Hacking which games come bundled with update 4.5.0?

You can't use a rom to update if your current version is less than 4.x, as the gateway won't run. Updating from 2.2 needs a retail cart.

reece71079 posted that back in March, before 2.0 even came out. It was possible to update using a ROM with one of the older versions, 1.0 or 1.1a. Can't remember.

I was talking about system version 2.2, which doesn't let you use gateway at all, hence you can't update with a rom.

So someone said that one can update with a rom? So it's okay to not physically own the game and just download from somewhere.
For example, if I download Pokemon Mystery Dungeon which has 4.5 update and use Gateway to update it?
I was planning to update from 4.4 to 4.5. Going to buy Fast & Furious Showdown because it's the cheapest just for the update. Or maybe it's not necessary.
I'm sorry, I don't know how this goes because I thought that Gateway would spoof the firmware version.

Does this update method still work with retail games?

And I need to not update beyond 4.3 because I want to still be able to use my Acekard with it. Are there any downsides with not going all the way to 4.5?
