So does this discussion mean that USB 3.0 drives are working okay for people now, as long as they're partitioned MBR/formatted FAT32?

Because I've got an old USB 2.0 enclosure that frequently won't mount and makes me do the disconnect/reconnect/power-cycle dance, and I'm thinking of replacing it, but it's getting harder and harder to find a USB 2.0 drive anymore. (USB 2.0 enclosures, on the other hand, are easy enough to find, but I don't know which ones are reliable with a Wii.)

I started with USB 2 drives but have been using USB 3 drives for years now. I used ModMii to set up over a dozen Wii's with them. All of mine have been Western Digital External MyBooks, it's just what I standardized on way back when, and am up to 87TB's across 15 drives or so holding files/games/movies/tv shows/useless information. I've used USB 3.0 3TB, 4TB & 8TB WD MyBook drives over the years without any issues. Well, it did take a bit more to get the 8TB's formatted correctly due to the MBR issue, and MBR might not even be needed these days. But the 4TB's always worked right out of the box after being FAT32 formatted and merging any hidden partitions.

Thanks!

I don't need anything that big; I believe my current drive is 150gb, so even a 1tb drive would be a massive improvement.

Has anybody had good luck with portable drives (WD Elements or Passport, Seagate Expansion, etc.)?

I have a 1TB drive and the only way I could cram more Wii/WW/VC/GC games on it is if I started installing complete junk like Ninjabread Man and Charlie's Angels. ;)

I was using a Seagate 320Gb that used to have to be unplugged and plugged back in every thim I started.

I switched to a 1Tb model about 3 months ago, and it's worked perfectly. My apologies, I don't remember the exact model but it is a USB3 version (the previous was USB1).

I set up a friend's Wii with a WD Elements 1Tb - no issues there, and it's been getting a fair bit of use over the past 3 months (6 kids in that house).

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm trying to avoid by getting a new drive.

Sounds like I'll go with WD Elements, then; thanks!

I mostly buy WD anyway (for platter drives; I usually buy Samsung for SSDs), though I hear Seagate has gotten its act together and is putting out a good product now.

Thanks again to everyone who helped!

You don't need Hermes for Animal Crossing. It works fine on d2x based on IOS 56 unless you want to use a USB keyboard then you need d2x based on IOS 38.

Your IOS 248-250 are odd. I would use d2x v8 as 249[56] and 250[57] and don't bother with 248 unless you want to put IOS 38 there for extra compatibility.

Then why wont it load?

With the configuration in your syscheck try using IOS 248 to load it. That's an older version of d2x but it's IOS 56 so it may work, but v8 has a lot higher compatibility. The reason I suggested adding d2x as IOS 38 is because that's the version the game was built with. :)
