you do not need to plug anything in i assure you. the ir port is covered by the slide pad ir port... they just touch each other... no plug so to speak. they should automatically talk to each other. no software neccessary

also it means 3rd party peripherals could be any shape and size and can communicate with the 3ds without clogging its wifi for connection. 3ds does not have bluetooth so this is the solution. it is very amazing really. guitar hero is possible now. no need for a gba slot!
see my point?

Can this be used for h4X0ring purposes?

Is there a handshake protocol? Do the console and the peripheral exchange keys? Can this be... abused?

I doubt that it 'just works' the software itself will have to do the communication. The slid controller will very likely be of no use what so ever outside of the games it's intended for.

I would say quite unlikely. As this butts up against the IR port with little light getting into it I would say the amount of error correction and therefore exploitable code is absolutely minimal.

The add-on's ir simply sends commands (buttons pressed, slide pad position) and 3ds's one recieves them if the software enables and uses the IR port. No keys or handshakes so the answer is No and No. (unless they make a stupid glitch that'll overflow and all that needed haxxy stuff when the game recieves a command it normally shouldn't for example out of range slidepad position, but that's doubtful)

Guitar Hero FTW!

I hope, if they decide to make one for the 3DS, that the Guitar Grip they make looks like an actual, if tiny, guitar, with the buttons along the neck of the guitar. The grip will also be a cradle, kinda like the slide pad extension. also, the cradle should jack right into the headphone port and should include louder speakers for maximum impact. i wonder why the DS guitar grip didn't have this...

OR... they just make it into two parts. one part is the Guitar Grip/controller, and the 2nd part clips at the back and communicates via IR. the 2nd part talks to the controller wirelessly, probably bluetooth. but then you won't have to actually hold the 3DS anymore... gahaha.

crazy ideas. but Guitar Hero better happen!

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't there be some latency issues?
Let's say the analog slider has a resolution of 1024 states per each axis (I pulled that number out of my ass but it's a nice large round number so I'll go with it), that's 10 bits per axis, and if the shoulder keys are binary (1 bit per button), plus a parity bit, that's 24 bit, add an 40 bit control string to get a nice round 64 bit sequence that's constantly repeating. That's a 64 bit packet. A 1 kbps connection would give you 16 samples per second. Standard IrDA ports have a lowest speed of 2.4 kbps, that's 38 samples per second, minus maybe a few due to errors. They could go to a higher bandwidth and get even more. There shouldn't be any lag or latency issues.

Don't you think they tested the latency in product testing? I mean there's a lot on the line with this peripheral.

Look at this. It's so close to a ideal design.

My concern with this is that if it doesn't plug into the 3DS and communicates with IR, then this extension going to need batteries. Also this second analog is only going to be used by 1-2 games because it requires special hardware...

Just because a game features hardware, it doesn't mean it requires it. For example, lots of Wii games are supporting classic controller (pro), gamecube, and WM+, but most, if not all of them can be played with just a Wiimote and (maybe) nunchuck OR they come out with a combo pack for any game that requires an accessory.

Yea, but have you tried playing guitar hero without the guitar? Some games are built for specific controls, and although they may support other control schemes, they are often very lacking. Also the comment I made about it only being used for 1-2 games, was because I think it should be used for more games, but most likely won't be because not everyone will have that controller, and game developers try to hit the biggest market.

It's certainly more than just 1 or 2 games - Monster Hunter Tri, Metal Gear, Kingdom Hearts, Resident Evil: Revelations, Ace Combat: Cross Rumble, and Dynasty Warriors VS have all been confirmed to be compatible with the device. It'll likely be implemented into a lot of newer titles, while those who don't want to slider pad left using the touch screen. All of the previously mentioned titles, with the exception of DW, has been confirmed to be playable without the slider pad. (And DW will likely not require it either, as SW3 didn't.)

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

It inserts a newline in a random spot.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
