I found the .mpo file format specification here (pdf), it could be useful for developers to make GUI friendly converters, preview programs, etc..

Yeah, you are correct, it's used, but not for 3D max.

BTW, N3D isn't used, but I would suggest

I tried opening this file in MPO Toolbox, and it crashes. Either MPO Toolbox is lousily implemented or Nintendo is not producing fully standards-compliant MPO files...

And here I was, expecting the file extension for the 3DS rom files.

This is not the same .mpo file specification I found in the .pdf I posted earlier.

The 3DS format is :
copy /b image1.jpg + image2.jpg image.mpo

it's a simple binary copy of 2 jpeg image.

The first bytes in the image exif header are different :
first picture : ÿØÿáDExif (FFD8 FFE1 1344)
second picture : ÿØÿáPExif (FFD8 FFE1 1450)

The exif data also include "Nintendo 3ds", and the date and time of the shot (both picture obviously have the same one).


I don't have a good enough computer at my workplace to extract the content correctly, I'll do it at home

I could only extract the second picture but not the first one (but the first one is included as a jpg in the zip)
A simple program can be made to extract and join 2 pictures.

I have another program that opened it perfectly...
it also has many different modes to view...

Actually Nintendo did a good job here using an existing standard and not inventing anything proprietary.

The .MPO file format is currently used by Fuji 3D cameras, but the good news is that there is a free tool allowing conversion between .MPO and other formats. See MPO Toolbox. You can easily e.g. extract two JPEGs (each for one eye), create a red-and-cyan version to be used with super-old 3D glasses made of paper, or take a 3D photo shot with another device and convert it into a 3DS-friendly version.

Hopefully the 3D porn will come soon to 3DS !
