Cool, got a list of the homebrew games that actually run?

Just listing the games I've tried:

No problems
  • Elevated Speed
  • Hyper Fighting
  • Tron
  • VUEngine Platformer Demo
Minor problems
  • VUE Snake (music goes out of sync, but that might also happen on real hardware; the game itself sometimes crashes but that also happens on real hardware, not the emulator's fault)
Major problems
  • Formula V Public Demo (occasional crashes during gameplay)
If I didn't list it here it's not because it doesn't work, I just haven't tried it.

To expand upon that, I've tested just about every Virtual Boy Homebrew I could possibly dig up -- with the exception of automated Demo Reel & Dev Tool type apps that aren't actual games -- and Homebrew compatability is vastly expanded and improved with this update. Many of these either performed far worse, lacked sound, or didn't load at all in the last iteration. I halfheartedly attempted to color code this a little. Red indicates unplayable, and the closer to red in color something is, the closer to unplayable it is. You may notice some games in the "No Problems" category are highlighted in red. That is because, while Red Viper runs these roms perfectly well, the roms themselves are either unfinished or broken, and basically don't even qualify as a game. Inevitably, a couple tech demos and visual novel/slideshows ended up in there. This was all tested on a N3DS:

No problems:
  • 3D Crosswords
  • Advanced Pasta Cooking Simulator
  • Ballface (Apparent backwards-engineered version of Faceball/Nikochan Battle)
  • BLOX (v1.0)
  • BLOX 2
  • Capitan Sevilla 3D Public Demo
  • Channel Sweeper
  • Chris's Casino
  • Craig the Cranberry
  • Daumen Kinosaurier (Animated Slideshow)
  • Death Chase
  • Elevated Speed
  • EtchASketch
  • FaceBall Remastered (Nikochan Battle Mod)
  • Fishbone
  • Flappy Cheep Cheep
  • FZero VB (Broken ROM)
  • Game Hero
  • GoSub
  • GoSub3D
  • Hamburgers En Route to Switzerland
  • Hunter [Tech Demo]
  • Hyper Fighting
  • Legend of Helga (Broken ROM)
  • Lights Out
  • Maiden [Tech Demo]
  • Insecticide
  • Mario Combat
  • Mario VB
  • Minigame Mayhem
  • Pong Invaders (Broken ROM)
  • Push Novel Silent Hill (Visual Novel)
  • Real Danger
  • Simon!
  • Snatcher (Demo)
  • Soviet Union 2010
  • Soviet Union 2011
  • Space Pinball (Galactic Pinball Mod)
  • SPONG
  • Star Fox [Tech Demo]
  • Star Wars [Tech Demo]
  • Super Bounce
  • The Red Castle
  • Tron
  • VB Doom (Broken ROM)
  • VB Racing
  • VUE Snake
  • VUEngine Platformer Demo
  • Yeti 3D [Tech Demo]
  • ZSpace Racers (Broken ROM)
Problems:
  • 3D BattleSnake (Titlescreen loads, but just hangs there indefinitely. I've come to learn that this is a 2-player-only, link cable-required game. So, the fact that it doesn't move past the title screen is likely no fault of Red Viper itself)
  • BLOX v1.1 (Final build of BLOX is playable, but sound promptly glitches out very badly into a long, ear-piercing screech. Game frequently hangs and stutters, making for a sluggish, grating, thoroughly unenjoyable experience)
  • Castle of Doom (Glitched out graphics in the opening, but game seemingly performs flawlessly otherwise)
  • Castle of Doom Redux (Seemingly glitched, misplaced HUD elements, and game apparently doesn't load anything past the second level, which eternally loops upon completion - no idea if this is the emulator or ROM itself)
  • Doki Doki Headache Club (Graphics appear glitched and off-center upon boot-up, which progressively gets worse and worse; unplayable)
  • Formula V Public Demo (Doesn't seem to be any collision detection with the walls on the track, frequent crashes; essentially unplayable)
  • Mario Kart Virtual Cup (Always ends in an Arm 11 Crash right before the start of the Time Trial race, which is the only type of race available)
  • Pacman (Blank Screen, simply doesn't load)
  • Platformer Demo (Not to be confused with VUEngine Platformer Demo, this is another rom credited to "Bluefish" on Planet Virtual Boy: Blank Screen, simply doesn't load)
  • Red Square (Blank Screen, simply doesn't load)
  • Snowball Wars (Blank Screen, simply doesn't load)
  • Super Fighter (Blank Screen, simply doesn't load)
  • Sonic [Tech Demo] (Sonic sprite is missing, but what little is there is playable)
  • Tic-Tac-Toe (Hangs on title screen indefinitely, link cable required)
  • Value [Tech Demo] (Half of the avatar sprite is missing, perfectly playable apart from that. Although there is very little to do here anyway. In the last version of Red Viper, the sprite was completely missing. So, maybe in a future revision the last remaining missing half will materialize, lol)
  • Virtual WarZone (Music gradually begins to skip during intro sequence, culminating in a DRC Error #2 crash when attempting to begin the game from the title screen selection)
???:
  • Virtual WarZone (A new Homebrew game by Team VUEngine, available for purchase through RetroOnyx. There is a ROM version, but it's $40.00... and, well, I just don't care to pay that kind of price for a game rom that the creators themselves explicitly state on their website wasn't designed for use with emulators in mind, and that may or may not work... with chances leaning more heavily into the 'not' category. Looks pretty cool, though. If someone finds out for sure, do let us know. I will update here if I learn anything. Trying to dig up the free Demo version apparently available through Patreon.) Mystery solved and case closed. Big thanks and special shout out to Vague Rant for tracking it down.

Really, the only heartbreaking game that fell into the "Problems" list as far as I'm concerned is Red Square. This game actually looks really interesting, and like, well... a game. Much of the Virtual Boy homebrew just serves as incomplete proof-of-concepts... or are just quick, kind of shoddy little things someone just hastily cobbled and slapped together. As far as quality and fun-factor, Hyper Fighting unquestionably takes the crown as far as any of the VB homebrew I've played. Elevated Speed, Fishbone, Capitan Sevilla 3D, and VUE Engine Platformer follows behind it in the A-tier. Formula V would probably belong in that tier as well, if it worked. Snatcher, Mario Combat, and the two alternative mods of existing VB titles would be B-tier. And then you have all the rest, which I don't particularly care to map out right now, but they range from C-tier to straight Shit-tier. Props on the apparent reference to "The Room" with Flappy Cheep Cheep, though.

That's cool. Any homebrew that now works fine?
Red Square, the platformer demo, and Bad Apple were all blocked by the same issue, so other games that didn't boot may be freed by this update as well. I also fixed the crash in Mario Kart and the collision detection in Formula V, though Formula V still has a DRC error #2 every now and then.
That's what I've tested, I haven't gone through the whole set.

I hate ordering stuff online if I can go buy it somewhere close to me, and everywhere anymore will give you a discount only if you order it online, bs. Should be a discount if I go pick it up, not order online.

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Mostly for big purchases, I want it in my hands before I pay. Like a tv, I trust picking it up myself, before I'd trust it being sent thru mail/delivery. (Broken screen, etc) But yea if I can order online, then pickup at store is ok, but not all places offer that.

Thing is, if you break it driving back to your house, it's your fault. But if the delivery driver damages it, it's not your fault.
