games that I can get my hands on from time to time. Now these are really ANY games I get that most wouldnt take another look at before buying the current AAA game or you would only drop maybe 15 or 20 bucks for a used copy just to try it out.

Today the game im reviewing is...

MONSTER TALE!

Platform: DS
Genre: Platforming/Shooter.

Graphics: B+
Gameplay: C+
BGM: C
Story: C-

Summary-from amazon:
A group of nasty kids have snuck into a secret world inhabited by monsters and enslaved them as their pets. This ragtag pack of kids is using the monsters to do all sorts of selfish, destructive things that will ultimately result in the downfall of the Monster World. That is, until little Ellie discovers the Monster World and befriends a mysterious young monster named Chomp. This dynamic duo sets out on a fantastic adventure where our Monster Tale begins.

Well for the most part is does take alot of elements from the popular game series. but, it also has quite a few nice little quirks, foremost would be the "Monster Santcuary" which is basically a pet raising sim on the bottom screen. Now before the "OMG GIMMICK RAGERAGERAGE" starts coming out bealive it or not its actually a smooth and neat part of gameplay. As Chomp is on the top screen his health/special/energy meter goes down slowly but surely, which makes chomps position and meaning to the player change. For example. If you use chomp as an active partner then he's going to gain alot of fighting experience which ulimatly leads to him gaining the perfect fighting form.

But if you use chomp as a supporter then hes going to gain more abilities which make him better at using toys and items on the bottom screen to fight safely and level. But hes not going to gain a form which helps battle and when you run out of ammo (items) then hes pretty useless. Dont start thinking chomp is the whole game. Elle also gains special abilities which help her in battle. But the fact that most abilities either feel little you should have had them when you started (dashing and a melee attack need to be learned? Seriously?) or are only going to be used for roadblocks, which while quick, get annoying when the game requires more backtracking.

The story is also VERY sub-par. The main character has almost NO emotion while even the bosses show SOME form of attitude. The story is very linear and you really stop caring after second boss. The boss fights also feel backward. While in every other game the bosses get harder as you play the bosses in monster tale seem to get easier. However dispite these fails, The sprites are amazing for a platformer I mean ellie looks like a freaking ninja with a handbag and the backgrounds are pretty detailed along with a mystical kind of art style that will make you want to know more about the world.

Overall I would say this game is a pretty cool game to grab when waiting for your AAA (Im talking to you 3DS users :3) and is quite fun. However, I wouldnt pay anymore then 20 bucks for this game.-Zantigo
(thanks for the paragraphing kirbyboy :P)

I hoped you enjoyed my review please comment and give me some feedback!

Comments

1. Monster Tale was overly hyped on GBAtemp
2. I Enjoyed Monster Tale myself
3. I did not immediately think "WTF Megaman Zero"

IMO, you were a bit harsh on it.

i wished there was a new game plus mode
as the grinding to get the extra ending pic by fully leveling all monsters got too repetitive
nice experience
No one likes walls of text.
You sure? I love how blood slowly drips out of my eyes, and then turns into a steady stream as I continue attempting to read walls of text.

When playing Monster Tale your first impressions on it would most likely be: "WTF Megaman Zero!?"
Castlevania would have been a better example, I never once thought about Megaman Zero while I played it. Also, the story is meant to be linear and the characters are meant to be simple, it's a game made with kids in mind.

Here.

A bit better imo

If anything, the game is more like the Castlevania DS games. I found the game to be better than what you are making it out to be.

Nice to hear people being honest about it :3 Also ill try to redo the main post, as I wanted to add screenshots and links for it but I got a bit lazy after typing the article. Also, I made this review thinking GBAtemp not everyone. So I didnt think about the game being targeted at kids :P Also, This is really the first time i've done something like this so I figured I would start with a simple game like this so I know what to improve on. But I will keep the wall of text thing in mind since im not too good with remebering to have paragraphs. Also personally I saw alot more megaman and metroid then castlvainia. Also Nathen I dont think I made it out that bad. But your right, I didnt put as much of the Pros as I did Cons.

Ever played the Metroidvania games (specifically Symphony of the Night, the GBA Castlevania games and the DS Castlevania games)? That's what we're referring to. Here's a clip, I hope you'll agree that the games are pretty similar:

Ahhhh I see what you mean... I never played the DS castlvainias.

The first thing I thought when I played it was that is sounded like music from a game I played a long time ago. Still was fun, though. :yay:

Monster Tale is rare/unpopular? It was getting hyped to shit before it was released here. Yet again, who here actually buys games, amiright?

Seriously though, this deserves higher scores, it was pretty amazing.

It's one of the rare game I've completed, because it was hyped on gbatemp :P
So it's not a rare unknown game here.

I never thought about megaman while playing that game.
More about Castlevania or Metroid.

Though, I didn't like one thing :
You don't have to go back to an old place to explore the game by yourself yo find hidden items/power etc.
All back walking to find a power is a mandatory power and a mandatory place, you need to go there if you want to complete the game and there is no other place to explore by yourself.

It's too much :
Start at point A
Go to point B, you need to go back to point A to get the power to advance past point B
Go to point B to advance to point C
Go back to point B to get the power to pass point C, which of course is the farthest place of point C
Go back to point C, to advance to D, to go back to point C to get the power to pass D, return to D to advance to point E
Go back to D to get power of point E, go back to E to advance to F,
etc.
You never need to go back to an old place, like A once you are on D.
All new powers are on the previous place. you are walking to a point where you "learn" that you need a power which is located "where you were !"...

Every time you do the same route back and forth and forth and forth.

It's not an evolving metroidvania game, it's a back and forth game.

Graphics : good
Story : Correct
Gameplay : good
Interest : boring :( too much back and forth without self exploration, always 1 possible path. (yeah, I thought it was a metroidvania-like game, so I'm comparing it too much and get deceived).

It's still a good game (as I've completed it:P)

If the developer make another game, I guess they will evolve it in a more exploration feeling than linear game.
