Why don't you get a Windows tablet for the price of a N3DS XL to run Windows 8? Why do you need a 3DS to run Windows 95? Fun has its limitation. Let's play appropriate type of games on game console please.

If you think like that, you're certainly sitting in the wrong section of the forum. Care to define what exactly what "appropriate types of games" are?

Mean that game console is to play game not to run Windows just for the sake of fun. It's useless.

is cheaper to just get a system that can run Win 98... 95 is crap

besides, apart from the joy of running games, none of which were designed for handheld...a pointless endeavour

You're joking right? Do you know what a huge library of games those systems have? No one person will ever be able to beat all those games even if they play 4 hours per day for every day of their life, and yet some of the games have great replay value (can't count how many times I've played through Super Metroid and it's still so much fun!).

Besides, playing "the same emulators on every system" is always a new experience. For example SNES finally works well on a handheld now (3DS) that used to lag more or less depending on the game you play on older systems. Also the fact that I can play all those retro systems on my PS Vita now (only in the PSP emu for now but it's quite good) lets me finally enjoy the low latency, awesome colors and great blacks of an OLED screen which lets you enjoy the games the way they were intended (people used CRT TV's back then and they have the same awesome qualities I just listed about the OLED).

Also, I like to think 2D games were at their best during that era. After those systems most games were in 3D anyway and 3D games just don't necessary have the same awesome feel a real 2D platformer can provide. Sure, there are plenty of awesome indie games coming out now that look, feel and play like the games from the 16 bit era but then again if you give back catalogue of those old systems a shot you'll see that there are enough good games that new ones aren't necessarily needed.

I'm not ! I'm serious

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but let's agree to disagree. By that logic, you must be against development of most emulators because "they weren't designed for handhelds". No NES, SNES,Genesis, master system, Atari, etc for you..

I don't understand why the debate is so heated - of course you can port an x86 emulator to the 3DS and of course Windows 95 should work on it. It's not going to work very well, it'll probably be slow and it'll probably explode in your face the moment you open Notepad, but you can still do it.

Mouse control with analog and virtual keyboard on bottom screen along with the ability to map the physical buttons to custom keys = problem solved for most kinds of games.

On screen mapped touchscreen controls on a phone = problem solved (sarcasm intended, as I find playing old PC games like e.g. C&C, without an actual mouse and keyboard a joke)

Physical buttons and second screen for virtual keys > single screen with no buttons.

And how many DOS games are there that require you to continuously use over 8-10 keys?

Many? Right now I am thinking of the old Sierra games (Space Quest, King Quest, Larry, etc.) playing that without a KB is... argh...
Also, playing e.g. UT99 without a keyboard and mouse is like driving a kart with motion controls in Mario Kart, it just feels and controls awful and anyone using real controls will own you no problem.
That is the thing about PC games that doesn't port well to consoles, they actually use the keyboard.
The arcade-like and console-like games for PC will work well with 3DS controls, but that leaves out a lot of games.

Well, of course that the physical buttons wouldn't be enough for key and typing-intensive games like adventure games. But other than those, I don't know of many DOS games that couldn't be played with just 8-10 keys. Even with RPGs that have lots of actions with each one set to a different key, most actions are very situation-specific and are rarely used, so mapping the most used keys to buttons and using a virtual keyboard for the rest isn't that bothersome.

Eh, it's a fairly valid question, if you don't really understand the inner workings of emulation. As far as the other people here who are trying to dictate what sort of games should/shouldn't be played on the system, I'm not too sure if they're serious or attempting to troll. Poorly.

Well, from what I've heard from my parents, he had a seizure last night, perhaps an epileptic episode, fucking died, had a near death experience, my dad called the paramedics, they showed up, took him to the hospital, and he woke up covered in tubes, and started complaining.
