Citra 3DS emulator is also shutting down development, GitHub repo taken down

emu.png

Quietly following on the heels of the injunction ruling against Yuzu emulator that resulted in its removal and ceased development, popular Nintendo 3DS emulator Citra is following suit. Yuzu's parent company, Tropic Haze LLC, is also the owner of the development team for Citra 3DS emulator, and because of the recent ruling, Citra has also met the same fate. As of current writing, Citra has been removed from download on its official website, and the Citra GitHub repository has been taken down as well.

An official statement from Bunnei, a representative for both Citra and Yuzu, was posted on the Discord channel for Yuzu, saying that they never intended to allow piracy to impact Nintendo, and that playing games on "unauthorized hardware" is harmful, so development on both emulators will cease as of today. Citra's Discord server has also locked itself down, following the announcement.

Give it a few weeks and new citra with a different name will appear. the source code was forked and backed up and citra wasnt a target of the lawsuit, it was collateral.

I really wish they didn’t cave to Nintendo. I hope more people pick up piracy because fuck the Big N
the problem is, “not caving” require a lot of money and a massive balls of steel. If there’s even a slight chance that I would go in jail for 10 years like the SXOS dev then I would bail too.

not to mention if these yuzu/citra’s dev already have a wife and kids

I have never seen a game company try so hard to bite itself in the butt. People don’t buy Nintendo consoles for the same reasons they buy bleeding edge consoles. Nintendo runs on the nostalgia of the history of their first party titles. Fighting to stop piracy is one thing (a thing they’ll never accomplish anyway), but trying as hard as they can to fight emulation of any kind just seems so asinine. Their war on video game preservation can’t be good for their longevity as a company that wants to remain relevant.

Didn't they already get mostly every game working fully for Citra? I think I had to use a special build to beat Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon but most games worked IIRC.

That's not how civil cases work. If you don't appear they'll just rule in favor of the party that did appear most times.

I had some medical debt that I didn't pay in Virginia after I moved back to Texas and they sued me for it. I didn't appear and it ended up as a judgment on my credit. No warrant for my arrest or anything.
Okay could be wrong on that end there is still other things that could probably be worse for them if they didn't take this route.

This was wishful thinking.

Yep, I had a quarter million lawsuit against me due to owning a car that someone else wrecked. Same exact thing happened. I filed bankruptcy and cleared it. I never showed up to court or responded to the suit.

Seems like a hollow victory. 3ds scene has been dead for years. Flashcarts are $5 on the usual places, luma3ds is open source, don't even have to open the 3ds to mod it, I could go on.

Here's how to not get frigged by Nintendo when developing an emulator:

Keep your mouth shut, don't accept donations, recruit close friends who won't snitch only, and finally, upload anonymously.

But I can understand a need for clout and money for your hard work.
Yeah I think the big thing to learn here is this is not how to run an emulator. Truthfully the Yuzu team I don't particularly feel bad for as they did screw up. But this is more of a hit to the community that we didn't deserve. Well at least the ones using things more legally...

I'm honestly surprised it took the belligerent red N so long to do something like this, especially when people were flying so close to the sun with switch emulation. Still a dick move though.

Also, if i was in charge of any other switch emulators, id be sweating bullets rn. Hopefully the dragon is satisfied with its kill.

I just realized that Dynarmic, the ARM core emulator, was also taken down due to all what's happening with Citra and Yuzu.

This was a completely legal piece of emulation software that was also used by other people, like TouchHLE, a compatibility layer for running some early iOS games for Android.

So this situation not only impacts Switch and 3DS emulation but other unrelated projects, which is really great. So for the Nintendo ninjas that may be reading this, I will make sure from now on to buy your products only second-hand at least 99% of the time.

Does anyone know if Dynarmic's dev was in the Yuzu team or something? It seems so weird that it was taken down.

I'd take the under on people finding a major exploit for Switch 2 within a year of release. Nintendo are incompetent and Nvidia have no reason to put much effort in to anything other than AI these days.

The only good thing that can came from all of these bullshit is that someone or some team will pick up where the this ended. To be honest it felt pretty bad, two in one swift strike. Damn.

Consumer and emu distributors: Okay, we bought the games and the hardware. We supplied the copyrighted code straight from the console, none included in the emulators. Now, we can play Nintendo games on our PCs!
Nintendo: YOU PIRATES! WE WILL SUE YOUR BUTTS!

Good grief, talk about melodrama... Satan exists, and he owns Nintendo.
